The Mark Morris, Rainier and Clatskanie football teams will each host first-round state playoff games this weekend. R.A. Long, Toledo and Naselle will begin their state title quests on the road.
Mark Morris (9-1) hosts Interlake of Bellevue (7-3) in a Class 2A state playoff on Saturday at a time to be determined. Interlake defeated North Mason 47-23 Tuesday night in a state play-in game.
Interlake is a 2A team, but plays in the tough Kingco Conference during the regular season.
The winner of Saturday’s game advances to the quarterfinals to face either Clarkston (5-5) or top-ranked Ellensburg (10-0) on the weekend of Nov. 21-22.
The Greater St. Helens 2A League champion Monarchs crushed River Ridge 55-13 on Saturday in a Southwest 2A District crossover game.
Rainier (8-2) hosts Glide in an Oregon Class 3A state playoff at 7 p.m. Friday, with the winner advancing to face either Santiam Christian or Sheridan. Santiam Christian dealt the Lewis and Clark 3A League champion Columbians one of their two losses this season, 3-0 at home on Sept. 11.
Glide is the No. 3 team from the Sunset Conference in southern Oregon.
Clatskanie, which finished second in the Lewis and Clark behind Rainier, hosts Toledo, Ore., in another 3A playoff at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Boomers are the No. 2 representative from the PacWest Conference.
The winner draws Burns or Amity in the next round.
R.A. Long (8-2) scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:21 left in the fourth quarter of its 16-14 victory over Tumwater on Friday. The win represented the first playoff victory in program history for the Jacks, who will make their first state appearance at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mariner High School against perennial state power Archbishop Murphy (9-1).
The Wildcats are ranked second in the state.
Toledo’s defense controlled the field in its 14-6 win at Castle Rock on Friday in a Southwest 1A District crossover. The Indians (8-2) visit third-ranked Cascade Christian (10-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
The lone local Class 2B team still standing is Naselle. The 10th-ranked Comets (9-1) take on fourth-ranked Tacoma Baptist (10-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Curtis High School in University Place. The game was original scheduled for Saturday, but Curtis took the Saturday slot for its 4A playoff against Central Kitsap.
Naselle advanced to the 2B state semifinals in 2008 before losing to eventual champion Napavine.
