CHEHALIS — Freshman golfer Ross Kukula carded a final round of 75 to finish with even-par 142 for 36 holes to win the District 4 Class 1A Golf Championships held at the Riverside Golf Course on Friday.
Ilwaco won the team title with 138 points, followed by Montesano with 90 and La Center 31. Rochester and Stevenson had no golfers advance to the final day of competition.
Ilwaco’s Patrick Whealdon finished two strokes off the pace in second with rounds of 74-70 for 144, and Ryan Kukula carded rounds of 74-79 for 153 and third place.
The top-10 placers advance to the state tournament next spring. Ilwaco’s Clark Wilson carded 85-82 for 167 and seventh place, and Anthony Yoder had rounds of 82-86 for 168 and eighth place. Ryan Tapio missed the cut with rounds of 85-93 for 178 and 12th place.

MM, RAL players shine
Players from Mark Morris and R.A. Long will square off in the championship matches in singles and doubles after the first day of competition in the Class 2A subdistrict tennis championships at the Mint Valley Racquet Complex Friday.
RAL’s Jonathan Haukaas and Jeff Koss of MM will meet for the singles title, and the MM pairing of Evan Jones and Kelly Gilchrist plays RAL’s Tyler VonDracek and Nick Schoen for the doubles crown.
Haukaas won his opening match over a Washougal opponent 6-2, 6-2, and beat MM’s Tyler Stewart 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Koss opened with a 6-0, 6-3 win over RAL’s Jeffrey Ashford, and knocked off a Washougal player 6-0, 6-0 in the semis.
Stewart and Ashford remain alive in the consolation bracket. Stewart beat a Washougal player 7-5, 6-1 in his opening round match, and Ashford topped MM’s Kramer Rapp 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.
In doubles, the VonDracek-Schoen duo opened with a 7-6, 6-1 win over MM’s Ethan Winters and Chris London, and claimed their semifinal match over MM’s Ryan Dawkins and Jared Houten 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.
Jones and Gilchrist beat RAL’s Sean Sheppard and Anton Stalick 6-2, 6-0, and topped a Washougal duo in the semis 6-4, 6-1.
Dawkins-Houten won their first match over a Washougal pair 6-4, 6-2 and are alive in the consolation bracket, as are the pairing of RAL’s Levi Welch and Josh Johnson. The Welch-Johnson pairing lost their first match to Washougal, but bounced back to eliminate Sheppard and Stalick 6-2, 6-2.
Play concludes today. The top three singles and three doubles pairings advance to the District 4 Class 2A Tennis Championships during Oct. 23-24 in Lacey.
