KALAMA — White Salmon brought its bats to Kalama for a SWW 1A Trico Division baseball doubleheader Tuesday, but might has well have left them on the bus.
Nick LaRoy threw a five-inning no-hitter in the Chinooks’ 13-0, Game 1 romp, and Walker pitched all seven frames without allowing a hit in a 5-0 Kalama victory in the nightcap.
“Both guys came ready to pitch,” Chinooks coach Len Hiatt Jr. said. “They really got ahead in counts.”
LaRoy had 12 strikeouts and took a perfect game into the fifth inning before issuing a pair of walks.
Walker tallied 10 strikeouts.
In the first game, LaRoy and Robbie Neal (two doubles) each went 2-for-3, and Dylan Slunaker was 2-for-2.
LaRoy was 3-for-4 and Robby Sanders 2-for-4 in Game 2.
The third-ranked Chinooks (9-1, 5-0 league) visit White Salmon on Friday.
Middleton has himself a day
Brandon Middleton smashed two home runs, including a three-run shot in Kelso’s four-run fifth inning, as the Hilanders blanked Battle Ground 8-0 in a Greater St. Helens 4A League baseball game Tuesday at Stan Rister Stadium.
Leading 3-0 entering the fifth, Nolan Enriquez and Evan Pickett each drew one-out walks, and Middleton followed with his homer to make it 6-0. Cody O’Neill made it back-to-back blasts with a solo homer for a 7-0 advantage.
David Hull and Garrett McCoy combined on the shutout, with Hull allowing four hits and whiffing three in six innings of work, and McCoy tossing a scoreless seventh in his first varsity mound appearance.
Middleton added a double to go along with his two homers and drove in five runs. Garett Crayne added two hits for the Hilanders (7-1, 4-1 league).
Rockets cage Wildcats
CASTLE ROCK — Castle Rock pounded out 26 hits and beat La Center by identical 12-4 scores in an SWW 1A Trico Division baseball doubleheader on Tuesday.
The second game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.
The fourth-ranked Rockets (9-0, 5-0 league) also had 12 hits in a 13-8 victory over White Salmon here Friday.
In Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader, Travis Johnston had eight strikeouts in a 4 2/3-inning stint to book the win. Joey Howard pitched hitless relief over the final two panels.
Bryce Garbe was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, Steven Horsley was 2-for-4 and Mike Murray 2-for-5 with two doubles for CR, which broke a 3-3 tie by scoring nine runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Matt Parker worked 3 1/3 innings to earn the win in Game 2, with Dustin Hamilton supplying 2 2/3 innings of relief to wrap it up. Kyle Karnofski (3-for-4, three runs scored), Garbe (2-for-2, double, two runs scored), Horsley (3-for-4), Zack Gehring (2-for-4) and Johnston (1-for-2, two runs scored) paced the offense.
On Friday against White Salmon, the Rockets rallied for four runs in the bottom of the first inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit.
Garbe scattered seven hits and had four strikeouts in a four-inning stint that earned the victory. Mike Sullivan (one inning) and Joey Howard (two innings) were sturdy in relief.
Murray (3-for-5, double, four runs scored), Gehring (2-for-3, two runs scored) and Hamilton (3-for-5, double) starred at the plate.
SOFTBALL
‘No-no’ Nyman strikes again
CAMAS — Crystal Nyman blazed through the Camas lineup for her first seven-inning no-hitter of the season in Kelso’s 2-0 victory here Tuesday in a nonleague fastpitch game.
Nyman, a right-handed pitcher headed to Temple University in the fall, struck out 16 Papermakers.
Karina Paavola gave Kelso (8-1) the lead with an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Jenna DeRosier knocked home a run with her second double of the game in the seventh.
Brittany Sanders went 2-for-4, Tailer Snow had a double, and Paavola and Mackenzie Southard each went 1-for-2 for the Lassies.
Kelso wraps up its nonleague schedule when it hosts Union on Wednesday.
