Class 1A State Boys

Seattle Academy 56, Castle Rock 50 (OT)

YAKIMA — Kyle Terriere’s basket with 2 minutes left in overtime pushed Seattle Academy ahead to stay, and the Cardinals beat Castle Rock 56-50 in the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

Terriere’s basket snapped a 48-all tie with 2:01 to play. The Cardinals put the game away with six free throws.

Castle Rock, which led by 13 points midway through the second quarter, collapsed in the second half. SA started the third quarter with a 15-4 run that knotted the score at 25, and pushed ahead by eight points twice in the fourth quarter.

But CR’s Steven Horsley tied the score at 46 on a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation. SA’s last-second shot missed its mark.

Terriere and Patrick McMahon led the Cardinals (14-11) with 15 points each. Adrian Brandon added 14 and Rian Claxton 10.

Zack Gehring scored 18 points for the Rockets (17-6) and pulled down nine rebounds.

King’s 42, Kalama 23

YAKIMA — Ryan Hoff scored 13 points and Karl Clocksin added 10 as King’s raced past Kalama 42-23 in the first round of the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

The Knights (18-7) led the entire game, building a 23-point lead, 40-17, late in the contest. Nick Hardy grabbed five of the Knights’ 13 steals.

King’s shot 40 percent, compared to just 28 percent for the Chinooks (16-9).

Robby Sanders led Kalama with 11 points and seven rebounds, and teammate Ryan Chiodo also pulled down seven rebounds.

Brewster 55, Winlock 47

YAKIMA — Wade Gebbers and Eli Driessen combined for 30 second-half points as Brewster upended fifth-ranked Winlock 55-47 on Wednesday in the Class 1A boys state tournament.

Gebbers scored 13 of his team-high 20 points after halftime and Driessen scored 17 of his 19 in the second half when the Bears (22-5) used an eight-point run in the fourth quarter to pull ahead of the taller Cardinals (21-3).

Driessen hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Brewster the lead for good with 5:33 to play. Gebbers then made 10 free throws in the second half to secure the win. The Bears were 16 of 21 at the line. Jake Brown scored 22 points and Jordan Davis had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Bellevue Chrisitan 56, Highland 46

YAKIMA — Jeff Rerucha scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half, and Bellevue Christian pulled away for a 56-46 win over Highland in the opening game of the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

Rerucha was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, and scored his team’s final 10 points. BC was 19-for-23 from the line, including 14 of 16 in the second half.

Taylor Stack pushed BC ahead for good when his basket with 5:13 to play snapped a 38-38 tie.

David Downs chipped in 12 points for BC (18-6), and added two assists and three steals.

Patrick Newman led Highland (14-10) with 18 points, six rebounds and six steals. Teammates Joel Weise and Trent Fuller each added 11 points.

Vashon Island 54, Ilwaco 27

YAKIMA — John Gage scored 17 points and Thomas Timm-Skove added 15 as top-ranked Vashon cruised to a 54-27 opening-round win over Ilwaco in the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

The Pirates (23-1) jumped out to a 15-6 lead, including six points from Gage, and Ilwaco couldn’t get closer than six points the rest of the game. Gage pulled down 11 rebounds as the Pirates outrebounded Ilwaco 41-26.

Vashon shot just 32 percent (18 of 56), but Ilwaco was colder, making just 27 percent, including just 2 of 16 in the second half.

Karl Oman and Jack Whealdon led the Fishermen (16-10) with eight points each. Oman also had four rebounds.

Lake Roosevelt 61, Columbia (Burbank) 56

YAKIMA, Wash.  — Edward Wolfe scored 25 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Lake Roosevelt past Columbia of Burbank 61-56 on Wednesday in the Class 1A boys state tournament.

Wolfe made 7 of 11 shots in the second half, including all four 3-point tries. For the game, Wolfe made 8 of 19 field goals and was 4-for-7 on 3-pointers.

Cade Egbert chipped in 14 points and Tanner Loe added 10 for the Raiders (16-8), who led by 14 points late in the game until Burbank closed the margin at the end. Lake Roosevelt shot 61 percent in the second half.

Jordan Rada led Burbank (12-12) with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and teammate Nick Byrd added 20 points and seven rebounds. Rada also had three assists and two steals.

Chelan 61, Naches Valley 39

YAKIMA — Joe Harris made 10 of 14 shots and scored 32 points, leading fourth-ranked Chelan to a 61-39 win over Naches Valley on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 1A boys tournament.

