OLYMPIA — Mark Morris’ Janae Miller finished first in two events during the preliminaries of the Southwest 2A District girls swimming meet at The Evergreen State College on Friday.

Miller posted the top times in the 50 freestyle (25.99 seconds) and 100 free (59.93), and will swim for a state berth Saturday in the finals. The top two placers in individual events and relays advance to state later this month.

The Monarchs also got a strong swim from Abigail Groffmann in the 100 butterfly. She was second in the prelims with a time of 1:10.89.

The top eight finishers compete in Saturday’s finals, while those in the 9-16 slots swim in the consolation finals. Team points are available in both divisions.

Other top-eight swimmers for the Monarchs were Tasha Shero in the 200 individual medley (fifth, 2:33.55) and 100 breaststroke (seventh, 1:19.32); Alley Jewett in the 200 IM (sixth, 2:38.72); Groffmann in the 100 butterfly (1:12.03); and Mikayla Bell in the 500 free (6:31.04) and 100 backstroke (sixth, 1:13.79).

Ten other Monarchs will compete in the consolation finals.

The relay finals will also be held Saturday.
