TACOMA — Lummi coach Jim Sandusky insists he's still getting used to winning by running the football. Don't look now, but the Blackhawks are running all the way to Class 1B state championship game.
Ty Jameson rushed for three touchdowns and Eddy Williams added two more as Lummi hammered Neah Bay 64-36 in the Class 1B state semifinals on Friday at the Tacoma Dome. The Blackhawks ran out to a 21-0 lead behind some electric scampers by Williams and Kyle Finkbonner and the offensive line did the rest.
It's the first trip to the state finals for Lummi since 2006 and the second in school history. The Blackhawks meet Tri-Cities Prep in the championship at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, at the Tacoma Dome.
"Eddy ran hard, Kyle ran hard, they both got us the yards that we needed," Sandusky said. "We didn't throw the ball like we usually do, but that doesn't mean we can't. For me as a coach, I come from a background of throwing the ball, so I've just had to sit back and go with what works. And we've got some really good athletes who can run the ball."
It took Williams two plays to give Lummi an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter. The junior running back lined up at quarterback and burst around the end for a 41-yard run on the Blackhawks' first play from scrimmage. On the next play, he powered into the end zone from 2-yards out.
Finkbonner pushed the Blackhawks lead to 14-0 on their next possession, capping a five-play, 45-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Jameson made it 21-0 with just under four minutes to play in the first with a galloping 23-yard score.
It was pretty obvious from the start that Friday's outcome was going to be different from the previous two losses Neah Bay (12-1) handed Lummi (10-3) during the regular season.
"Getting that lead early really helped us," Jameson said. "We had a really good week of practice — we all worked hard. But going up 21-0 really gave us a lot of confidence."
Still, the Red Devils did their best to scratch their way back into the game. Evan Bowechop closed the first quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run to pull Neah Bay within 21-6. Two more touchdowns by Robert Moss, including a 58-yard recepetion as time ran out in the first half, made it 35-20 at the half.
"I told them during my pregame speech that anything could happen," Sandusky said. "We could get up by three touchdown or be down by three touchdowns, but we had to keep fighting. A big lead didn't matter. This is too quick a game. We just had to keep pouring it on."
The Blackhawks took Sandusky's speech to heart in the second half, scoring quickly on a 40-yard run by Williams to make it 41-20. Jameson's second score of the game came at the end of the third quarter to give the Blackhawks a 48-20 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Neah Bay had one last rally though. Moss breathed life into the Red Devils surge by falling on a loose ball in the end zone following a fake punt attempt by the Blackhawks on their own 5-yard line with just under six minutes to play. That made it 48-28 until Jameson scored his third touchdown of the game, this on a 6-yard run, to push the lead back to 56-28.
Neah Bay quarterback Drexler Doherty caught a tipped pass two minutes later and raced 51-yards for a score to once again make a 20-point game. Lummi's Eric Robinson put an end to any comeback bid by returning Neah Bay's onside kick attempt 53 yards with 53 second left in the game for his second touchdown of the contest.
When the clock ran out the Blackhawks raced on the field with their helmets raised, tossing footballs in the air and cheering wildly.
"I was real unsure about how things were going to unfold," Sandusky said. "I thought we had a real solid game plan and the guys really responded well. We kept watching the film on Neah Bay and I kept telling my guys that we could beat them. They beat us twice, but the second time it was close, and I really liked our matchups. We were a little deeper, and I just really thought we had the better team."
