Prep Roundup: Kalama boys survive loser-out game

KALAMA — By surviving a do-or-die district pigtail game against Forks here Monday, Kalama earned the right to take on second-ranked Winlock in the opening round of the Southwest 1A District tournament. “That’s our prize,” joked Chinooks coach Jody Stemkoski.

Kalama (13-7) will take on the Cardinals (18-2) at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Castle Rock.

On Monday, the Chinooks overcame a sluggish start to beat Forks 48-35. Brandon Walker had 15 points and six rebounds, Matt Pollock 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Robby Sanders 11 points.

Kalama led just 13-11 at halftime before improving its ball movement in the second half.

“We’ve been playing real tense lately,” Stemkoski said. “We loosened up in the second half.

The Chinooks played Winlock twice in one week this season, losing 61-30 at Winlock and 59-45 at home.

Tigers trim Catlin Gabel

CLATSKANIE — Clatskanie took control in the third quarter of a Lewis and Clark 3A League playoff game here Monday and pulled away to beat Catlin Gabel 70-58.

The Tigers will host Warrenton at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

K.C. Taylor (eight rebounds) had 17 points, and Trevor Marioni, Cody Sloderbeck (five assists) and Danny Somes (four steals) added 12 points apiece to pace Clatskanie against the Eagles.

Ethan Andrews added nine points and eight rebounds, Chris Wood came off the bench to score six points, swipe four steals and dish four assists, and Mitch Ryan had four steals.

The Tigers led for most of the game but saw their lead dip to four points in the third quarter.

“Then we turned the switch on, forced some turnovers and took control,” Clatskanie coach Keith Sloderbeck said.

Toledo drops season finale

ONALASKA — Toledo dug itself a hole in the first quarter, and the Indians were able to climb out as Onalaska cruised to a 54-42 victory in the SWW 1A League Evergreen Division boys basketball regular-season finale for both teams on Friday.

“They had a big third quarter which didn’t help us,” Toledo coach Scott Merzoian said. “We tried to put the pressure on and were able to cut their lead to 10 in the fourth quarter, but we struggled to make shots.”

David Wallace scored 15 points for Toledo, which finished its season 6-14, 5-9 in league.

Mules march into quarters

CENTRALIA — Wahkiakum opened the Southwest 2B District girls basketball tournament ready to play defense.

The Mules shut out South Bend in the first quarter and followed the brilliant lead of Shelby Deaton to a 61-40 victory here Monday in first round action.

Wahkiakum (12-9) will take on Napavine in a district quarterfinal game at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Rochester.

Deaton had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five steals against the Indians. Brieanna Olsen added 14 points off the bench, Jordyn Wirkkala had 10 points, Evelyn Clark swiped seven steals, and Shelby Felton had seven points, five rebounds and five assists.

Wahkiakum outscored South Bend 12-0 in the first quarter.

Ducks rally past Naselle

CENTRALIA — Christian Carlson kept Toutle Lake in the game by scoring 11 of her 19 points in the first half, and the Ducks rallied to outscore Naselle 25-9 in the final two quarters en route to a 39-29 victory in the opening round of the Southwest 2B District girls basketball tournament on Monday.

“Christian was all we had in the first half. She had 11 of our 14 points,” said TL coach Larry Hoff. “In the first half, we showed our youth. We were frantic and couldn’t get anything going. We made poor decisions with the ball, The second half was better, especially defensively.”

Maddie Timm, who led the Ducks with six rebounds, also hit some “big buckets” in the second half, Hoff said.

Toutle Lake (12-9) takes on Raymond at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Montesano High School.

Tigers ousted from playoffs

CLATSKANIE — Maria Nolan scored 14 points to lead Clatskanie, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell to Oregon Episcopal 50-41 in a Lewis and Clark 3A League girls basketball playoff game Monday.

The loss ended Clatskanie’s season.

OES led 15-3 after the first quarter. The Tigers managed to trim the deficit to three points entering the final period, but OES put the game away with a 17-11 run.

“We just couldn’t get it going. We got good shots and good looks at the basket, but we couldn’t get it to fall,” Clatskanie coach Scott Taylor said. “We had a good season.”

MM sinks in fourth quarter

WASHOUGAL — Alicia McElroy scored 18 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter to spark a huge Washougal comeback as the Panthers edged Mark Morris 44-41 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League girls basketball game Monday.

The Monarchs (8-10, 3-6 league) led 34-21 entering the final period when they “started turning the ball over and fouling,” MM coach Scott Ruhland said.

McElroy scored 11 of her 18 in the fourth from the free-throw line.

“We had 20 turnovers in the game and probably 10 of them came in the fourth quarter,” Ruhland said.

Washougal took the lead in the last 45 seconds and withstood MM’s final few possessions.

Taybra Teeters had a double-double for MM with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Nicole Duscha pulled down 12 boards. Angie Kent (eight points) played well off the bench.

Hockinson jolts Lumberjills

HOCKINSON — R.A. Long had no offensive rhythm and fell 48-30 to fifth-ranked Hockinson here Monday in a Greater St. Helens 2A League girls basketball game.

“We just stopped moving the ball some time in the third quarter,” RAL coach J.D. Ott said. “We played hard defensively, but we just had no rhythm on offense.”

Katie Gudgell had nine points, Kelsey Craft seven points and eight rebounds and Sadie Petersen six points for the Jills (8-11, 4-5 in league).

Ott praised the defense of Hannah Johnson and Tirzah Coalman.

Kelso sends four to state

TUMWATER — Kelso’s Kurtis Giberson won the 125-pound weight class as the Hilanders grabbed fifth place in the Class 4A Regional Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

No team scores were reported.

Giberson topped Skyview’s Preston Hu by a 16-5 major decision in the finals. Austin Smart (130) and Niko Hughes (140) each finished second in their respective weight classes, and Riley Miller (112) was third.

The Hilanders will compete in Mat Classic XXI in the Tacoma Dome on Friday and Saturday.
