Shoup shuts out the Panthers
WASHOUGAL — Nathan Shoup allowed two hits and struck out three batters as Woodland pounded Washougal 10-0 in a five-inning Greater St. Helens 2A League baseball game on Wednesday.
Woodland (6-3, 3-1 league), which had 10 hits and no errors, scored four of its runs in the fourth inning.
"Our defense stepped up, our pitcher threw well and we hit the ball," Woodland coach Josiah Wilfong said. "This is probably our best overall game of the year."
Brandon Smith had four hits including two doubles and four RBIs, with Trevor Hurn and Mike Hartley adding two hits apiece. Sam Nigro chipped in a hit and three RBIs.
Woodland hosts Mark Morris on Friday.
Heritage upends the Hilanders
VANCOUVER — A dropped fly ball in the seventh inning led to the game-winning run as Heritage slipped past Kelso 5-4 in Greater St. Helens 4A League baseball on Wednesday.
"We really didn’t do a lot to help ourselves during the game," Kelso coach Scot Meeker said. "When we had baserunners we couldn’t get the hits to move them around. We also didn’t battle well when we had two strikes."
After the seventh inning dropped fly ball put the lead runner at second base, relief pitcher Garrett Crayne walked the next hitter to set up a force play. Kelso’s strategy backfired when the next hitter looped a bleeder over the infield to plate the game-winning run.
David Hull scattered eight hits, allowed four runs and struck out two through five innings before yielding to Crayne.
"David started out slow, but he settled in and did a real nice job," Meeker added.
Cody O’Neill had two of Kelso’s six hits. Makaio Mobbs added a double and two RBIs, and Crayne knocked in two runs on an error that tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning.
Kelso (5-1, 2-1 league) hosts Skyview on Friday.

The Lassies banged out 17 hits and secured a no-hitter via the 10-run mercy rule when Karina Pavlov worked a hitless fifth inning, striking out two.
Nyman had eight strikeouts in her four-inning stint.

Jills squeak by Hockinson
R.A. Long won more games than Hockinson (57-56) as the Lumberjills remained undefeated following a Greater St. Helens 2A League tennis match at home on Wednesday.
"We won all of the doubles matches and Hockinson won the singles, so we had to count the number of sets each team won," RAL coach Helen Donovan said. "It turned out each team had won seven sets, so the tiebreaker was determined by which team won the most games. It’s apparent that every little bit helps."
Doubles winners for RAL (5-0, 4-0 league) were Lyndsey Norris-Collette and Hannah Johnson (6-0, 6-1), Jordyn Ashford and Katie Gudgell (7-5, 6-1) and Nicole Jones and Cambri Shanahan (6-2, 3-6, 6-1).
