Martinez returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for his first touchdown, and Scrabeck added an 8-yard scoring gallop later in the period for a 16-8 lead. Late turnovers too much for Hilanders to overcome
VANCOUVER — Kelso got a stellar performance from its defense, but too many mistakes on offense — including two fumbles and an interception in the final eight minutes — was its undoing in a 7-3 setback against Columbia River in nonleague football action Friday night.
“Our defense played well and put us in a position to win the game,” Hilanders coach Pat Hymes said. “We put pressure on their quarterback and did a good job with their running game. But you can’t make the mistakes we did in a close game and still expect to win.”
After a scoreless first half, Kelso (3-1) marched all the way to the Chieftains’ 10-yard line late in the third. After the drive stalled, Hymes sent placekicker onto the turf to boot a 27-yard field goal, and the freshman came through to give the Hilanders a 3-0 lead.
River (1-3), however, returned the favor with a touchdown drive to take a 7-3 advantage with 8:31 remaining.
Kelso fumbled the ball away on its next possession on a low pitch to tailback Lane Sari, but Sari got the ball back on the next play with an interception. With Sari and Jared O’Neil chewing up yards on the ground, the Hilanders traveled to the River 28-yard line with 1:46 remaining before senior quarterback Cameron Margaris threw a third-down interception.
Kelso got the ball back with under 30 seconds left, but fumbled again.
The Hilanders open Greater St. Helens 4A League play at Evergreen on Thursday.
