Mark Morris got wins from its Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams, but it wasn’t enough as the Monarchs dropped a 4-2 decision to W.F. West in nonleague boys tennis action Friday at the MM courts.

Jared Walker and Chris London rolled 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, and Ethan Winters and Patrick Domreis prevailed 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Mark Morris’ No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Dawkins and Kelly Gilchrist dropped a three-set, three-hour marathon 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

“W.F. West is a real quality team, with two of the best singles players in the district,” MM coach Tom Johnson said.

SWIMMING

MM quartet takes first

The 200 breaststroke relay of Mercedes DeBruler, Tasha Shero, Alley Jewett and Allyson Swanstrom captured first place for Mark Morris in the Greater St. Helens League Relays on Thursday at Dick Mealy Memorial Pool.

The MM team won in 2 minutes, 41.21 seconds. Nearly 250 swimmers from 13 GSHL teams in Class 2A, 3A and 4A competed in the meet. No team scores were kept.

Also for MM, the 400 individual medley took second in 4:59.22, with Shero, Brittany Jewett, Abbie Groffman and Sarah Naglich. The 200 freestyle freshman-sophomore relay of Janae Miller, Miranda Lecker, Groffman and Shero placed first in 1:54.50, and Miller achieved a state qualifying time for the 50 free (26.22) in the leadoff leg of the relay.

The top placer for R.A. Long was the 400 free relay of Deborah Dolphin, Kaydee Shaw, Cassie Woods and Tara Haas (15th, 5:24.14).

Kelso nabbed a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke relay (2:46.25) with Kyrstin Despain, Hannah Procter, Erin Mueller and Idil Ozer, and in the 200 medley relay (2:03.96) with Jessica Patterson, Ozer, Procter and Shelby Metzger.

CROSS COUNTRY

Bussing 5th at Run-A-Ree

VANCOUVER — The Mark Morris boys took fourth in the 15-team Hudson’s Bay Run-A-Ree cross country meet Friday, led by Chase Bussing’s fifth-place finish.

Bussing completed the race in 16 minutes, 50 seconds.

“The boys ran extremely well against this caliber of competition,” MM coach Mike Olin said. “I’m very pleased with everyone’s effort.”

Andres Rodriguez placed 17th in 17:42, followed by Blake Bussing (25th 18:08), David Klinginsmith (26th, 18:09) and Mavrick Knoles (28th, 18:11).

Savina Rodriguez, MM’s lone girls’ runner, placed 34th in 22:31.

For the R.A. Long girls, who were eighth as a team, Dani Eggleston turned in a strong effort and placed ninth in 20:44. Allison Schneider (42nd, 24:00), Jessica Johanson (44th, 24:10), Leah Ahrens (52nd, 25:13) and Rachael Washington (56th, 25:45) rounded out the RAL lineup.

On the boys’ side, the Lumberjacks placed 12th as a team, led by Nathan Richards (16th, 17:36). Kyle Estes (66th, 20:08), Garrett Wittrock (69th, 20:10), Bill Devenport (71st, 20:15) and Andrew Galloway (77th, 20:43) also competed for RAL.

“Dani and Nathan, they ran great races. We had some others who were sick, and when it’s near 90 degrees, that makes it even tougher,” RAL coach Nick Stumbo said. “Dani ran a great race to break the top 10 against that kind of competition.”

Kelso wins its division

HILLSBORO — Kelso’s boys and girls ran to victory, winning the Class 4A Division in both ends of the Hillsboro Invitational cross country meet on Friday.

Caitlin Wood led the Kelso girls with a seventh place finish, followed by Kelly Swanson (10th), Jessica Bork (11th), Elle Mustion and Grace Tolby.

In the boys race, Garrett McDaniel led Kelso, followed by Mason Bullock, Daylon Norman, Niko Hughes and Taylor Mickens. No times or places were reported.

Kelso visits Battle Ground Tuesday, and hosts the Kelso Invitational on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

Beavers turn away Kelso

Cassidy Bragg served 18 points with two aces and made 11 kills as Woodland beat Kelso 25-14, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14 in nonleague volleyball at Kelso on Thursday.

Also for Woodland, Kylie Moses served 17-18 with two aces and dished 18 assists, Rikki Hall handed out 18 assists and Charity Arn chipped in eight kills.

Loggers topple Ilwaco

KNAPPA, Ore. — Sydney Ward was solid all-around with seven kills, two ace serves and two digs, but Ilwaco dropped a 21-25, 25-8, 25-19, 25-9 decision to the Knappa Loggers in nonleague volleyball on Thursday.

Also for Ilwaco, Alexa Wirkkala served three aces, had two digs and three kills, Tirsha Cass had six digs and two kills, Breanna Smallwood served three aces and Heidi Reichelt added two.

Mark Morris def. Evergreen 25-7, 25-7, 15-10 — Carly Grindstaff served seven aces, Kenzie McDaniel served five aces and had three kills, and Mackenzie Hastings added five kills.

Tennis

Mark Morris 2, W.F. West 1 — The doubles teams of Gabe Olano and Steven Pond (6-1), and Grant Avalon and Smyth May (6-1) won their matches.
