Castle Rock won a district title, while Mark Morris and R.A. Long clinched state tournament berths in postseason volleyball action Saturday.
In the Southwest 1A District at Castle Rock, the host Rockets steamrolled Montesano 25-14, 25-17, 25-15 to claim their second straight district crown.
“We were determined to bring home the hardware for the second year in a row,” said Rockets coach Jeana Bayes, whose team finished second in the state tourney last November. “It’s a great feeling to take second at state, graduate six seniors and still win district, it’s a great feeling.”
Mark Morris dropped a 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 decision to Black Hills in the Southwest 2A District championship match at Tumwater High School on Saturday afternoon, but still secured the 11th trip to state in Lisa Verage’s 17 seasons as head coach.
Earlier Saturday, the Monarchs dug themselves a deep hole before rallying to knock off Tumwater 19-25, 12-25, 25-21, 25-23, 16-14 in the semifinals to officially earn a state berth. MM trailed 21-11 in the fourth game.
R.A. Long, meanwhile, clinched its first trip to the 2A state tourney since 2006 by beating Tumwater 26-24, 12-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12 in the consolation round at Tumwater High School.
The Lumberjills are the No. 3 team from the district. They and the Monarchs compete in the state tourney Friday and Saturday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
Class 1A
Three of Castle Rock’s six starters are freshmen, but that hasn’t made a difference all season for the Trico Division champs. And it certainly didn’t hurt on Saturday.
Tierney Uhlenkott had a huge title match against Montesano with 14 kills, five stuff blocks, four digs and eight service points.
Macee Utecht (eight kills, 10 digs, eight service points), Megan Moore (strong back-row play, 14 digs, nine service points) and setter Maddi Seidl (35 assists, four stuff blocks, six digs, 10 service points) also played well for the Rockets (16-1).
Class 2A
Mark Morris made a lineup adjustment after dropping the first two games in the semifinals against Tumwater, and “kept playing hard with our hearts and making smart shots,” Verage said.
The result was a dramatic reversal of fortunes, as MM took the final three games to advance to the championship.
Kinzi Williams had a serving run to spark a comeback in Game 3, and the spectacular 10-point comeback in Game 4 followed.
Danielle Gilchrist (10 service points, 27 assists), Shantelle Savage (nine points, 10 kills, 23 digs), Shawna Smith (nine kills, 25 digs), Alesha Shulz (five kills, 20 digs), Jill Isaacson (seven points, four aces, 12 digs) and Taylor Trevino (five kills, four stuffs) led the Monarchs.
Black Hills swept MM in the title match, taking advantage of a tired Monarch crew.
“They a good club, with height and experience,” Verage said. “We had quite a battle in our first match, emotionally and physically.”
Gilchrist (seven points, 19 assists), Ellie Hultgren (three assists, four kills), Savage (five kills, nine digs), Isaacson (11 digs), Shulz (10 digs), Smith (four kills) and Trevino (six kills) were MM’s standouts.
R.A. Long coach Jennifer Hefley said her team decided to “start fresh” on Saturday when facing Tumwater for a state berth.
“We had a talk at practice, and we decided to start fresh and throw away everything that was bad for us this season,” she said. “It didn’t matter what happened so far this season, it was all about this match. The girls were very positive and very composed, and it was a total team effort.”
Hockinson, which lost its semifinal match to Black Hills before bouncing back to win its consolation match, is the fourth-place team to state based on a coin flip with RAL.
Rachel Morrow anchored the Lumberjills’ front-row attack with 11 kills and six blocks. Katie Sarysz added nine kills and two blocks, Aryn Aston had seven kills and Hannah Johnson dished 35 assists.
Meagan Hollis served 18-of-19 for 11 points, Johnson served 16-of-18 for eight points, Sarysz was 15-of-16 for 10 points, Kylie McGeary and Beka Spurgeon had five digs apiece and were solid in serve reception, and Aston was a defensive standout.
