SALEM — Eight members of Woodland’s Flanagan Clan Girls Track Club claimed top-3 finishes in their respective events at the USATF Region XIII Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, which concluded Sunday at Willamette University.
The top three placers in each event qualified for the National Junior Olympics which will be held July 27-Aug. 2 in Greensboro, N.C. Although eight members of the Flanagan Clan qualified for nationals, none of them will be advancing to the meet. The club will complete its season on Saturday and Sunday at the Track City International Classic held on Hayward Field in Eugene.
In the 15- 16-year-old division, Priscilla Timmons won the 1500 (4:50.64) and 3000 (10:35.05), and Anna Adamko set a Flanagan Clan record with a victory in the javelin (136-feet-6) and second in the discus (119-7). In the 17-18 division, Tamara Kulla was second in the 2000 steeplechase in 8:06.22.
Jessica Flanagan qualified for national in three events in the 11-12 division, winning the discus (69-8), placing second in the turbo-javelin (96-11) and third in the 6-pound shot put (28-8 1/2), and Shelby Vermeulen placed second in the discus at 65-9.
Vermeulen was also fifth in the 6-pound shot put (23-11 1/2) and seventh in the 80 hurdles (17.29); Merry Jouwsma was sixth in the discus (44-5) and eighth in the 6-pound shot put (20-5 3/4); Rachel Willson was fifth in the high jump (3-9 1/4), sixth in the long jump (12-9 1/2) and seventh in the 6-pound shot out (21-11 3/4); Judith Nunez was fifth in the long jump (12-11 1/2) and eighth in the 100 (14.61); and Hannah Arn grabbed eighth in the 1500 in 6:03.44.
In the 10-and-younger division, Christina Blackmon was second in the high jump (3-7 1/4), McKenna Flanagan was second in the turbo-javelin (59-7) and seventh in the high jump (2-11 1/2), and Stephanie Baker placed sixth in the high jump at 3-feet.
Among the 13-14 division placers, Sam Willson was third in the 200 hurdles (31.2), fourth in the triple jump (30-3 3/4) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.57); Kelsey Newburn finished fifth in the triple jump (29-5 1/2) and long jump (14-10), and seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.83) and 200 hurdles (33.05); and Amanda Bong was seventh in the javelin (65-8) and eighth in the discus (47-4).
In the boys events, Kalama’s Austin Johnson placed seventh in the javelin at 130-3, and was 10th in the 400 in 59.71.
BASEBALL
Red Lion advances to title game
BELLEVUE — Red Lion advanced to the title game of the annual Brandy Pugh Senior American Legion baseball tournament after victories over the Twin City Titans and Lakeside Recovery on Sunday at Bannerwood Park.
Red Lion crushed the Twin City Titans of Richland 15-1 in a 5-inning quarterfinal game, and topped Lakeside Recovery of Seattle 11-7 in a semifinal matchup. RI opened the tournament with a 6-1 victory over Vancouver Cardinals, dropped an 11-3 decision to the Kennewick Bandits, and bounced back to beat Bellevue Honda 9-1 before moving into the quarterfinals.
In the semifinal win over Lakeside Recovery, Mike Murray scattered 10 hits and struck out four through six innings, and Bryce Garbe pitched an inning of relief. Aaron Grenz had three of RI’s 11 hits, Chris Pierce chipped in a double and triple, Nolan Enriquez had two hits including a three-run double in the fourth inning, and Dane Cheatley had two hits including a double.
Drew Pettit scattered three hits and struck out nine batters, and RI plated eight runs in the first inning against the Twin City Titans in a game shortened to five innings for the 8-run mercy rule. Spencer Downs had three hits, and Chris Pierce chipped in a two-run triple.
In Saturday’s victory over Bellevue Honda that was called after five innings for the mercy rule, David Hull and Carl Johnson combined to pitch a 1-hitter. Garbe had three of RI’s 11 hits and knocked in two runs, and Pierce and Robby Sanders added two hits apiece. Sanders also knocked in two runs, and Downs added a two-run double in the fourth inning.
On Friday, the Kennewick Bandits pounded 12 hits and claimed victory after six innings via the mercy rule. The Bandits trailed 3-2 in the fifth inning when starting pitcher Garrett Crayne surrendered a two-run home run. Sanders had two hits including a triple and scored three times, and Enriquez had two hits.
Pierce scattered four hits, struck out four and walked four in a complete-game victory over the Vancouver Cardinals on Thursday. Downs had two hits with a triple, Grenz added two hits with a double, Enriquez belted a solo home run, Sanders had two hits and Evan Pickett chipped in two RBIs.
Cold Stone takes fifth
YAKIMA — Cody Erdman led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a bunt single and later scored the winning run on a base hit by Cole Clark as Cold Stone Creamery defeated Moscow, Idaho, 9-8 to capture fifth place at the Yakima Sun City baseball tournament on Sunday.
Cold Stone trailed 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, but clutch RBI singles from Nolan Burnett and Blake Giles helped tie it. Burnett finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Zac Williams was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Braydon Poole picked up his second win of the tournament with five innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out five. Poole was pitching on two days’ rest.
Poole, in addition to his two pitching victories, went 8-for-13 at the plate with seven RBIs in the tourney and was named to the all-tournament team.
Cold Stone finished 4-1 in the tourney.
On Saturday, Cold Stone dropped an 11-9 decision to West Valley of Yakima in the semifinals after blowing a three-run lead. Clark had a grand slam home run, Jake Look was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, and Poole was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Cold Stone finished in a three-way tie in its pool at 3-1, but a tiebreaker dropped it into the fifth-place game instead of the championship.
Pacific Tech goes 2-2
OLYMPIA — Pacific Tech Construction rolled to victory over Central Kitsap and Sports Unlimited on Friday, but suffered setbacks to Centralia and North Thurston on Saturday in the Timberline Baseball Tournament.
Pacific Tech closed out the tournament on Saturday with a 9-4 loss to Centralia and a 12-2 drubbing to North Thurston. On Friday, Pacific Tech crushed Central Kitsap 13-2 and shutout Sports Unlimited 10-0.
Dylan Slunaker and James Gummel each hit RBI doubles against Centralia, and Zach Dyer added two hits. North Thurston plated six runs in the sixth in its victory over Pacific Tech, which ended after six innings for the 8-run mercy rule.
In the 5-inning win over Sports Unlimited, Jake McCoy pitched a two-hitter and struck out three. Tyler Williams added two hits with a double, knocked in two runs and scored twice, Sean McVicker had two hits and scored three runs, Matt Parker had two hits with a double, scored twice and had two RBIs, and Gavin Johnson and Dyer had two hits each.
In the tournament opener against Central Kitsap, Pacific Tech trailed 2-0 in the first innings, but rallied to score eight runs in the fifth inning with no out to end the game via the mercy rule.
Cam Margaris pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven, and helped himself at the plate with two hits, scored twice and stole two bases. Parker added a double, triple and five RBIs, Slunaker had two hits and scored twice, and McVicker chipped in two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