Rock rolls last La Center
CASTLE ROCK — Danielle Nevers booked both wins in the pitching circle, and Castle Rock smacked three triples in the opener as it swept La Center 11-0 and 9-1 in the SWW 1A Trico Division fastpitch openers for both teams on Tuesday.
The first game ended after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Nevers pitched four innings in Game 1, allowing three hits and no walks before freshman Brittney Keeling closed the door on the Wildcats in the fifth. Catcher Samantha Moore played well defensively and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a triple, while Ashley Moore (2-for-3, RBI, triple) and Lacey Seidl (leadoff triple in first inning) also hit well.
Defensively, Lindsay Melton (shortstop) and Kayleigh Klingberg (first base) were standouts.
In Game 2, Nevers scattered three hits and struck out four in four innings, and freshman Regan Smith tossed the final three frames.
Klingberg (1-for-3, two RBIs), Melton (double, RBI) and freshman Miranda Meredith (1-for-2, two RBIs) were the top hitters. Meredith (third base), Seidl (shortstop), Maddie Klingberg (catcher), Taviah’ Jenkins (outfield) and Ashley Moore (outfield) were defensive standouts for the Rockets (4-1, 2-0 league), who play La Center on Thursday.
’Nooks bring out the sticks
KALAMA — Corie McDaniel belted a grand slam home run and Haley Bellows added a three-run homer in Kalama’s 15-5, five-inning win over White Salmon in the first game of an SWW 1A Trico Division twinbill on Tuesday.
The Chinooks also won the nightcap, 11-0 in five innings.
In Game 1, Samantha Boatman was 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Bellows finished 4-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and her three-run shot. McDaniel finished 2-for-3 with a double, six RBIs and her grand slam in the fourth inning.
Megan Sutherby also was 2-for-3 with RBI as Kalama finished with 14 hits. Blair Wells pitched all five frames with three strikeouts and six hits allowed. Bellows (shortstop) and McDaniel (first base) were defensive standouts.
In the second game, Bellows (2-for-3, double, RBI), McDaniel (2-for-4, four RBIs), Jordan Vossen (2-for-4, double, four RBIs) and BreAnn Hanley (2-for-3, double) led Kalama’s 11-hit attack.
“We hit the ball hard in both games — really hard,” Kalama coach Mark Rea said.
McDaniel pitched five innings for the win, with four hits allowed and seven whiffs. Vossen (catcher) and Sutherby (second base) played well defensively for the Chinooks (4-3, 2-0 league), who play at White Salmon on Friday.
SOCCER
Panthers pull away for win
WOODLAND — Washougal scored on a penalty kick 20 minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie, and went on to defeat Woodland 2-0 in a Greater St. Helens 2A League boys soccer match Tuesday.
Jose Herrera played well in goal for Woodland, and head coach Jeff Flanagan said Junior Martinez “created opportunities” for the Beavers. Joey Zabaleta played a solid all-around game and multiple positions.
Washougal put the game away with an insurance goal in the final minutes.
Hilanders suffer road loss
VANCOUVER — Kelso trimmed a two-goal deficit in half with a tally by Andrew Loeb midway through the second half, but couldn’t complete the rally and fell to Heritage 3-1 in a Greater St. Helens 4A League boys soccer match at McKenzie Stadium on Tuesday.
Heritage led 1-0 at halftime and scored again five minutes into the second half. Later in the period, Loeb was “in the right place at the right time,” according to Kelso coach John Fromdahl, and guided in a long throw-in from Julian Olivas to make it 2-1.
Jeremy Hess (midfield) also played well for the Hilanders (0-3 league).
TENNIS
Beaver netters top CR
TENINO — Ainsley Uhlenkott won in straight sets in No. 1 singles for Castle Rock, but Tenino dominated the rest of the matches as the Beavers topped the Rockets 4-1 in an SWW 1A girls tennis match Tuesday.
Uhlenkott prevailed 6-2, 6-1, and Carlee Dowell also played well in defeat for the Rockets.
GOLF
Jills cruise by Ridgefield
Kamri Tapani fired a 44 to earn medalist honors and help R.A. Long dominate a young Ridgefield squad 244-387 at Mint Valley Golf Course on Tuesday in a Greater St. Helens 2A League golf match.
