The postseason accolades are rolling in for some of the area’s top high school baseball players. The Skagit Valley Herald newspaper of Mount Vernon announced its Washington State Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams on Tuesday, with Kelso senior southpaw Chris Armstead making the 19-man first-team roster.
Armstead, who has already announced he’ll pitch for Lower Columbia College next season, was the Greater St. Helens 4A League’s Player of the Year after posting a 6-1 record. The Hilanders’ ace teamed with Trevor May to help Kelso to the 3A state title game in 2008, and he was instrumental in the team’s district championship run this past season.
Kelso’s Makaio Mobbs, a sophomore who started the season on the junior varsity, was the Hilanders’ best clutch hitter down the stretch and was rewarded with a second-team all-state nod in the outfield.
Shortstop Spencer Downs, perhaps the team’s steadiest player in the past two seasons, also made the second team as an infielder.
Four players from the state runner-up Kalama Chinooks dominated the combined Class 1A/B all-state squad.
Junior pitcher Nick LaRoy was a first-team selection at pitcher/outfielder after finishing 9-0 with a 0.30 earned run average on the mound and batting .512 with 24 RBIs. LaRoy tossed three no-hitters, including a 21-strikeout gem in an 8-0 victory over Stevenson.
LaRoy struck out 114 in 46 innings before sustaining an elbow injury that sidelined him for the Final Four state tournament in Yakima.
Robby Sanders, the Chinooks’ steady No. 3 hitter in the lineup, also made the all-state first team as an infielder. Second-team picks from Kalama included third baseman Robbie Neal and pitcher/infielder Brandon Walker.
Castle Rock’s Mike Murray completed his senior season with a second-team selection in the outfield.
Thomas Wilcox of Naches Valley, which defeated Kalama in the 1A state title game, was named Player of the Year.
