CENTRALIA — Emily Holt hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Woodland a 2-1 win over Hoquiam in the opening round of the Southwest 2A District fastpitch tournament at Fort Borst Park on Thursday.
Later in the day, Holt struck out 12 in a 1-0 victory over Centralia that clinched the Beavers’ first state tourney appearance since the early 1990s.
“We’re not exactly sure how long it has been right now, but it has been a while,” Woodland coach Damon Yeo said.
In the win over Hoquiam, Woodland trailed 1-0 in its final at-bat when Staci McClendon doubled for the Beavers. She was on third when Holt connected for her game-winning homer.
Holt also pitched a two-hitter.
Against Centralia, Holt pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam and another bases-loaded situation with one out. Third baseman Cami Pearson was a defensive standout.
Woodland plated its lone run in the first inning on an RBI single by Kelsey Haynes.
The Beavers take on W.F. West for the district title at 6 p.m. Friday at Fort Borst.
Jills still alive at district
CENTRALIA — After dropping an “ugly” 3-0, nine-inning decision to Tumwater in its Southwest 2A District fastpitch opener, R.A. Long rebounded to defeat Ridgefield 4-3 in eight innings Thursday at Fort Borst Park to remain in contention for a state berth.
The game against Tumwater was scoreless until the ninth, when a runner is placed at second under International Tiebreaker rules. Without the benefit of a hit, Tumwater pushed across two runs on a passed ball and an error on the toss back to pitcher Baily Harris, who was covering the plate.
Another unearned run made it 3-0.
Harris was the hard-luck losing pitcher, despite striking out 21 and allowing two hits.
“It was ugly,” RAL coach Jennifer Godinho said. “We had six people come up to bat in the fourth inning and had three hits, and didn’t score. If we’d gotten our bats going, we wouldn’t have been in that situation at the end.”
The game was marred by three appeals, which involved umpires bringing the rulebook and even a meeting with athletic directors. Twice the umpires’ initial rulings were overturned on protests by the Tumwater coach.
Kailah McGill went 2-for-4 as the Jills mustered five hits. They struck out 11 times.
Harris struck out eight and scattered three hits in the win over Ridgefield. Tara Haas ripped a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game 1-1, and with it still knotted 3-3 in the eighth, Averie Bogner walked, Kiana Mawae doubled and Harris singled home Bogner with the winning run.
Sadie Petersen had two hits with a double and scored twice for the Jills, and Harris added two hits and two RBIs.
RAL plays Centralia at 4 p.m. Friday for a state berth. The loser is eliminated.

The Tigers are tentative scheduled to host Dayton on Tuesday.
Hughes and Katherine Jolma each hit doubles. Kallunki struck out six and walked two.
Rockets, ’Nooks to clash
CENTRALIA — Castle Rock and Kalama each dropped games in the Southwest 1A District fastpitch tournament on Thursday at Fort Borst Park, and will face off against each other at 11 a.m. Saturday for a state berth.

Kayleigh Klingberg (3-for-4, three RBIs), Lacey Seidl (2-for-3, home run), Taviah’ Jenkins (2-for-3) and Samantha Moore (2-for-3) led the Rockets at the plate.

Kalama lost to Forks 7-1 in its first-round game, with Corie McDaniel going 3-for-3. Jordan Vossen doubled and knocked in a run.
The Chinooks stayed alive with a 5-1 victory over Ilwaco, with Blair Wells (five innings, two hits) pitching the win. Haley Bellows was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the way.
Toutle Lake goes 1-1
CENTRALIA — Toutle Lake whipped Ocosta 12-2, but dropped a 12-0 decision to Pe Ell in the Southwest 2B District fastpitch tournament on Thursday.

Mules win another crown
OCEAN SHORES — Cody Olsen finished second individual and Wahkiakum sent three other players to state in winning the Southwest 2B District boys golf title at Ocean Shores Golf Course on Thursday.
Olsen battled Northwest Christian’s Nick Maddox all day for the lead, but the Mules’ junior — trailing by two strokes — hit a ball 4 inches out of bounds on the par-5 17th hole, and ended up losing by five.
Olsen shot 83-85 for a 36-hole total of 168. Also advancing to next week’s state 2B tourney in the Tri-Cities were Cole Claussen (third, 174), Justin McClain (10th, 190) and Andrew Wieler (14th, 196). The top 16 qualified.
