PASCO — Mark Morris junior Chase Bussing earned all-state honors with an 18th-place finish as the Monarchs grabbed sixth place in the Class 2A state cross country meet at the Sun Lakes Golf Course on Saturday.
Burlington-Edison tallied 57 points to win the boys’ team title, followed by Sehome with 85 and Squalicum 106. MM tallied 192, W.F. West was ninth with 260, Washougal placed 15th with 316 and Centralia was 16th with 370.
Sehome edged Kingston 57-59 to win the girls’ title. R.A. Long finished 13th with 349, Hockinson was 14th with 352, Washougal 15th with 370, and Black Hills 16th with 372.
Bussing completed the 5,000-meter course in 16:37, and teammate Andres Rodriguez was 46th in 17:04 as both finished in the top 50 to earn all-state honors.
Also competing for MM were David Klinginsmith (56th, 17:14), Blake Bussing (63rd, 17:17), Mavrick Knoles (67th, 17:21), Nate Starr (88th, 17:45) and Jeremiah Roffler (115th, 18:18).
Nathan Richards of R.A. Long placed 65th in 17:18. Richards improved his state time by a minute over last year.
Sehome’s Scott Carlyle won the boys’ race in 15:47, and Dakota Parker of W.F. West was second in 15:52.
RAL’s Dani Eggleston earned girls’ all-state honors with a 32nd-place finish in 20:16, followed by teammates Jessica Johanson (76th, 21:20), Allison Schneider (100th, 22:06), Rachael Washington (129th, 24:00), Leah Ahrens (132nd, 24:08), Caity Wilson (143rd, 27:01) and Angelique Harding (144th, 27:58).
“Our goal coming into state was to be first among the teams in our district, and we accomplished that,” RAL coach Nick Stumbo said. “Our times were solid. Hopefully we can make it back here again next year.”
MM’s Joanna Feeney was 63rd in 21:03 and Savina Rodriguez placed 102nd in 22:11.
Kingston runners Ruby Roberts and Marina Roberts grabbed the top two places in 18:06 and 18:38, respectively.
Nagunst, Kotkins in top 5
EUGENE — Rainier seniors Kayla Nagunst and Kaylee Kotkins closed out their prep cross country careers by finishing second and fifth, respectively, in the Oregon Class 3A state meet Saturday at Lane College.
In the boys’ meet, Clatskanie’s Adam Siltala placed ninth as the Tigers grabbed 13th place in the team standings.
Nagunst completed the race in 20:08, eight seconds behind individual champion Ashley Baldovino of Lakeview. Kotkins finished three seconds out of fourth place.
“Kayla and Kaylee ran very smart races,” Rainier coach Anne Warrington said. “This was a very good way to finish their high school careers.”
Nagunst and Kotkins also qualified to run in the Nike Border Clash, featuring the top runners in Washington and Oregon, on Nov. 22 on the Nike World Campus in Beaverton.
St. Mary’s, which placed three runners in the top 10, edged Catlin Gabel 73-74 to win the team title, with Bandon a distant third with 131.
Siltala completed the race in 17:09, followed by teammates Michael Siltala (67th, 18:52), Shawn Murry (77th, 19:10), Cody Sloderbeck (101st, 20:11), Danny Somes 107th, 20:19), Gary Points (110th, 20:26) and Bryce Horness (118th, 21:33).
Cole Watson of Rogue River won the race in 15:52, with Creswell’s Corbin Helt finishing second in 16:29.
Nyssa placed four runners in the top 20 to win the boys’ team title with 59 points, followed by Union with 109. Clatskanie tallied 262.
Ilwaco’s Ulbricht 6th in 1A
PASCO — Ilwaco’s Cameo Ulbricht closed out her prep cross country career with a sixth-place finish in the girls’ run, and Toledo’s Joshua Rose placed 11th in the boys’ race in the Class 1A state meet at the Sun Willows Golf Course on Saturday.
Ulbricht (20:04) and freshman teammate Cindy Pacheco (43rd, 21:48) claimed all-state honors after finishing in the top 50. Also for the Fishermen were Leticia Cervantes (58th, 22:17), Raven Rogers (99th, 23:31), Brittany King (135th, 28:46), Rissa Gerke (136th, 28:47) and Nicole Meyer (139th, 32:23).
Kalama freshman Kaitlyn Horn also earned all-state with a 35th-place finish in 21:34.
Northwest High of Seattle runners Maddie Meyers (18:01) and Eliza Rice (19:37) claimed the top two places, followed by La Center’s Meagan Governor in 19:46.
King’s outdistanced La Center 83-110 to win the girls’ team title, followed by Chelan with 122. Ilwaco placed 12th with 358 points and Onalaska was 14th with 294.