Desi Tapani carded a 48 and Makenzi Ellis a 49 for the Jills (2-0 league), who have a key match against Woodland at Lewis River Golf Course on Thursday.
Also for RAL, Katie Sarysz shot a 51 and Amber Byrum a 52.
Career days carry Kelso
Four Kelso golfers shot the lowest rounds of their careers, and the Lassies posted their lowest score of the season in beating Evergreen 197-222 at Three Rivers Golf Course on Tuesday in a Greater St. Helens 4A League match.
Medalist Stephanie Bernard led the roll-call of personal bests with a 42. Casey Birdsell (49), Lauren Froberg (53) and Hailey Koth (53) also shot career lows.
Kelso (5-2, 2-0 league) will compete at the Sandy Invitational at Resort at the Mountain on Thursday.
Jenks medals for MM
WASHOUGAL — Mary-Grace Jenks carded a medal round of 47 to lift Mark Morris to a 277-292 victory over Washougal in Greater St. Helens 2A League golf at Orchard Hills on Monday.
Rounding out the MM scorecard were Katie Ziegler and Shayanne DeCamp with rounds of 56, Natalie Johnsen with 58, and Morgan Mittie with 60.
Leno paces Rainier girls
Jessica Leno carded a round of 108 to lead Rainier in its girls golf match with Scappoose at Mint Valley on Monday.
No team scores were reported.
Also for Rainier, Mercedes Guisinger had a 145, Jewellee Stebbins carded 181, Kristi Crape had 187, Katie Pederson added 191, and Rachel Crume carded 199.
Dombrowsky sparks TRC
Myriah Dombrowsky fired a 59 to nab medalist honors as Three Rivers Christian topped Wahkiakum 189-273 (top three scores counted) in a nonleague girls golf match at Three Rivers Golf Course on Tuesday.
Wahkiakum is in its first year of golf and TRC in its second year.
Also for the Eagles, Lane Backstrom shot 62, Kayla Eicholte 68 and Cassey Halleck 73. For Wahkiakum, Sadie Mace had an 83, Lea Joell 93 and Lucy Bosch 97.
Beavers improve to 3-0
WOODLAND — Nicole Sallee shot a 44 to earn medalist honors for Woodland in an easy 262-339 win over Hockinson in a Greater St. Helens 2A League girls golf dual at Lewis River Golf Course on Tuesday.
Also for the Beavers (3-0 league), Alyssa Black and Breanna Wolf had 51s, and Ashley Vetter and Kayla Christenson shot 58s.
Woodland hosts R.A. Long at Lewis River on Thursday for the league lead.
Mules win four-way event
RAYMOND — Cole Claussen fired a 42 and Cody Olsen added a 43 as Wahkiakum finished in first place at a four-team boys golf match on Tuesday.
The Mules posted a team score of 179 to easily defeat Raymond (205), South Bend (214) and Willapa Valley (incomplete).
Chase Fritzie added a 46 for the Mules, followed by Andrew Weiler with 48 and Justin McClain with 50.
Last Thursday, Weiler carded a 41 to lift Wahkiakum to a 183-228 win over Adna at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis. Olsen added a 46, Claussen and McClain added 48s, and Ryan Helms shot 49.
The Mules host Three Rivers Christian on Thursday at Skyline Golf Course.
TRACK
MM, Woodland split dual
Nathan Gatts sprinted to victory in the 200 and anchored two winnings relays for Mark Morris in a 78-66 victory over Woodland in a Greater St. Helens 2A League dual track meet Tuesday at MM.
On the girls’ side, Woodland escaped with a narrow 77-72 victory by taking the 400 relay.
Gatts claimed the 200 in a time of 24.1. Other winners for the Monarchs were Chris Reeves in the high hurdles (16.30), Nate Starr in the 1600 (5:05.4), Andres Boyko in the 400 (58.2), Nate Wilson in the 300 hurdles (43.05), Chase Bussing in the 800 (2:04.4), Roberto Rodriguez in the 3200 (11:00), Ron Anagnostou in the pole vault (10-0), and the 400 (45.6) and 1600 (3:44.9) relays (names unavailable).