Harris hit 5 of 9 3-pointers and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line as the Goats (23-4) pulled out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and were never threatened in the second half.

Aaron McQuaid added 12 points for Chelan, and Mat Engstrom pulled down seven rebounds. Harris had six rebounds, and added four assists, three blocked shots and three steals. The Goats shot nearly 50 percent and held the Rangers to just 33 percent shooting.

Justen Weigel led the Rangers (16-8) with eight points.

Class 1A State Girls

Connell 42, Chelan 24

YAKIMA — Debbie Molsbarger scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the second half to power Connell to a 42-24 victory over Chelan in the opening game of the Class 1A girls state tournament Wednesday.

Molsbarger made 5 of 13 shots, including 3 of 8 3-point attempts, for Connell (22-2), which led the entire game.

Eva Grassl pulled down nine rebounds for the Eagles, who dominated the boards 40-28.

Taylor McClennan led Chelan (20-6) with six points, and Jaicee Harris had six rebounds.

Onalaska 44, Vashon Island 36

YAKIMA — Amber Durand poured in a game-high 17 points as Onalaska bolted to a comfortable first-half lead and hung on for a 44-36 first-round victory over Vashon in the Class 1A girls state tournament Wednesday.

The Loggers (16-8) built a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter. Vashon pared the lead to 36-33 with 4:54 to play in the game but couldn’t get closer.

Mandy Reynoldson added nine points for Onalaska, and her layup with 4:16 to play in the first quarter put the Loggers ahead to stay.

Zelda Porter scored 12 points and Kelly Costello added 11 for the Pirates (17-6). But Vashon hurt its own cause with 20 turnovers.

Granger 54, Cascade (Leavenworth) 32

YAKIMA, Wash. — Samantha Zapien scored a game-high 14 points to lead Granger past Cascade 54-32 in the first round of the Class 1A girls state tournament on Wednesday.

The Spartans (20-4) raced to an early lead, thanks to 10 first-half points by Italia Mengarelli. Ashlee Reddout also scored eight of her 12 points in the first half.

Granger’s defense came up with nine steals and forced Cascade (18-9) into 18 turnovers. The Spartans converted those turnovers into 17 points.

Amber West led Cascade with six points. Leah Newell added five points and six rebounds.

Lynden Christian 59, Rainier 42

YAKIMA, Wash. — Kenzie De Boer scored 23 points to lead Lynden Christian to a 59-42 first-round victory over Rainier in the Class 1A girls state tournament Wednesday.

De Boer made 10 of 16 shots, as part of the Lyncs (22-3) hot shooting. LC shot nearly 55 percent, hitting 24 of 44 attempts.

Alisha Friberg added 15 points for LC, which took the lead for good midway through the second quarter. The Lyncs turned 17 Rainier turnovers into 27 points. De Boer finished with seven of her team’s 10 steals.

Kristen Schoenherr led Rainier (15-10) with 21 points, and Kate Simpson had seven rebounds.

Bellevue Christian 34, Columbia (Burbank) 20

YAKIMA — Michelle Teng led Bellevue Christian with 14 points, and the ninth-ranked Vikings rolled past Burbank 34-20 on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 1A girls state tournament.

Teng’s basket with 5:52 to play in the first half pushed the Vikings ahead to stay and sparked an 11-0 run that propelled BC to a 15-5 halftime lead. Burbank didn’t get closer than five points the rest of the game.

Terra Oldham added 12 points, four blocked shots, three steals and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Vikings (21-3).

Tiffany Idler led the Coyotes (15-9) with 11 points and Nicole Roberts snared 10 rebounds.

Freeman 66, LaCenter 30

YAKIMA — Megan McIntyre led three Freeman players in double figures with 15 points and the second-ranked Scotties routed LaCenter 66-30 on Wednesday in the Class 1A girls state tournament.

The Scotties (24-0) traded early leads with LaCenter before going on a 21-2 run that spanned the first and second quarters to take the lead for good.

Carley Heinen and Korina Baker each added 10 points for Freeman, which outshot LaCenter 44 percent (25 of 57) to 23 percent (11 of 47). The Scotties came up with 18 steals, including six from Lyndsey Ruland and four from Baker.

Lauren Baker led the Wildcats (14-6) with 14 points.

