CASTLE ROCK — Castle Rock’s blend of veterans and varsity newcomers continued propelling the Rockets’ stellar season Tuesday in a 25-14, 25-16, 25-15 victory over rival Kalama in a SWW 1A Trico Division volleyball match.

"We have a solid mix of upper- and lower-classmen," Rockets coach Jeana Bayes said. "They’ve done an exceptional job of coming together as a team."

CR’s freshman trio of Macee Utecht (11 kills, seven digs, five points), Tierney Uhlenkott (nine kills, seven blocks, 12 points) and Maddi Seidl (34 assists, six digs, nine service points) "dominated the court," Bayes said.

"We seem to have a mental block against Castle Rock," said Chinooks coach Jeni O’Neil. "It’s very frustrating."

Blaine Land (16 kills) and Jordyn Wirkkala (15 kills) had monster nights at the net for Wahkiakum (7-4 league), which closes out its Central 2B campaign at Napavine on Thursday, and could end up in third or fourth place depending on that and other outcomes.

Skyview fought off a relentless Kelso squad and secured a 25-14, 25-13, 25-16 victory in a Greater St. Helens 4A League volleyball match on Tuesday.

"Kelso played their hearts out. They would not give up," said Lassies coach Abby Guttormsen. "The scores do not reflect how well Kelso played."

Jenna DeRosier had five kills and four blocks to pace Kelso (2-7 league). Lana Nyman added

six kills and 10 digs, Carly Sims had three blocks and Krystle Tsuda had nine digs.

Spuds mash Jills in four

RIDGEFIELD — R.A. Long burst out of the gate with a 25-13 victory in Game 1, but it was all downhill from there as Ridgefield rolled in the next three games 25-20, 25-20, 25-9 in Greater St. Helens 2A League volleyball action Tuesday.

"It was kind of business as usual for us. We start out playing like a team, we look good, then a few mistakes happen and, one-by-one, we have players who give up," RAL coach Jennifer Helfey said.

The Jills (4-5 league) are the league’s No. 4 representative to the district tourney, unless third-place Ridgefield loses to Woodland on Thursday. RAL also has to defeat Washougal at home on Senior Night.

Spudders top RAL 3-0

RIDGEFIELD — R.A. Long’s defense held Ridgefield scoreless in the first half, but the Spudders netted three goals in the second period for a 3-0 victory in GSHL 2A soccer Tuesday.

"The girls played very well, but there were a few calls that swayed the match in favor of Ridgefield," RAL coach John Bates said. "It was a very physical game, and I’m proud of the way the girls conducted themselves on the field with class."

RAL hosts Washougal for Senior Night at Longview Memorial Stadium on Thursday.

Skyview outlasts Kelso

Kelso went toe-to-toe with first-place Skyview for more than a half at Schroeder Field on Tuesday, but an own-goal deflated the Lassies and led to a 3-0 victory by the Storm in Greater St. Helens 4A League soccer action.

"Skyview is an amazing club, and we played a monster game," Kelso coach John Fromdahl said. "They had to earn their victory."

Skyview had 11 shots and Kelso eight in the first half, and each had three shots-on-goal. The Lassies successfully employed a high press trap that disrupted the Storm’s precision passing attack heading into halftime.

But 10 minutes into the second half, Kelso tried to clear a ball from its own area only to have it carom off one of its own players and into the net. Skyview added two more goals over the next

15 minutes.

Alyson Dillehay, Brittany Carterby, Cassy Teig and Paytyn Wheeler were defensive standouts, and Jena Bloomfeldt "made some very dangerous run and had three shots in the first half, allowing us to keep a little pressure on (Skyview’s) defense," added Fromdahl.

Teig, Bloomfeldt and fellow seniors Makayla Walters and Taylor McCormick played their final home match for Kelso (7-6-2,

3-4-2), which visits Battle Ground on Thursday.
