CHENEY — Jasmine Bingham and Sarah Doumit of Wahkiakum found the 90-plus temperatures at Eastern Washington University to their liking on Friday.
Bingham, better known as a standout sprinter for the Mules, won the Class 2B girls’ long jump championship with a school-record leap of 17 feet, 3 inches. She beat the old mark held by Michelle Thomas (1985) by 2 inches.
Doumit, meanwhile, captured the state crown in the high jump at 5-3. She and Bingham are seniors making their fourth trip to state.
“I think it was more of a mental game for those girls,” Wahkiakum coach Mike Riley said. “They’ve been here enough and learned how to handle the pressure. It was a lot of fun seeing them finally meet their goals.”
Riley credited volunteer assistant coach Alex Docker for working with Bingham on her jumping.
“He’s been telling her to focus more on her jump and not on her run-up,” Riley said. “We knew she had it in her.”
Bingham qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200 sprints, winning both of her heats.
Bingham and Doumit pushed Wahkiakum atop the girls’ team standings with 20 points, with White Pass in third with 11. Toutle Lake is 19th with three.
Toutle Lake’s Maddi Timm finished sixth in the high jump at 4-10.
“Maddi rolled her ankle on her non-jumping leg on Thursday,” TL coach Jon Davidson said. “It might have cost her a place or two.”
Naselle’s Tylor Nortrup finished third in the boys’ pole vault at 12 feet. Marshall Fryberger of Lind-Ritzville won the event at 13-6, followed by Matt Friese of Willapa Valley at 12-6.
Willapa Valley lead the boys standings with 23 points, and Naselle is 12th with six points.
Coffey defends state title
CHENEY — Toledo senior Ashlee Coffey defended her shot put title, and two teammates grabbed top-six placings in their respective events after the opening day of the Class 1A state track and field meet at Eastern Washington University on Friday.
Coffey, who won the event last year with a throw of 40 feet, 10 1/2 inches, repeated as champion with a toss of 40 feet, 3/4 inch. Danielle Himango of Nooksack Valley was a distant second at 37-9.
Toledo’s Lacey Scott placed sixth in the long jump at 15-9 and Jeanessa Durham was sixth in the javelin at 117-8.
Jill Campbell of Kalama finished 14th in the long jump at 14-11 1/4 and Kaylee Brown was 15th in the 1600 in 5:52.3.
Lakeside leads the girls’ team standings with 18 points, with Toledo and La Center tied for second with 16 apiece.
In the boys’ events, Kalama’s Aspen Owen was ninth in the triple jump at 40-5 1/2 and Jake Clizbe finished 11th in the high jump at 5-8.

RAL’s Dani Eggleston finished 12th in the 3200 in 11:59.33, and Amanda Wallis of Mark Morris was 11th in the pole vault at 9-6. Mackenzie Ripp of Woodland tossed the javelin 101-7 to finish in 13th place.

Beavers move into semis
SELAH — Woodland has entered uncharted waters as Emily Holt pitched and hit the Beavers into the semifinals of the Class 2A state fastpitch tournament at Carlon Park on Friday.
Woodland shut out Blaine 10-0 in its opener and blanked Colville 3-0 in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinal game with Ellensburg at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner moves into the title game against either Tumwater or Burlington-Edison at 2, while the loser drops into a consolation game at noon.
“We’ve never been here before, so the girls are really excited,” Woodland coach Damon Yeo said. “We’ve got a chance, but Ellensburg is really tough and it’s going to be a battle.”
Yeo also noted that temperatures reached the mid-90s, and evening games had to be stopped because of a thunderstorm.
Holt twirled a one-hitter, struck out 13 and belted a solo home run in the Beavers’ opener with Blaine. Cami Pearson and Kylie Moses added two hits apiece as the Beavers finished with seven.
In the quarterfinal matchup with Colville, Holt scattered two hits and struck out 16. Holt had two of the Beavers’ five hits including a homer, Pearson added two hits and Moses had one.
Rockets post two wins
PASCO — Castle Rock had little trouble disposing of top-ranked Connell in the opener, and blitzed Cascade-Leavenworth in the quarterfinals during the first day of the Class 1A state fastpitch tournament at TRAC on Friday.
The Rockets shut down previously undefeated Connell 4-1 in the opener and topped Cascade of Leavenworth 6-2. CR meets Onalaska in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Loggers beat the Rockets 2-0 in a district tournament game earlier this month.
Castle Rock led 2-0 over Connell going into the seventh inning when Lacey Seidl walked, stole second and came home on a towering home run to center field from Kayleigh Klingberg.
Klingberg finished with three hits including a double and triple, and scored twice. Maddi Klingberg added a double to back the five-hit, six-strikout pitching of Danielle Nevers.
“The Connell pitcher was highly rated and it took us a while to get to her, except for the Klingberg girls,” CR coach Jim Van Fleet said.
In the victory over Cascade, Nevers scattered four hits and struck out five through four innings before yielding to relievers Brittany Keeling and Regan Smith.
“I’m really proud of how well Danielle threw,” Van Fleet said. “She pitched 11 innings in the heat on her birthday and was very solid.”
Kayleigh Klingberg had two hits and knocked in a run, and Lindsay Melton added two hits with a double and a run. Miranda Meredith had a hit and two RBIs, and Megan Moore chipped in a hit and scored once.
Defensive standouts included freshman Meredith at third base, Megan Moore in right field and catcher Samantha Moore.

Columbians fall in nail-biter
WILLAMINA, Ore. — Willamina rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Rainier 8-7 in an Oregon 3A state quarterfinal baseball game Friday afternoon.
Blake Zytniowski’s three-run home run in the second inning gave the Columbians an early lead, and they still led 7-5 after four innings.
But the Bulldogs tallied once in the fifth and two in the seventh on a dropped ball, an error and an overthrow to the plate as the winning run crossed the plate.
“It was a tough way to lose, but it was a great game and I couldn’t be more proud of my team,” Rainier coach Fred Olson said. “It was pressure packed and well-played by both sides. I’m real happy with my guys. We have nine seniors leaving us and we’re going to miss them.”
The Columbians (14-8) banged out 11 hits, with Zytniowski (3-for-4) leading the way. His three-run blast was the first home run of his high school career.
Dalton Earlywine was 2-for-4 and Josh Linn finished 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Brad Tripp, Daryl Paddock and Riley Tripp saw mound time for the Columbians.