Zillah 45, King’s 27

YAKIMA — Bayli Ziegler and Rosebud Guthrie each scored 12 points as Zillah cruised past King’s 45-27 on Wednesday in the opening round of the Class 1A girls state tournament.

Alisi Uasike added 11 points for the Leopards (20-4), who took the lead for good with a 16-3 run in the second quarter that put them up 28-14 at the half. King’s never got closer.

Alison McConnaughey led King’s (11-15) with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Class 2B State Girls

Toutle Lake 48, Entiat 46

SPOKANE — Nichole Locke led Toutle Lake with 14 points and the Ducks scored five of the final six points to rally for a 48-46 win over Entiat in the first round of the Class 2B girls state tournament on Wednesday.

Entiat led 45-43 with 3:30 left, but the Ducks’ rallied. Payton Hoff’s basket pulled Toutle Lake even and Kelsey Kent’s free-throw broke the tie. Kent missed her second attempt but the Ducks’ grabbed the rebound and scored to go ahead by three.

Mandy Southard of Entiat was fouled attempting a 3-pointer but made just one free throw. Entiat had one last attempt, but a 3-pointer in the closing seconds missed.

Micaiah Hodge led the Tigers with 15.

White Pass 51, Orcas Island 24

SPOKANE — Mikel Elliott scored a game-high 20 points as White Pass beat Orcas Island 51-24 in the first round of the Class 2B state tournament on Wednesday.

Shaleesa Gillispie added 14 points for the Panthers (17-4), who broke the game open in the second quarter by outscoring the Vikings 22-5. The Panthers forced 21 turnovers and held Orcas Island to 14 percent shooting.

Orcas Island (8-10) was led by Sydney Harris with nine points. The Vikings struggled from the field, making 9 of 64 shots and didn’t score more than five points in any of the first three quarters.

Napavine 38, Lind-Ritzville 30

SPOKANE — Ali Brossard scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and helped Napavine hold off Lind-Ritzville’s furious fourth-quarter rally for a 38-30 win in the first round of the Class 2B girls state tournament.

L-R trailed 21-8 at halftime and 31-17 heading to the fourth quarter before Emmy Bouwman and Devon Killian led the Broncos’ rally. L-R pulled within six in the final seconds but could not get any closer.

Napavine took control with a 12-0 run to close the first half and also forced the Broncos into 34 turnovers.

Bouwman and Killian both finished with 10 points for L-R.

Liberty (Spangle) 46, Garfield-Palouse 41

SPOKANE — Kelly Hennessey scored a game-high 20 points as Liberty (Spangle) beat Garfield-Palouse 46-41 in the first round of the Class 2B state tournament on Wednesday.

Liberty trailed 33-27 after three quarters but Hennessey sparked a comeback by making two 3-pointers during a 19-8 run to close the game.

Taz Brooks added 10 points for the Lancers (12-9) who will play White Pass (17-4) in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Tianna Woltering scored 14 points and Elisha Lopez added 11 for Garfield-Palouse (14-7). The Vikings were hurt by their poor free-throw shooting down the stretch, making 5-of-15 for the game.

LaSalle 49, Evergreen Lutheran 35

SPOKANE — Melissa McCanna scored a game-high 12 points, and LaSalle made up for the loss of leading scorer Savannah Bonny in a 49-35 win over Evergreen Lutheran in the first round of the Class 2B girls state tournament on Wednesday.

Bonny was sidelined with an undisclosed injury less than a minute into the game. McCanna helped pick up the slack, and Stephanie Wytko also chipped in with 10 points.

Evergreen Lutheran saw forward Megume Poetter go down with a leg injury during the third quarter. Still, the Eagles closed within 10 with 2:23 left but LaSalle’s Julia Kennedy answered with a layup to squelch any chance of a comeback.

LaConner 31, Pomeroy 25

SPOKANE — Chelsey Allman scored seven points, and LaConner held-off a late charge by Pomeroy to win 31-25 in the first round of the Class 2B state tournament on Wednesday.

LaConner took control early, leading the Pirates 14-4 at halftime. Pomeroy climbed back into the game and trailed 28-25 with 1:41 but couldn’t get any closer.

Julie Hulbert and Kelsey Kennedy scored six points each, on 5-of-21 combined shooting, for the Braves (16-3). La Conner plays Napavine (21-0) on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Taelor Braun scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Pomeroy (15-6).
