SALEM, Ore. — Top-ranked Santiam Christian went on an 11-0 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to wipe out a Rainier lead, and went on to defeat the foul-plagued Columbians 48-33 in the semifinals of the Oregon 3A state girls basketball tournament at Willamette University on Friday night.
Rainier (23-6), which won the state crown last season with a 29-0 record, takes on Lewis and Clark League rival Warrenton at 1:30 p.m. today for third and fifth place. It will be the fourth meeting of the year between the Columbians and Warriors, with Warrenton owning a 2-1 edge.
The game swung the Eagles’ way with two minutes left in the third quarter after Mollee Schwegler stole the ball and converted a layup to give the Columbians a 24-23 lead. But Santiam Christian (26-1) took control from there, thanks to five consecutive foul calls on the Columbians and six straight missed shots.
Rainier coach Doug Knox wasn’t happy with how the game was officiated after his team took the lead, but quickly added, “I’m not blaming that for the loss, but it sure didn’t help.”
Rachel Kubler made two free throws to give Santiam Christian a 34-24 lead with 7:42 left in the game to cap the 11-0 run, with seven of the 11 coming at the free-throw line.
Rainier never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
The Eagles were whistled for 13 fouls and made 19-of-23 free throws. Rainier was called for 22 fouls and made 8-of-17 at the line.
“Santiam has seven girls between 5-foot-6 and 5-9, and they run well,” Knox said. “We played them tough. We held their top player, Tayla Woods, to five points in the first half, but she made 12-of-14 free throws in the game, which hurt us.”
Woods led the Eagles with 20 points. Schwegler led all scorers with 21 for the Columbians, but only three other players scored in the game.
