The final week of the high school football regular season sorted itself out quite nicely in Southwest Washington.
There could have been three-team tiebreakers in the 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens Leagues, as well as the 1A Trico League.
But the way the games played out last Thursday and Friday made those tiebreakers unnecessary.
So the playoff teams are set. Skyview and Heritage in the 4A, Union, Camas and Columbia River in the 3A, Mark Morris, R.A. Long, Woodland and Hockinson in the 2A and La Center, Castle Rock and Kalama in the 1A.
Simple.
But travel a little to the northern portion of District 4 and there’s a mess brewing.
The top three teams from the 2A Evergreen Conference are set. But four teams make the playoffs from that league, and on Tuesday five teams — that’s right, FIVE teams — will hold a tiebreaker to sort out the final playoff spot.
After Friday’s games, Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Elma, Centralia and River Ridge tied at 2-5.
So on Tuesday at Lacey’s South Sound Stadium, those five teams will take part in a tiebreaker that is being described as the first of its kind in Western Washington.
“From a fan’s standpoint, this could be one of the all-time great events,” Elma athletic director Steve Bridge told the Aberdeen Daily World.
And of course, to be one of the all-time great events, it can’t be simple. Simple would be a single-elimination format that could be decided in four Kansas-Plan Tiebreakers (same format used in overtimes, in which teams start from the opponent’s 25-yard line).
No, this event on Tuesday will be double-elimination format that could go on all night.
In fact, to keep it from lasting until Wednesday, there will be two tiebreakers played at the same time on opposite sides of the field, kind of like a Saturday youth basketball league at the YMCA.
Coaches often tell their players to play until they hear the whistle. Well, on Tuesday, it’s “play until you hear the whistle … and make sure it’s NOT from the other side of the field.”
Craziness.
So if you want to see a truly unique event in prep sports, travel up to Lacey at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