For Woodland, Jordan Shaw won the 100 (11.7), the long jump (20-7) and the triple jump (20-7). Tyler King won the high jump (5-11), Tra Givens won the shot put (44-1 1/2), Evan Koering won the discus (142-9) and Morgan Glessing won the javelin (129-7).
The Woodland girls were led by Charity Arn, who won the high jump (4-10), long jump (16-2) and pole vault (8-6). Mackenzie Ripp won the shot put (33-2), Alex Coons won the 200 (27.5), Megan Quintrell the javelin (110-1), and Michelle Kooiman the 400 (69.5).
The 400 relay squad of Coons, Kooiman, Lauren Davis and Sammi Sturdivan won in 51.7, and the 800 relay foursome of Coons, Davis, Kooiman and Mia Patterson prevailed in 1:55.7.
Sydney Brusewitz and Kasey Moore posted double wins for the Monarch girls, with Brusewitz taking the 1600 (5:49.16) and 800 (2:42.4), and Moore the 100 hurdles (17.1) and 300 hurdles (54.49).
Also for MM, Erica Niemi (discus, 95-6 1/2), Nicole Feeney (3200, 12:55.3), Taylar Amburgey (triple jump, 30-6) and the 1600 relay (4:41.2, names unavailable) were winners.
Kelso boys tame Tigers
Adam Scalesse, Riley Davis, Junel Cervantes and Thomas Gustin each won a pair of events to help the Kelso boys to a 90-55 thrashing of Battle Ground in a Greater St. Helens 4A League dual meet Tuesday at Joe Stewart Track.
The Kelso girls dropped an 80-70 decision to the Tigers. Both Kelso squads are 3-1 in GSHL 4A duals this season.
Scalesse continued his torrid spring with wins in the 110 hurdles (14.77, matching PR) and 300 hurdles (39.31, second-best time). He also ran on the winning 400 relay (44.82) with Davis, Jared O’Neil and Cervantes.
Davis posted victories in the long jump (19-7) and triple jump (41.5 1/2), Cervantes in the sprints (100, 11.15 and 200, 23.35), and Gustin took the shot put (48-7) and discus (145-10).
Other winners for the Hilanders were Nolan Mayther (javelin, 145-2), Bryce Davis (3200, 10:23) and Jonathan Wishard (pole vault, 13-0). Seniors Michael Patterson and Brian Bach also turned in solid performances for the day, Kelso coach Joe Krieder said.
Kayla Davis and Emma Destromp were standouts for the Lassies, with Davis winning the high jump (4-10) and long jump (16-2 1/2), and Destromp the 100 (12.98) and triple jump (33-7 3/4).
Destromp anchored Kelso’s winning 1600 relay (4:19), with Cassy Teig, Katie Reichert and Teresa Padilla. Kelly Swanson also claimed a victory in the 3200 (12:20).

Kelso 13, Battle Ground 1 — Justin Sanders tossed a complete game for the Hilanders, allowing three hits. Cameron Margaris (three hits, four RBIs, home run), Gage Townsend (three hits) and Cam Christiansen (three hits) led the way at the plate.
Castle Rock 10-11, La Center 0-4 — In the first game, Tad Catlin threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts. Zach Dyer (3-for-3, three RBIs) and Dalton Gonzalez (two-run single) powered the offense. In Game 2, Kyle Godinho pitched the win. Tim Bazlier was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Layton Hurley was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Jean-Luc Allegar was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Softball
Castle Rock 13-17, La Center 3-0 — In Game 1, Kirsty Adamson was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, Katie Caulfield had two hits and two runs scored, Jennifer Clement pitched the win, and Laken Ehrhorn and Jasmine Mercer were defensive standouts. In the second game, Mercer had a double, triple and two runs scored, Breanne Krone had two hits and two runs scored, and Ehrhorn pitched the victory with eight strikeouts. Bekka Grendahl was a defensive standout.
