WASHOUGAL — R.A. Long remained in contention for the league championship by blanking Washougal 14-0 in a GSHL 2A football game Friday night, despite a chaotic outing.

“It was kind of a crazy night,” RAL coach Erik Bertram said. “The ball was bouncing all over. Flags were flying. We had a hard time putting anything together.”

Three first-quarter turnovers stalled most of their early drives, but the Lumberjacks (6-1, 3-0 league) still managed to get ahead when William Yordy hit Gavin Johnson with a 17-yard pass. In the second quarter, Jerry Graham ran back an interception 30 yards for the Jacks’ second touchdown.

With the clock now firmly on its side, RAL’s defense began the job of waiting out the Panthers on a night when scoring did not come easily for either team. Austin Wegdahl picked off two passes, and Julio Bautista had two sacks. J Nusbaum blocked a punt.

“Defensive effort and special teams were really good,” Bertram said. “We’re happy with it.”

Yordy threw the ball 13 times and connected on eight for 107 yards, with two interceptions. Johnson had five catches for 70 yards. Thomas McCall was R.A. Long’s leading rusher with eight carries for 25 yards.

The victory moved Woodland to 5-2, 1-2 in league. Hockinson falls to 1-6 and 1-2.

“This was a hard-fought game by both teams,” Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf said. “Our kids played with a lot of motivation to get the job done.”

Engen, Harvey run wild as Tigers savage Loggers

CLATSKANIE — Storm Engen rushed for 133 yards on just six carries, and John Harvey added 110 more yards as Clatskanie blew out Vernonia 53-20 in a Lewis and Clark 3A League football game Friday.

“Defensively, the team played outstanding. Offensively, we were able to do whatever we wanted,” Clatskanie coach Tim Strong said.

The host Tigers penetrated Vernonia’s end zone four times in the first quarter. Cameron Carson threw touchdown passes to Harvey (45 yards) and Jason Childers (38). The Loggers then gave up a Jeran Cruz 24-yard TD and a Harvey 38-yarder.

The loss dropped TL to 3-4, 2-3 in league. Pe Ell improved to 3-4 and 2-3.
