PORTLAND — Astoria’s Jordan Poyer has been named the first recipient of the Brian T. Meehan Oregon Baseball Player of the Year award.

Meehan was a longtime reporter and columnist for The Oregonian who died last July at age 57. Friends, family and colleagues created the annual award and a scholarship in his honor.

Roosevelt High School’s Berenise Delgado received the inaugural Brian T. Meehan Memorial Scholarship for academic, athletic and extracurricular achievement.

Poyer, a three-sport athlete, helped the Fishermen to two state baseball titles over his four years. He finished with a .424 batting average and was 25-6 as a pitcher.

Poyer and Delgado plan to attend Oregon State next fall.
