MONMOUTH, Ore. — When she was a sophomore, Rainier track standout Kayla Nagunst overcame foot injuries to place in the top four in a pair of events at the 2007 Class 3A state track meet.
Nagunst hit the lanes with a clean bill of health here Saturday at Western Oregon University in the ’09 championships, and no one could hang with the speedy junior.
Nagunst captured state titles in the 400 and 800, tying a school record in the process. Three of her teammates on the Rainier boys’ team also placed in the top eight.
Nagunst won the 400 in 58.5, tying the Rainier girls’ school record, and won the 800 in 2:17.97.
“She struggled last season,” Columbians coach Travis Nagunst said. “Not this year.”
Despite her foot issues last season, Nagust was third in the 800 and fourth in the 400.
Catlin Gabel, which competes with Rainier in the Lewis and Clark 3A League, won the girls’ team state title with a meet-record 105 points.
Rainier’s Tianna Gibson was ninth in the shot put at 32-0.
For the Columbians boys, Alex Field was fifth in the javelin at 166-9, Nathan Stecker was sixth in the pole vault at 10-9 and Aaron Salisbury was seventh in the discus at 119-2.
Westside Christian won the boys’ team title.
