KALAMA — Sean McVicker rushed for 148 yards on 13 carries and Nathan Wilfong added 139 more on a dozen totes as Kalama had a huge night on the ground in a 41-6 thrashing of Tenino in nonleague football action Friday night at Chinook Stadium.

Kalama (2-1) rushed 44 times for a staggering 526 yards.

“I thought we made some positive strides and played much better than we have been,” Chinooks coach Mark Buchanan said. “And we’re going to build on that as we get closer to league starting.”

Kalama travels to Rainier to take on a Columbians team that fell 28-22 in overtime to Woodland on Friday.

The Chinooks led 7-0 after the first quarter when Jake Clizbe pounced on a fumble in the end zone as the Beavers’ quarterback lost the handle on a third-and-10 pass play at the 1-yard line.

Wilfong scored on a 1-yard run early in the second period, McVicker added a 38-yard TD and sophomore quarterback Ethan Oomittuk hit Jacob Nieman with a 16-yard touchdown toss with 20 seconds left in the half for a 29-0 advantage.

Wilfong added a 72-yard burst for another TD on Kalama’s first play of the third quarter. After Tenino ruined the shutout by returning a fumble 65 yards for a score in the fourth, McVicker returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to close out the scoring.

Oomittuk finished 4-of-9 passing for 55 yards, all in the first half. Buchanan said linebackers Austin Johnson, Clizbe and Wilfong played well defensively.

Tinney, Williamson pace Rockets to rout of Spuds

CASTLE ROCK — Chris Tinney ran for three touchdowns, and Brad Williamson threw for one and ran in another as Castle Rock crushed Ridgefield 41-7 in nonleague play on Friday.

Tinney carried the ball 12 times for 222 yards (18.5 yards per carry), and Williamson completed 12-of-19 passes for 266 yards.

CR (2-1) had a balanced offensive attack, rushing for 267 yards and passing for 266. The Rockets’ defense held Ridgefield to 184 total yards including 165 on the ground.

“It was a great team effort defensively,” CR coach Art Walsh said. “We wanted to get to the ball and tackle, and I thought we did a great job.”

Tinney scored on an 80-yard gallop, and Williamson tossed a 13 yard score to Brady Gardner as the Rockets led 13-0 after the first quarter. The CR lead swelled to 33-0 at halftime when Tinney, Colby Oster and Williamson scored on runs of 22, 1 and 3 yards, respectively. Tinney rounded out the scoring with a 66-yard scamper in the third period.

“We wanted to bounce back after last week, and the kids were ready to go and were excited,” Walsh said. “We played well throughout, and we had an opportunity to play a lot of younger guys in the second half.”

Williamson also picked off two passes and Tinney snagged one.

CR visits Adna on Friday.

Comets hang on to beat Ilwaco in final minutes

NASELLE — Freshman Kai Leach blocked a potential game-winning 21-yard field goal by Ilwaco with about two minutes remaining, and fifth-ranked Naselle ran out the clock to secure a 22-20 nonleague football win over the Fishermen on Friday night.

“I don’t like those kinds of games. Way too close for my liking,” joked Naselle coach Jeff Eaton. “Coach (Kevin) McNulty always puts in a new offense every time we play them. They had been running I-formation and some spread, and (Friday) they came out with a double wing. It took us a while to get used to it, but once we did, our defense did a good job.”

The Comets (3-0) took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by quarterback Austin Burkhalter and a 10-yard gallop by Logan Scrabeck. Burkhalter passed to John Hines for the two-point conversion on the second touchdown.

Ilwaco cut it to 14-7 at halftime on a pass play with under a minute left.

After the Fishermen narrowed the gap to 14-13 in the third quarter, but Jesus Martinez returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown to give the Comets a 22-13 advantage.

Ilwaco scored to make it 22-20 and, after taking over deep in Naselle territory, faced a fourth down at the 4-yard line. That’s when Leach swatted the field-goal attempt. He also had a blocked punt and recovered a fumble.

Scrabeck rushed 10 times for 66 yards to lead the Comets’ offense, which managed just 125 total yards against the Fishermen.

Defensive tackle Robert Eaton was in on 20 tackles for Naselle, Alan Erickson and Seth Scrabeck added 14 and 12 tackles, respectively, and Logan Scrabeck picked off a pass.

For the Fishermen (0-3), Justin Short connected with Kyle Breckenridge on a 29-yard TD in the second quarter, and Short hit Josh Berteaux on a 15-yarder in the third. Short scored their final TD on a 1-yard keeper.

“Defensively, I thought we did some good things,” McNulty said. “We played better. We gave them a short field with some mistakes we made, but overall I thought we were better.”

Top-ranked Monte uses big second half to rout Toledo

MONTESANO — Toledo played No. 1 Montesano tough in the first half, but the Bulldogs applied the pressure in the final two quarters and completed a 49-0 shutout in the SWW 1A Evergreen Division opener for both teams Friday night.

“We hurt ourselves by giving them a short field too many times,” Toledo coach Perry Herbst said. “We had three turnovers and all three were at inopportune times.”

The Indians (2-1, 0-1 league) trailed 20-0 at halftime.

Herbst praised the play of middle linebacker Preston Tomes, and his defensive line of Caleb Thomas, Dean Lampert Eric Due, Matt Deskins and Dylan Strom.

“We’re going to get healthier and we’re going to get better,” Herbst added.

Clatskanie commits four turnovers in loss to Culver

CULVER, Ore. — Clatskanie turned over the football four times and had a tough time getting its offense in gear, losing to defending Oregon 2A state runner-up Culver 26-6 in a nonleague matchup Friday night.

The Tigers (0-3) played hard and “had a better effort than we got the first two weeks,” head coach Tim Strong said.

“We were pretty sloppy with the four turnovers, but on the positive side, we did some nice things defensively and got a few stops inside the 5-yard line,” Strong said. “And our pass coverage is definitely improving.”

Jeron Cruz returned an interception 50 yards for Clatskanie’s only score. The Tigers trailed 13-6 at halftime, and the Bulldogs finished them off with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

Cruz was Clatskanie’s leading rusher with 65 yards on eight carries.

Strong said defensive end Brad White “had a heck of a game.”

It doesn’t get any easier next week for the Tigers, who travel to Knappa — the team that defeated Culver for last year’s 2A state crown.
