It’s not that Shawn Perkins is a showoff. The Mark Morris head coach just happens to favor an offensive scheme that flaunts the Monarchs’ greatest asset.
Up to four potential ballcarriers are on the field at any given time in the Wing-T. The Monarchs this season are deeper than they’ve ever been at running back during Perkins’ seven-year tenure. Working behind a talented, veteran offensive line, Braydon Poole, Colton Carpenter, Nathan Wilson. Travis Kinder, Jeremy Wolf and Dan Feeney have given MM one of the top rushing attacks in the state.
The six have combined for 3,271 yards and 43 touchdowns.
Each has a different running style, without being one-dimensional.
"Everyone has a chance to be successful in our offense," said Perkins. "Our kids aren’t selfish and lots of people get touches. You may not end up with huge individual numbers, but our guys understand that wins are more important than personal glory."
MM’s six-headed rushing monster will take on its biggest challenge of the season Friday night in Kennewick, when the seventh-ranked Monarchs (10-1) look to upset top-ranked Ellensburg (11-0) in a Class 2A state quarterfinal at 7 p.m.
Here is a look at MM’s versatile stable of running backs:
Colton Carpenter
Height/weight: 6-1, 200
Year: Senior
Jersey No.: 23
Position: Fullback/Wingback
Yards: 418
Touchdowns: 8
• Carpenter on Carpenter: "My goal is not to be stopped at the line. If a big play comes, I’ll take it, but I’m all about grinding it down."
• Kinder on Carpenter: "Really disciplined. The best blocking back we have and he hits the hole really hard. He’s not the fastest of the wings, but he gets the job done no matter what. Very patient when he is running inside."
• Perkins on Carpenter: "Very effective between the tackles. Blocks well, catches well and his best runs always come when he is getting the tough yards. Mr. Utility."
• Feeney on Carpenter: "That’s one strong guy. Fast. Quick. Good at following blocks, but not afraid to run you over, either. Has great balance and is quick on his feet."
Braydon Poole
Height/weight: 6-1, 202
Year: Senior
Jersey No.: 30
Position: Fullback
Yards: 561
Touchdowns: 3
• Poole on Poole: "I wish I was faster, but I make the most of what I have. I think I make up for it with little cuts and reading my blocks. Thankfully, we’ve got great linemen and our backs block well, too."
• Perkins on Poole: "He’s a plodder that gets the tough yards. Runs hard, understands when to make a cut, tough to bring down. A battering ram."
• Carpenter on Poole: "Really good at reading blocks. Slips through little creases like it’s nothing. Anything the line gives him, he takes advantage."
• Feeney on Poole: "Very shifty with his cuts, but he can also get down and lower his shoulder. You’re not going to tackle him one-on-one. He’s a power back. He runs hard."
Dan Feeney
Height/weight: 5-11, 216
Year: Junior
Jersey No.: 32
Position: Fullback
Yards: 548
Touchdowns: 8
• Feeney on Feeney: "I try to fight for every yard. I can make people miss if I have to, but the ‘running over’ part just comes easier to me. My role is to get short yardage and grind the clock out."
• Poole on Feeney: "He’s a beast. I don’t know if there is a guy around who can tackle him one-on-one."
• Wolf on Feeney: "Just a bulldozer. He puts his head down and goes. Finds the hole, then runs over anyone that gets in his way."
• Carpenter on Feeney: "Honestly, he is the toughest guy to tackle on our team. He has a thick body and quick little legs. He just bounces off people. You can’t tackle him with your arms."
Travis Kinder
Height/weight: 5-6, 157
Year: Senior
Jersey No.: 25
Position: Wingback
Yards: 396
Touchdowns: 5
• Kinder on Kinder: "Our team is very disciplined, and if everyone makes their blocks, no one should get a straight hit. I wait for the holes to open up, because the offensive line is going to open a big hole every time."
• Perkins on Kinder: "This is the perfect offense for him. Everything is based on misdirection, and he hides behind our linemen so well. A tough guy to bring down. Finishes his runs as well as anyone."
• Feeney on Kinder: "Crazy-legs Kinder. He’s shifty. He has a low center of gravity. He never stops. He has a big heart and sacrifices his body for the team."
• Poole on Kinder: "He’s so tough. He gets hit so hard and just pops right back up. For how small he is, he can really run people over and make guys miss."
Jeremy Wolf
Height/weight: 5-11, 164
Year: Junior
Jersey No.: 9
Position: Wingback
Yards: 855
Touchdowns: 13
• Wolf on Wolf: "I look for an opening, for where I can make the cut, find space and then run through it. I try to juke people and make them miss. If there’s no room, I put my head down and go."
• Kinder on Wolf: "He is really fast with the ball. Usually when a back gets the ball, it slows them down slightly. Not him. He can spin, juke and see holes."
• Feeney on Wolf: "He’s a stud. He’s an animal. He can burn you with his speed. He’s got some moves that will make you miss."
• Poole on Wolf: "A scrappy kid. Pound-for-pound, he might be our toughest kid. He’s fast and he is a true competitor."
Nathan Wilson
Height/weight: 6-1, 174
Year: Senior
Jersey No.: 33
Position: Wingback
Yards: 493
Touchdowns: 6
• Perkins on Wilson: "Probably the fastest guy on the team. He stretches defenses, can cut and is very strong, too. If he gets in the open field, he’ll leave you behind."
• Feeney on Wilson: "He’s a horse. Super fast. Perfect form. Probably the fastest guy on the team if he gets out in the open field."
• Kinder on Wilson: "Our fastest back and he is strong, too. He will break tackles."
• Carpenter on Wilson: "Freakishly fast. You can’t give that guy room to run. He’s gone if you do."
