YAKIMA — Tierney Uhlenkott and Macee Utecht combined for 27 kills and eight stuff blocks as ninth-ranked Castle Rock swept Freeman 25-17, 25-23, 25-14 to capture fourth place in the Class 1A state volleyball tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Friday night.
The Rockets, who finished their season 19-2, topped seventh-ranked Lynden Christian 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 in a loser-out match earlier Friday to advance to the fourth-place matchup.
“We did some soul searching after the painful loss to Cascade on Thursday, and the girls were reminded of their ultimate dream of placing in the top four,” CR coach Jeana Bayes said. “Everyone was on and played really well in both matches.”
In the second game against Freeman, the Rockets let up their intensity and had to play from behind for the win.
“Ashley Moore stepped up and served out for us, and Tierney and Charlie (Hamilton) were really strong on the front row,” Bayes said. “This was a great ride for us this season and an amazing group of dedicated young ladies.”
Uhlenkott was solid all-around with 14 kills, five stuff blocks and six service points, including four aces, and Utecht had 13 kills, three stuff blocks, six digs and six points.
Moore served 13 points with five aces and had six digs, Maddi Seidl dished 30 assists, served six points, made five digs and five blocks, and Megan Moore chipped in seven digs and 12 points.
In the Lynden Christian match, Uhlenkott hammered 10 kills, made six blocks, served 10 points with three aces and made four digs.
TL advances to quarters
YAKIMA — Caitlin Perrin had 12 kills and Abby Gorton handed out 16 assists as sixth-ranked Toutle Lake overcame a shaky first game to top 12th-ranked Reardan 16-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-12 in the first round of the Class 2B state volleyball tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Friday.
The Ducks (17-1) meet 11th-ranked Kittitas in a quarterfinal match at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. A victory would send TL into a semifinal contest at 3:30. The championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hayley Gorton added 10 assists, Payton Hoff had four kills and Perrin served three aces. Maddi Timm chipped in five kills and four blocks, and earned the match Sportsmanship Award from the WIAA.
TRC falls to Klickitat
YAKIMA — Three Rivers Christian opted to play it safe in its opening-round match with 15th-ranked Klickitat in the Class 1B state volleyball tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Ffiday, and the decision was costly.
Klickitat topped the Eagles 25-14, 29-27, 21-25, 25-8, sending them into the consolation bracket. TRC (14-5) plays Lummi in a consolation match at 9 a.m. today. The Eagles would have to win two matches today to reach the trophy round.
“We tried to play it safe and not make mistakes while waiting for the other team to make errors,” TRC coach Jaymie Cox said. “We should’ve worked harder at taking control of the match. We had the mentality of playing not to lose instead of playing to win.”
In the second game, the Eagles led 13-10 and later tied it 24-24 and 27-27 before the Vandals claimed victory.
Mariah Morrison led TRC with 12 kills, and Myriah Dombrowsky had 15 assists, three kills and six digs. Catherine Maldonado had seven digs and served three aces, Nikki Barnwell had four kills and two aces, and Lane Backstrom chipped in four kills.
FOOTBALL
Tacoma Baptist knocks off Naselle
TACOMA — Tacoma Baptist exploded for four unanswered touchdowns in the second half and pulled away for a 42-8 victory over 10th-ranked Naselle at Curtis High School on Friday in a Class 2B state playoff game.
The fourth-ranked Crusaders (11-0) will take on Willapa Valley or Concrete next weekend in the quarterfinals.
Naselle, one year removed from a history-making run to the state semifinals, finished 9-2. But penalties, turnovers, mental mistakes — and stout resistance from TB’s linemen — ended the Comets’ journey.
“The main thing was that Tacoma Baptist’s offensive and defensive lines played more physical than we did, and you gotta give them credit for that,” Naselle coach Jeff Eaton said. “We made lots of mental mistakes that we hadn’t been making early in the game. We had seven penalties, which is probably more than we had in any three games this year. There were a lot of little things that didn’t help us get going.”
Naselle trailed just 7-0 with five seconds left in the first half, but TB quarterback Griffin Lowe threw a 20-yard touchdown pass at the halftime horn.
The Comets received the second-half kickoff and marched in for a score and conversion that made it 14-8, with Alan Erickson’s 4-yard touchdown jaunt and Logan Scrabeck’s two-point run pulling Naselle within six points.
But the Comets lost two of their three fumbles and threw an interception, and the Crusaders scored 28 straight points to put the game away.
Scrabeck had 44 yards rushing 10 carries and Austin Burkhalter threw for 50 yards.
Erickson, Burkhalter and Seth Scrabeck were defensive standouts.
Seniors Erickson, Burkhalter, Logan Scrabeck, Cody Larson, Carson Cooper, John Hines, Jesus Martinez, Marcos Herrera, Nathan Carlson, and Manny Lopez played their final games as Comets on Friday. The seniors did not have a losing record in any of their four seasons at Naselle, finishing with a 31-14 career record.
“We overcame some obstacles and had a good year,” Eaton said. “In a week or so, I will look back and be happy. Not so much at the moment.”
