Prep Roundup: Ducks ruffle Seagulls' feathers for tourney win

MONTESANO — Toutle Lake slapped a defensive vice on Raymond in the second and third quarters, and cruised to a 46-25 victory over the Seagulls in the quarterfinals of the Southwest 2B District girls basketball tournament on Thursday.

The Ducks (13-9) advanced to the semifinals against North Beach on Wednesday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis. Game time has not been announced.

Toutle raced to an 8-2 lead, but the Gulls rallied for a 10-9 edge after the first quarter. From there, the Ducks “flew around and caused havoc,” said head coach Larry Hoff, and combined to outscore Raymond 30-8 in the middle two periods.

Nichole Locke came off the bench to score four of her six points in the second quarter to help ignite the Ducks. Christian Carlson led TL with 13 points and Kiana Saluni scored nine.

Toledo runs past Forks

TUMWATER — Toledo used a big second quarter to pull away from Forks 42-33 in the opening round of the Southwest 1A District girls basketball tournament Thursday night.

“We got after it in the second quarter and got some good transition baskets,” Toledo coach Mandie Olson said. “We were in a slump in the third quarter, and they got our lead down to six points at one point. But we closed the game solid.”

The Indians (16-4) had a five-point edge with 50 seconds left when Kelsey Stone buried a 3-pointer to put the Spartans away.

Tiffany Tornow led a balanced Toledo attack with nine points. Ashlee Coffey added eight points and five rebounds, and Stone dished four assists.

The Indians take on Ilwaco at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mark Morris in the semifinals, with a state berth on the line.

Hawks handle Woodland

WOODLAND — Freshman Emily Smith provided a glimpse into Woodland’s bright future in the Beavers’ season-ending 68-36 loss to Hockinson here Thursday.

Smith had 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in the loss.

Mackenzie Heberer added five points for Woodland, which finished its season 7-12.

Rockets lose heartbreaker

TUMWATER — Castle Rock had three shots to tie the game in the final 14 seconds but could not convert and fell 53-51 to Rainier, Wash., here Thursday in the first round of the Southwest 1A District girls basketball tournament.

The Rockets (12-6) trailed by eight points with two minutes remaining but closed to within two thanks to some steals and fast-break baskets by Lacey Seidl.

“It was close the whole game,” CR coach Scott Spencer said. “We definitely had our chances. It was one of those games where you knew it would come down to the bitter end. The kids played very well and very hard.”

Castle Rock will face La Center or Onalaska at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Mark Morris in a loser-out game.

Against the Mountaineers, Seidl had 22 points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Chelsea Mitchell added 11 points, nine rebounds and five steals, and Kayleigh Klingberg had seven points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Lumberjills clinch third

WASHOUGAL — R.A. Long overcame a fired-up Washougal squad to clinch third place in the Greater St. Helens 2A League with a 53-43 victory here Thursday.

Katie Gudgell had 17 points, four steals and three assists, and Kelsey Craft added 12 points, two steals and two blocked shots for the Lumberjills (9-11).

R.A. Long will open the Southwest 2A District tournament at 7 p.m. on Friday at either third-ranked Black Hills or 10th-ranked Tumwater.

“It’s time to play our best offense and our best defense of the season,” RAL coach J.D. Ott said.

Against Washougal, the Jills won the second half 33-23.

“We came out and were the aggressors,” said Ott.

Sadie Petersen had eight points and five assists, and Tirzah Coalman grabbed six rebounds for the winners.

Spuds take out Monarchs

RIDGEFIELD — Mark Morris trailed second-place Ridgefield by just two points at halftime, but came out cold in the third quarter and fell to the Spudders 66-50 in the Greater St. Helens 2A League girls basketball regular-season finale Thursday night.

A 10-of-28 performance at the free-throw line also didn’t help matters for the Monarchs, along with Ridgefield’s 48-percent shooting from the field — most of it coming from the perimeter after MM shut off the inside.

MM (8-11, 3-7 league) hosts the No. 5 team from the Evergreen Conference in the district pigtail game on Tuesday.

“I thought our entire bench came in and did a terrific job,” Monarchs coach Scott Ruhland said. “We were in serious foul trouble in the first half, and our bench kids helped us keep it at a two-point game going into halftime.”

Taybra Teeters led MM with 10 points and nine rebounds. Kelee Lambert added 10 points, and Kaytlin Ingman (seven rebounds) and Nicole Duscha (six) also played well.

Tigers headed to state

PORTLAND — Clatskanie secured the Lewis and Clark League’s third and final berth to the Oregon 3A state tournament with a 67-56 win over Oregon Episcopal here Thursday in a boys basketball playoff game.

K.C. Taylor scored 17 points and made four steals, and nailed a huge 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter after OES trimmed its deficit to two points.

“It was a big win for us, especially coming on the road,” Clatskanie coach Keith Sloderbeck said. “That 3-pointer by Taylor was the spark plug that helped us put it away.”

Ethan Andrews added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (17-9), who open the state playoffs on Feb. 27 at either Regis or Santiam Christian.

Trevor Marioni chipped in 10 points and eight boards, and Andrews also dished four assists. Danny Somes (11 points) and Chris Wood (10) came off the bench to supply and offensive punch for Clatskanie.
