RAINIER — Woodland was primed for battle when it crossed the river into Oregon on Friday to take on Rainier in a nonleague football matchup. The Beavers got what they wanted — and much, much more — as they edged the Columbians 28-22 in an overtime classic.
“Rainier is a very powerful and classy program,” Woodland head coach Mark Greenleaf said. “I’d rather win or lose the type of battle they have here than any other.”
The Beavers (3-0) scored the winning touchdown when Trevor Hurn hooked up with Shane Brady on a 25-yard pass play on third down.
“Our offensive line did a great job protecting Hurn until the end,” Greenleaf said. “We had some clutch catches by Shane Brady, who is a potential all-state player.”
Greenleaf also was pleased with his team’s composure in the wild finish.
“We had to fight to stop them in OT,” he said. “They have a punishing power game. (Rainier’s) Curtis Kauffman is one heck of a runner — he’s all they say he is.”
Kauffman finished with 207 yards on 32 carries.
The Beavers marched 63 yards in 11 plays to start the game, with Hurn completing 5-of-7 passes for 49 yards, including a 4-yarder to David Lubinski for the touchdown. Hurn tossed a 12-yard dart to Brady on third-and-10 at the 19 to keep the chains moving.
Rainier came right back with an impressive 12-play drive of its own, which included a 15-yard gallop by Ethan McGlone, a 16-yard pass from Riley Tripp to his brother, Brad Tripp, and a 12-yard burst by Kauffman down to the Woodland 6.
Two plays later, the Columbians coughed it up on the 1 when Riley Tripp mishandled the snap from center and Jake Elliott pounced on it for the Beavers.
Hurn was nearly sacked in the end zone for a safety several plays later, but flipped the ball deeper in the end zone to running back Cole Clark, who completed a 15-yard pass to Austin Ripp for a first down.
In the second quarter, the Beavers had to punt after three plays, giving Rainier the ball on its own 45-yard line.
Rainier put together a 15-play drive that chewed up 55 yards and nearly nine minutes when Kauffman made a 2-yard run into the end zone for a TD. After a false start and a 5-yard penalty on the extra-point attempt, Daryl Paddock ran the ball in for two, giving Rainier an 8-7 lead with 2:09 left in the half.
After two incomplete passes from Woodland’s 40-yard line, Rainier’s Cody Garrett intercepted a pass by Hurn and returned the ball to the 50 with 1:44 left. But the Columbians didn’t score again and took the 8-7 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Rainier quickly went up 14-7 on a 36-yard sprint by Kauffman, but couldn’t convert on the extra-point attempt after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty put the Columbians back to the 18.
Hurn hit Nick Fuller for a 10- and 15-yard completions, followed by an 11-yarder to Josh Gleason. A 23-yard bomb to Fuller in the end zone, followed by an extra-point kick by Elijah Denis, tied the game at 14-14.
Rainier’s next drive stalled on the 24-yard line, but the Columbians’ rolling, bouncing punt was recovered by Cody Garrett, giving Rainier the ball back on Woodland’s 37-yard line.
Eight plays later, the Columbians were first-and-goal on the 9 line when Kauffman was wrestled down inches from a TD by Woodland’s Steven Graham. On a third-and-inches play, Rainier again fumbled the handoff, turning the ball over to Woodland.
Rainier coach Thor Ware wondered if there was some kind of invisible wall a foot away from the goal line.
“We came up short twice,” Ware said. “Our offensive line was outstanding — Nick Huelter was amazing. Curtis ran the ball well and Brad did a great job. Our offense was really good. Their QB, Hurn, is great.”
The Columbians scored late in the third quarter with a 6-yard run by Kauffman and a two-point conversion run by Brad Tripp to take a 22-14 lead.
Woodland came back with a 44-yard pass play from Hurn to Brady, setting up a 1-yard run by Clark for a touchdown. Brady ran it in for two more, knotting it 22-22 and sending the game to OT.
Starting at the 25-yard line, Rainier’s drive stalled at the 20 when Mike Falk dropped Riley Tripp for a 1-yard loss. An incomplete pass on fourth-and-6 gave the ball to the Beavers.
Hurn was sacked by Kauffman for an 11-yard loss on the first play of Woodland’s possession, but Hurn responded with a 11-yard run and his toss to Brady for the winning TD.
Ethan McGlone added 66 on nine carries. Riley Tripp was 2-of-3 for 31 yards passing.
For Woodland, Hurn finished 15-of-21 for 227 yards.
