Prep Notebook (Nov. 17): Rockets' Tinney named Trico Offensive Player of the Year

Castle Rock’s Chris Tinney, who rushed for more than 1,100 yards while leading the Rockets to the postseason, was named the SWW 1A Trico Division football Offensive Player of the Year in a recent vote of the league’s coaches.

A pair of La Center players, Dillon Kelly and Derek VanSoest, were named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. Kelly was selected for his play as a running back/defensive back, and VanSoest as a linebacker.

White Salmon’s Larry McCutcheon was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

Tinney is a three-year starter for the Rockets, who finished second in the Trico behind La Center and lost in the district crossover playoffs to Toledo.

Other Rockets named to the league’s first team were offensive/defensive lineman Austin Althof, linebacker Zeke Lomer, and defensive backs Tinney and Brady Gardner.

Kalama running back/defensive back Sean McVicker, receiver/defensive lineman Jacob Neiman, punter Alex Hausserman and offensive lineman Daniel Oelke made the first unit, along with Ilwaco tight end Kyle Breckenridge.

Rounding out the first team were Stevenson quarterback Zach Castro, kicker Kevin Jaco, offensive lineman Wade Huett, receivers Andrew Olsen and Kyle Russell, defensive lineman Dylan Ohnemus, linebackers Brody Pestana and Josh Andersen, and defensive back Matt Rathgeber; White Salmon running back Jenson Ladiges and offensive lineman Joshua Bell; and La Center tight end Brody Hollingshead, offensive linemen VanSoest and Peter Hendrickson, defensive lineman Ryan Kulla and linebacker Seth Baxter.

Second-teamers included Castle Rock quarterback Brad Williamson and offensive lineman Taylor Harriman; Kalama offensive lineman Cody Sigle, defensive lineman Oelke and linebacker Nathan Wilfong; and Ilwaco running back Justin Short, offensive/defensive lineman Dylan Short and linebacker Tyler Starks.

Honorable mention selections featured Castle Rock tight end Wes Oja and defensive back Jean-Luc Allegar; Kalama running back Wilfong, defensive lineman Sigle, quarterback Ethan Oomittuk and defensive backs Steven Spaude and Cody Mazza; and Ilwaco running back Taylor Odneal and offensive lineman Sergio Nunez.

CR freshman Uhlenkott is Trico volleyball MVP

Castle Rock freshman Tierney Uhlenkott, who helped lead the Rockets to the SWW 1A Trico title, their second consecutive district crown and fourth straight state tournament appearance, has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Uhlenkott helped the Rockets to a fourth-place finish at the Class 1A state tournament last weekend.

Also named to the league’s first team were CR teammates Maddi Seidl and Macee Utecht; Kalama’s Maggi Aschoff, Haley Bellows and Sam Boatman; La Center’s Lauren Baker; and Carly Wright of Stevenson.

Second-team selections included CR’s Heather Beck, Ashley Moore and Megan Moore, Kalama’s Chelsea Rinard and Ilwaco’s Alexa Wirkkala. Honorable mention picks were CR’s Ellie Halladay and Charlie Hamilton, Kalama’s Halie Fewkes and Ilwaco’s Marin McDonnell.

Jeana Bayes of Castle Rock and La Center’s Heather Grotte shared Coaches of the Year honors.

Toledo’s Reich named to SWW 1A Evergreen team

Toledo senior Vanessa Reich was among six area athletes named to the SWW 1A Evergreen first team for volleyball after a recent vote of the league’s coaches.

Also on the league’s first unit are Montesano’s Tera Novy and Mackenzie McEvoy, Rochester’s Julie Marquez, Tenino’s Adelle Love and Kristen Schoenherr of Rainier, Wash.

Neither Toledo nor Winlock had any players on the second team, but honorable mention picks included Toledo’s Nicole Ewers, and Winlock’s Cassy Chickese and Sherelle Eichorst.

Onalaska’s Samantha Gordon was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, and Debbie Gibson of Montesano was the Coach of the Year.

Morgan, Kirkpatrick, Erickson are Wendy’s state finalists

R.A. Long’s Hannah Morgan, Scott Kirkpatrick of Mark Morris and Naselle’s Alan Erickson were among 20 student-athletes chosen as state finalists for the annual Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

School winners and state finalists were named at the end of October, with the state winners selected earlier this month. The 12 National Finalists will be chosen by Nov. 26, with the champion crowned on Dec. 11 in New York City as part of the collegiate Heisman Trophy presentation.

This year’s state winners are Aberdeen’s Taylor Sundstrom and Jarod Gunning of Davenport.

Also named state finalists were Onalaska’s Kalie Ritchey and Mikel Elliott of White Pass. Local nominees also included Porsche Yates of MM; RAL’s William Yordy; Castle Rock’s Dustin Hamilton and Taviah’ Jenkins; Kalama’s Jacob Misiak and Molly Campbell; Toutle Lake’s Kelsey Kent and Zachary Morain; Toledo’s Tiffany Tornow; and Naselle’s Emily Green.
