Red Lion settles for second
BELLEVUE — A two-out error in the fourth inning by Red Lion opened the floodgates to five runs for Chaffey Construction as it went on to post a 9-3 win over Red Lion in the championship game of the Brandy Pugh Memorial Senior American Legion baseball tournament.
Garett Crayne started on the mound for Red Lion and allowed eight runs (three earned) and five hits in 3 2/3 innings. Crayne trailed 3-1 with two outs and nobody on in the fourth when a dropped fly ball to right field was dropped, setting the stage for five Chaffey runs.
Carl Johnson pitched 2 1/3 innings of strong relief, giving up one run on three hits. Spencer Downs went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Robby Sanders hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
Red Lion was short-handed in the title game as David Hull went home on Saturday with a sore arm and shortstop Chris Pierce injured his ankle on Sunday sliding into second base.
Red Lion finished second in the Brandy Pugh for the second year in a row. All-tourney team selections included Downs, Pierce and Sanders.
Red Lion (31-11-1) will play in the subregionals at Newport High in Bellevue on Saturday. The four-team tourney will determine who earns a berth in the state tourney in Tacoma next week.
