A combined 10 swimmers and three alternates from Kelso and Mark Morris will be splashing for state supremacy at the Class 4A and 2A state swimming meets Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
On Friday, swimmers from Mark Morris will compete in the 2A preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by the 4A prelims — featuring Kelso — at 5:45 p.m. Competition continues Saturday with the 2A finals at 10:15 a.m., followed by the 4A finals at 5:45 p.m.
At the Southwest 2A District meet last weekend at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Abigail Groffmann of the Monarchs qualified for state in the 100 backstroke with a second-place finish, and teamed with Brittany Jewett, Sarah Naglich and Janae Miller to qualify in the 200 freestyle relay.
Relay alternates are Mikayla Bell, Margaret Westervelt, Alissa Walker and Kelly Hill.
Miller also qualified for state in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle after swimming state-qualifying times during two regular-season meets and again at district.
In addition, two MM individuals and a relay team advanced to state as wild-card entries from the district meet. Wild-cards are chosen to complete preliminary heats at state from the fastest non state-qualifying times at district meets across the state.
Tasha Shero will compete in the 200 individual medley, Hill will be in the 100 butterfly, and the 400 free relay of Groffmann, Jewett, Shero and Miller advanced via the wild-card. Relay alternates are Sarah Naglich, Hill, Walker and Bell.
Kelso had three individuals and a relay team qualify for the 4A state meet after finishing first or second in the district championships last weekend in Vancouver.
Idil Ozer will compete in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, Jessica Patterson will be in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Shelby Metzger will compete in the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle, and the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays feature the foursome of Patterson, Ozer, Metzger and Hannah Proctor.
The 200 medley relay won the district meet in a school-record 1:59.64, breaking their own mark established earlier in the year at 2:00.77.
