WASHOUGAL — Dan Feeney ran for a pair of first-half touchdowns as Mark Morris rolled to a 27-0 victory over Washougal in GSHL 2A football at Fishback Stadium on Friday.
“It’s a win,” MM coach Shawn Perkins said. “We didn’t play as well as we had hoped at times, but we got the job done. Washougal played better in the second half and had great intensity. I give a lot of credit to Josh (Washougal coach Gibson) for getting his team ready.”
MM (4-1, 1-0 league) scored all of its points in the first half. Feeney scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter, and added a 3-yard TD gallop early in the second. Jeremy Wolf scored later in the quarter on a 3-yard run, and Sean Atkins hauled in an 18-yard scoring pass from Scott Kirkpatrick before halftime.
The Monarchs amassed 237 of their 341 offensive yards on the ground, while holding Washougal to a combined 115 yards. Braydon Poole rushed for 56 yards and Feeney carried the ball for 52.
“We played well defensively and was able to keep them in front of us while bringing the heat,” Perkins said. “Overall we played all right, but we’ll need to improve a lot before next week.”
Perkins praised the play of Colton Carpenter, Josh Larson and Jake McCoy.

Vikings plunder Naselle
NASELLE — In the eyes of the Naselle defense, it almost seemed like Willapa Valley quarterback Matt Friese was wearing a non-stick uniform.
The eel-slick quarterback slithered out of the grasp of tackles to keep drives alive as the Vikings claimed a 21-6 victory over the sixth-ranked Comets on Friday in Pacific 2B League action.
“We had a very hard time tackling him,” Naselle coach Jeff Eaton said. “We had him in numerous third-and-5 situations, and we’d hit him and he’d spin out and fall forward to get the yards he needed.”
Valley scored twice in the first half for a 14-0 lead at the break, and Naselle scored early in the fourth quarter when Jesus Martinez caught a 4-yard pass from Austin Burkhalter.
Friese put the finishing touches on the game when he scampered 40 yards on a counter play to the end zone.
Naselle (4-1, 1-1 league) rushed for 191 of its 242 yards. Alan Erickson toted the ball 15 times for 83, and Logan Scrabeck added 14 touches for 70. Defensively, Erickson had 13 tackles, Nick Zimmerman had five and a fumble recovery, Burkhalter made an interception and Martinez had a quarterback sack.

Toutle Lake holds off VC
TOUTLE — Tyler Elam rushed for 126 yards on 23 carries and was a key defensive standout from his linebacker spot as Toutle Lake handled a much-improved Vancouver Christian squad 19-14 in a Central 2B League football game Friday.
“We’re both working at getting better,” TL coach Scott Grabenhorst said. “Our defense, as a whole, played well. They (the Light) run a real tight Wing-T offense, with kind of a big mass of bodies. I thought our defensive line did a good job against it.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Chris Foster scored on a 5-yard run to give TL a 7-0 lead it would not relinquish. Cody O’Connor rumbled in from 20 yards in the third period for a 13-6 Toutle lead, and Zac Hayes found the end zone from 2 yards for a 19-6 advantage in the fourth.
VC punched in its final TD with 5:30 remaining.
Toutle recovered an onside kick by the Light, then put together a drive to run out the clock.
Zac Morain had an interception for the Ducks that helped set up a touchdown.

Indians stuff late conversion
TENINO — Toledo stopped a two-point conversion by Tenino with 48 seconds left as the Indians held on for a 20-19 victory in SWW 1A Evergreen football on Friday.
“We didn’t play that well and had some costly penalties,” Toledo coach Perry Herbst said. “We moved the ball, but we have some things we need to clean up before next week.”
D.J. Herbert scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter, and Nick Stevenson added a pair of 1-yard scoring plunges in the second and third quarter as the Indians took a 20-13 lead into the final quarter.
Toledo ran for 320 of its 404 offensive yards, while holding Tenino to 275 yards. Herbert toted the ball 15 times for 124 yards, Brycen Holmes added 18 carries for 80, and Stevenson added 15 touches for 60.
Herbst also praised the play of Herbert and middle linebacker Preston Tomes.

