RIDGEFIELD — R.A. Long trailed by two touchdowns early in the first half of their GSHL 2A football matchup at Ridgefield on Friday. But the Lumberjacks weren’t ready to roll over.

RAL used a strong second-half surge, culminated by a 27-yard field goal by Kaleb Carr with 15 seconds remaining to complete a 32-29 victory over the Spudders.

The victory kept the Lumberjacks (7-1, 4-0 league) tied atop the GSHL 2A with Mark Morris. The teams face off for the league crown next Friday at Longview Memorial Stadium.

“I’m happy that we found a way to win,” RAL coach Erik Bertram said. “We didn’t play a really good game, but we’re of the mindset that any win is a good one.”

RAL trailed 14-0 late in the first quarter when Gavin Johnson hauled in a 39-yard scoring strike from William Yordy. Ridgefield countered with another touchdown early in the second quarter, but the Jacks got a 1-yard scoring dive from Jordan Kilgore to trail 21-14 at the break.

“The guys really had to rally after trailing 21-7, and they stepped up and did a very good job,” Bertram said. “They (the Spudders) played us tough, but we got it done.”

Yordy, who completed 11-of-23 passes for 301 yards, hooked up with Dylan Hopkins on a 68-yard scoring strike in the third quarter as the Jacks took a 22-21 lead. Kilgore added a 5-yard scoring scamper in the fourth prior to Carr’s winning field goal.

Johnson caught three passes for 102 yards, Nusbaum added four catches for 85 and Hopkins had two for 75. Kilgore also carried the ball 22 times for 93 yards.

Bertram praised the defensive play of Tyler Weaver, Evan Earnest and Julio Bautista, who recovered a fumble.

Beavers hold on to claim shutout over Washougal

WASHOUGAL — Woodland survived numerous trips inside the Washougal 30-yard line without scoring as the Beavers held on for a 6-0 victory over the Panthers in GSHL 2A football on Friday.

The victory pushed Woodland to 6-2, 2-2 in league.

“It was a comedy of errors for us on offense, but a win is win and we’ll take an ugly win over a loss any time,” Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf said. “We had the ball inside their 30 three times and came away with nothing because of penalties, dropped balls and interceptions.”

Shane Brady hauled in a 23-yard scoring pass from Trevor Hurn in the first quarter for the game’s lone touchdown. Hurn completed 15-of-34 passes for 173 yards and three interceptions, including five passes for 95 yards to Brady.

“It was a great defensive battle by our team,” Greenleaf said. “We had a goal-line stand in the third quarter, and we held them to four-and-out on our 30 with four minutes left. We came back and had to get a first down with 90 seconds left near midfield to seal the game.”

Greenleaf praised the running of Austin Ripp and David Lubinski, and the defense of Elijah Denis and Willy Davis.

Tribe wins Battle of Cowlitz with balanced run attack

TOLEDO — David Wallace rushed for two touchdowns and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for another as Toledo crushed Winlock 44-6 in the 85th Battle of the Cowlitz football game Friday night.

“We came out ready to play,” said Toledo coach Perry Herbst, whose Indians (6-2, 4-2 league) can clinch the SWW 1A Evergreen Division’s No. 3 playoff berth by beating Rochester next week. “We were very balanced on the ground and everyone played hard.”

D.J. Herbert returned the opening kickoff 74 yards for the Indians and later added a 1-yard TD run to make it 14-0 after a quarter.

Comets shake off Hyaks, roll to 59-14 home victory

NASELLE — Tenth-ranked Naselle exchanged touchdowns with North Beach in the first quarter, but broke away with a big second quarter and put the Hyaks away late in a 59-14 victory in Pacific 2B League football Friday night.

“We had our trouble. It took us a while to get going, and they (the Hyaks) were right there with us,” Naselle coach Jeff Eaton said. “They scored their second touchdown of the game in the third quarter to make it 33-14, then tried an onside kick. We recovered it and controlled things after that.”

Alan Erickson (6 and 11 yards) and Logan Scrabeck (10 and 15 yards) each scored a pair of TDs in the first half to make it 27-6 at the break. Jesus Martinez returned the second-half kickoff 76 yards for a score for a 33-6 advantage, and the Hyaks came back with a touchdown and two-point conversion.

Fishermen give Bruins a battle before falling 42-21

ILWACO — Winless Ilwaco gave White Salmon everything it could handle before dropping a 42-21 decision to the Bruins in an SWW 1A Trico Division football game Friday night.

The Fishermen took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Trevor Couch’s 26-yard touchdown run and Christian DeKeyser’s kick, but White Salmon went 76 yards in two plays on its first possession to tie it.

It stayed that way until the Bruins scored with 1:01 left in the half for a 14-7 lead at intermission.

“We battled pretty well,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty said. “We moved the ball and caused them some stress, but we obviously still have improvements to make.”

Ilwaco trailed 28-21 entering the fourth quarter after getting two TD runs by quarterback Justin Short (14 yards, 1 yard). But White Salmon controlled the final period and put the Fishermen away.

Ilwaco had 226 yards on the ground and 81 more through the air.

Schneider seals Mules’ win with TD run in third quarter

CATHLAMET — Zack Schneider’s 3-yard scoring scamper in the third quarter sealed the deal for Wahkiakum as the Mules turned away Morton/White Pass 21-6 in Central 2B football on Friday.

The victory moved Wahkiakum to 5-3, 4-1 in league.

“We had a lot of penalties and fumbles, but it was a good nonleague win,” Wahkiakum coach Eric Hansen said. “We had several missed chances in the Red Zone, and we have to do a better job with that.”

The Mules took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter when Brandon Fudge completed a 14-yard scoring toss to Zach Pierce, and Tyson Bain scooped up a fumble and rumbled 31 yard to paydirt.

Win at Stevenson keeps Kalama in the playoff hunt

STEVENSON — Sophomore Ethan Oomittuk and his Kalama Chinooks kept their playoff hopes alive with a gritty 21-15 victory over Stevenson here Friday in a SWW 1A Trico Division football game.

The victory immediately turned Kalama into the biggest Stevenson fans outside the Gorge, because the Chinooks (4-4, 2-2 league) need Stevenson to beat White Salmon next Thursday to create a three-way tie for third in the Trico.

The top three teams in the Trico advance to the playoffs, and even if Kalama beats league champion La Center next Thursday, a White Salmon victory would eliminate the Chinooks.

Kalama has made the playoffs in 11 consecutive seasons.

The ‘Nooks got it done Friday without the services of two-way senior standout Sean McVicker, who was not with the team due to a family emergency, as well as three other players who are off the team for disciplinary reasons. Oomittuk’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Zack Wilde on a fourth-and-6 play with five minutes left in the game was “a big touchdown,” Buchanan said.

That made it 21-7, Kalama.

Alex Hausserman’s 87-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave Kalama an early lead, and Oomittuk scored on a 1-yard dive on the opening drive of the second half.

Standings/Schedule:  Kalama   Stevenson