Rose (17:09) and teammate Ronnie Neumann (32nd, 17:43) earned all-state honors, and were followed by Mikhail Hopf (69th, 18:27), Willie Reynolds (87th, 18:45), Joe Durham (124th, 19:38), Chris Comstock (133rd, 20:04) and Gibb Freece (138th, 20:29).
Kalama’s Kody Shriver placed 60th in 18:13 and Jeremy Schoenberg was 72nd in 18:32, and Castle Rock’s Travis Patrick placed 75th in 18:33.
Patrick’s time was a personal best.
“Travis beat a couple of kids who had beaten him at district, so he was happy with that,” CR coach Jim Oliver said.
Port Townsend runners Bereket Piatt and Habtamu Rubio grabbed the top two places in 16:10 and 16:23, respectively.
Nooksack Valley won the boys’ team title with 99 points, followed by Port Townsend with 111. La Center placed seventh with 192, Toledo 12th with 249 and Onalaska 15th with 311.
Three earn all-state nods
PASCO — Naselle runners Cramer Smith and Nathan Reitz, and Wahkiakum’s Bradlee Pugh all earned all-state honors with top-50 finishes in the Class 2B/1B state cross country meet at the Sun Willows Golf Course on Saturday.
Smith finished the 5,000-meter race in 19th place in 17:56, and Reitz was 28th in 18:21. Pugh placed 24th in 18:18 and teammate Collan Riley was 52nd in 18:56.
Northwest Christian runners Lucas Graham (16:25) and Justin Holden (16:41) claimed the top two places while leading the Navigators to the boys’ team title with 83 points.
Morgan Willson of Colfax easily won the girls’ race in 18:36, followed by Mikel Elliott of White Pass in 19:23. Northwest Christian, which placed four runners in the top 10, won the team title with 28 points. White Pass was a distant second with 86.
Kelso’s Wood is 126th
PASCO — Kelso’s Kaiti Wood placed 126th in the girls’ 5,000-meter race at the Class 4A state cross country meet at the Sun Willows Golf Course on Saturday.
Wood completed the race in 21 minutes flat. Garfield’s Anna Dailey won in 17:58, with Minna Fields of Stanwood second in 18:17.
Eastlake tallied 100 points to win the girls’ team title, followed by Tahoma and Stanwood with 124 and 126, respectively.
In the boys’ race, Central Kitsap’s Shane Moskowitz broke the tape in 15:06, followed by Conner Peloquin of Gig Harbor in 15:22. Ferris won the boys’ team title with 68 points, with Henry Jackson placing second with 100.
SWIMMING
Kelso wins seven events
VANCOUVER — Kelso won seven of 11 events, and advanced three individuals and a pair of relays to state during competition in the GSHL 4A Championships on Saturday.
No team scores were reported.
The top two placers in each event advance to the Class 4A state meet on Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Kelso’s 200 medley relay of Jessica Patterson, Idil Ozer, Hannah Procter and Shelby Metzger placed first in a school-record time of 1:59.64, and the same foursome won the 400 free relay in 4:02.53.
Patterson also won the 100 butterfly (1:00.48) and 100 backstroke (1:01.92), Ozer was tops in the 200 individual medley (2:27.76) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.27), and Metzger won the 50 free (26.68) and was second in the 500 free in 5:58.65.
Also for Kelso, Abby Klein placed third in the 200 free in 2:22.16, and Procter placed fourth in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly.
MM second at district
OLYMPIA — Abigail Groffmann earned an individual state berth by finishing second in the 100 backstroke and also swam on Mark Morris’ state-qualifying 200 freestyle relay in the Southwest 2A District swimming meet at The Evergreen State College on Saturday.
The Monarchs finished second in the team standings with 303 points. Aberdeen won the district title with 367.
Groffmann clocked a 1:09.72 in the 100 back and is one of two individual MM swimmers who will compete at the Class 2A state meet this weekend at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
The top two place-winners from district advance to state. Janae Miller, who took third in the 50 freestyle (26.34) and 100 free (56.73), had already punched her state ticket by meeting state qualifying times.
The 200 free relay of Groffmann, Sarah Naglich, Brittany Jewett and Miller finished fourth on Saturday, but their time of 1:49.81 was good enough to get them to state.
Also for the Monarchs on Saturday, the 200 medley relay of Mikayla Bell, Tasha Shero, Kelly Hill and Naglich was sixth (2:08.06); Shero was fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:36.04) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.64); Alley Jewett took seventh in the 200 IM (2:39.10); Groffmann was eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:15.61); Bell was eighth in the 500 free (6:27.52) and sixth in the 100 back (1:13.62); and the 400 free relay of Groffmann, Brittany Jewett, Shero and Miller placed third (4:09.40).