Chinooks mount comeback
ILWACO — Ilwaco put Kalama on its heels early, but the Chinooks shook off the blows and recovered for a 45-20 victory in a SWW 1A Trico matchup on Friday.
The Fishermen took the opening kickoff and drove to the end zone, culminating with a Taylor Odneal scamper from the 2. Kalama’s Sean McVicker returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown, and Odneal added a 57-yard scoring rumble later in the period.
But Kalama sophomore Ethan Oomittuk promptly hit Alex Hauserman with a 53-yard touchdown pass that left the Fishermen clinging to a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, despite having allowed the Chinooks’ offense on the field for only two plays.
“We got off to a good start, shocked them a little,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty said. “It was as good a first quarter as we’ve played all season. After that, the kids looked at the scoreboard and were not accustomed to that position. They found ways to give up big plays.”
Once the Chinooks’ offense got rolling, Ilwaco’s tenuous advantage disappeared. Nathan Wilfong punched in two unanswered scores in the second quarter on runs of 56 and 3 yards, putting the Chinooks up for good.
“We kind of woke up a little bit,” Kalama coach Mark Buchanan said. “They came out and played aggressively in the first quarter, and our kids didn’t respond very well.”
Oomittuk and Hauserman struck again in the second half on a 79-yard touchdown, and Wilfong scored from the 7. Finally, Oomittuk broke loose for an 84-yard run that set up Wilfong’s final score from the 6. Justin Short scored Ilwaco’s last touchdown on a 1-yard run.
Wilfong ran the ball 13 times for 127 yards, and Oomittuk was 2-for-4 for an improbable 132 yards and the two TDs.
Defensively, Wilfong was among Kalama’s standouts at middle linebacker, as was end Billy Chronis.

Tigers lose in a shootout
SALEM — Clatskanie maintained a lead over Class 2A Blanchet for much of Friday night’s nonleague football game, but dropped a 55-49 decision at Willamette University.
Clatskanie piled up 369 rushing yards. Leading the way was John Harvey with 22 carries for 179 yards, including scoring dashes of 40 and 65. Braidon Nicholson carried the ball 19 times for 95 yards and scored a 41-yard TD, while Jeron Cruz added a 53-yard TD.
The Tigers’ Cameron Carson threw for 110 yards, finding Zach Krause and Harvey for touchdowns. As Clatskanie drove the ball with less than 50 seconds to play, Carson also threw the interception that sealed the game.
The Cavaliers shredded Clatskanie’s secondary for 424 passing yards. Krause, Jason Childers, Brad White, and Eli Pesio were among the Tigers who turned in good performances on the defensive side of the ball.
Clatskanie (0-5) hosts Chief Sealth next Saturday at 3 p.m.

Mules topple Trojans, 28-14
PE ELL — Wahkiakum met Pe Ell’s challenge on Friday, overcoming an opening-play touchdown for a 28-14 victory in Central 2B League football action.
The Trojans sprinted for a 94-yard score on their first play from scrimmage, but Wahkiakum answered less than two minutes later when Zach Schneider capped a drive with a 5-yard TD run. Early in the second quarter, Bryce McClain hauled in Brandon Fudge’s 12-yard toss for six more points.
Tyson Bain stepped up and made the next big play, stripping the ball and carrying it 7 yards for a defensive touchdown. With 50 seconds left before the break, the Mules gave up the last score they would allow all night.
Fudge gave Wahkiakum some insurance with a 44-yard throw to Zach Pierce, but the Pe Ell ground game was hitting too much resistance to answer back. After that 94-yard opener, the Trojans gained only 72 more on the ground.
Schneider had 22 carries for 163 yards, and McClain gained 103 on 15 tries for the Mules (4-1).
