Mark Morris finally has an opponent for the Southwest 2A District football playoffs. River Ridge survived a five-team tiebreaker at South Sound Stadium in Lacey on Tuesday to secure the Evergreen 2A Conference’s No. 4 seed to the district playoffs.

River Ridge (2-7) takes on Mark Morris (8-1) at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Longview Memorial Stadium in a winner-to-state, loser-out district crossover game.

The Hawks’ last postseason appearance came in 2004 as a Class 3A team.

KEDO-1400 will air the MM-River Ridge game at approximately 4:45 p.m.

The 5-team playoff featured River Ridge, Elma, Aberdeen, Centralia and Hoquiam. Hoquiam was eliminated in the double-elimination, round robin portion of the tiebreaker. In single-elimination bracket play, Aberdeen beat Centralia and River Ridge beat Elma.

Then River Ridge beat Aberdeen to win the tiebreaker.

R.A. Long and Woodland both have playoff games on Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Lumberjacks (7-2) finished second in the GSHL 2A and will host Tumwater, the No. 3 team from the EvCo 2A at Longview Memorial Stadium. Tumwater (6-3) has reached the playoffs five years in a row, nine times in the past 11 years, and has won four state championships. The Thunderbirds are coached by Sid Otton, the all-time winningest high school football coach in the state.

R.A. Long is making only its fourth playoff appearance since 1980.

The game will air on KEDO-1400 at 6:40 p.m.

Woodland (6-3) finished third in league play and will travel to Tumwater to take on Black Hills, the EvCo 2A second-place team. Black Hills (7-2) is ranked seventh in the state among Class 2A teams and is led by the league’s top running back, senior Cody Peterson. Peterson is the reigning EvCo MVP. He rushed for 1,832 yards and scored 23 touchdowns to lead South Sound running backs in 2008 and has 1,662 yards and 20 TDs operating behind five returning starters on the offensive line this year.

The EvCo 2A is 10-2 against the GSHL 2A in crossover games since 2006, when the Southwest 2A District began using crossovers to determine which teams it would send to state.

Mark Morris has the GSHL 2A’s two victories, in ’08 and ’09.

Southwest 1A Districts

Castle Rock finished second in the SWW 1A Trico Division and Kalama third. Both earned berths to the district playoff round.

Toledo finished third in the Evergreen Division and visits Castle Rock at 7 p.m. on Friday, while Kalama will be on the road for a 7 p.m. showdown at Onalaska.

All district playoff games are winner-to-state.

Pacific and Central 2B Leagues

The 2Bs have one more week of regular season games. Naselle (8-1, 4-1 league) can wrap up second place in the Pacific with a victory at Ocosta on Thursday.

Wahkiakum (5-4, 4-2 league) hosts Mossyrock on Thursday in a game that will determine third place in the Central. Only the top three teams in each league advance to the playoffs.
