Three former prep and collegiate standouts, and a football team that reached the threshold of a state title are the latest inductees into the Mark Morris High School Hall of Fame.
Allan Peterson, Laura Wright, Dr. Richard Kirkpatrick and the 1979 football team will be honored Sept. 25 during halftime of the Mark Morris vs. Franklin of Seattle football game at Longview Memorial Stadium.
In addition, each of the inductees will be honored at a presentation in the Monticello Middle School cafeteria adjacent to the stadium after the game. Game time is 6 p.m., and community members are invited to attend the free ceremony.
Here’s a glance at each of the inductees:
n Allan Peterson (Class of 1980): Featured in the 2006 book “101 Sports Heroes: Outstanding Sports Figures from the Lower Columbia Region” published by The Daily News, Peterson was a three-year letterman in football and baseball, and lettered in basketball as a senior.
As a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, Peterson earned all-state honors in football as a running back, but he was also effective as a kicker, punter and returner of kicks and punts.
Peterson was instrumental in the success of the 1979 MM football team that finished second in the Class AA state playoffs. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards during the regular season and added another 1,000 yards in four playoff games.
In a 40-29 victory over Olympia in the state quarterfinals on Nov. 16, 1979 at Longview Memorial Stadium, Peterson carried the ball 32 times for 318 yards and four touchdowns in the mud. He also completed a 32-yard pass for a key first down, caught one pass for 12 yards, intercepted a pass, blocked an extra-point kick and threw a key block for MM’s first touchdown.
He was equally successful in baseball, earning two team MVP awards while garnering first-team all-state honors. After high school, Peterson played baseball for two seasons at Lower Columbia College before transferring to Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho.
While at L-C State, he led the Warriors to a second-place finish in the NAIA National Baseball Championships as a junior, and to the title as a senior while earning back-to-back All-American honors.
Peterson was drafted by the California Angels in the 18th round of the 1984 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, and played minor league baseball for several seasons.
n Laura Wright (Class of 2003): Wright lettered in volleyball and basketball during her prep career, and went on to write her name in the basketball record book at Central Washington University.
In volleyball, Wright led the Monarchs to third-, fourth- and seventh-place finishes at state, and is the school’s all-time leader in stuff blocks. She finished second in kill percentage and third in total kills.
In basketball, Wright led two teams to the state tournament, and is MM’s second all-time career scorer. She also holds single-game, single-season and career records in rebounds and blocked shots.
Wright earned all-state honors as a junior, and was the first player in 10 years to lead the Greater St. Helens League in scoring and rebounding in consecutive seasons. At the conclusion of her senior campaign at MM, Wright was nominated to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game.
Wright later played basketball at Central Washington University, where she finished as the school’s all-time leader in rebounds (816) and blocked shots (149). She is also ranked in the top-five all-time in 12 other team statistical categories, and in the top 15 in three others.
n Dr. Richard Kirkpatrick (Class of 1964): A letterman in tennis and basketball, Kirkpatrick participated in the state tennis tourney while also being active in student government, orchestra and band.
Kirkpatrick later attended the University of Washington where he served as Student Body President for the 1967-68 school year. He later returned to Longview and became the team doctor at Mark Morris, a position he has held since 1978.
Kirkpatrick has served as a member of many community and Longview School District projects. For more than 30 years, he has given of his time in organizing, supporting and participating in youth athletic and youth musical programs.
n 1979 MM football team: Coached by Del Talley, the 1979 Monarchs were the most successful football team in the Longview School District since the inception of the state playoff system in 1973.
The Monarchs finished the regular season with a 6-3 record, and beat sixth-ranked West Valley of Yakima in the opening round of the state playoffs. MM later beat Olympia 40-29 in a state quarterfinal game played at Longview Memorial Stadium, and toppled third-ranked Pullman 34-21 in 25-degree cold in the semifinals at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.
MM lost to Arlington 49-14 in the state championship at the Kingdome, but the Monarchs finished their season by scoring 108 points in their three postseason games.
Some of the team members included quarterback Sam Tilton, running backs Allan Peterson and Tony Uzeta, receivers Rodney Holland, Kevin Bogner and Ted Campbell, linemen Phil Walker and Rob Leggett, and defensive back Rob Poole.
