Prep Notebook (June 4): MVP Nyman among four Lassies on GSHL 4A first team

Kelso pitcher Crystal Nyman, who was instrumental in the Lassies’ state Class 4A championship run last weekend, was named the Greater St. Helens 4A League Player of the Year in a recent vote of the league’s coaches.

Joining Nyman on the league’s first team were Kelso catcher Kelli Snyder, first baseman Tailer Snow and utility player Jenna DeRosier.

Also earning first-team nods were Mountain View pitcher Amanda Livingston, second baseman Jessica Guy, third baseman Paige Martin, designated hitter Kylee Gaspar and utility player Kelly Lowe; Battle Ground shortstop Maikala Galusha and outfielder Mechele Levi; Skyview outfielder Molly Evans; and Heritage outfielder Britney Sorenson.

Second-team picks included Kelso third baseman Brittney Sanders, outfielders Mackenzie Martin and Karina Paavola, and utility player Breanna Sanders.

Kelso’s Mike McMahon and Bob Van Horn of Mountain View shared Coach of the Year honors.

Nyman pitches, hits team to win in All-Star Challenge

Kelso’s Crystal Nyman led the Southwest team to a pair of victories in the seventh annual Senior All-Star Challenge Softball Tournament on Sunday at the Service Club Ball Fields in Kent.

In a 7-0 victory over the Eastern All-Stars, Nyman and Olympia’s Ally VanSchoorl combined to twirl a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The Southwest team finished with 13 hits, with Nyman collecting two and scoring a run.

Nyman scored the game-winning run as the Southwest slipped past the West-Central Stars 5-4 in the eight-inning championship game. She also drove in the first run of the game in the third inning, and picked up the victory after pitching four innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts.

Castle Rock’s Lacey Seidl also played for the Southwest team, knocking in a run in the fourth inning.

Kelso’s Armstead named GSHL 4A baseball MVP

Kelso pitcher Chris Armstead, who has already inked a letter of intent to play baseball at Lower Columbia College, has been named Most Valuable Player of the Greater St. Helens 4A League by the league’s coaches.

Joining Armstead on the first team are Kelso infielder Spencer Downs, outfielder Makaio Mobbs and utility player Brandon Middleton.

Also named to the first team were Heritage pitcher Jake Dahlberg, catcher Tyler Lundgren, first baseman Nick Coale, infielder Alex Foulon and outfielder Austin Hergert; Skyview pitcher Jeff Ames, first baseman Shawn Seally and designated hitter Matt Spears; Mountain View infielder Cameron Pape and outfielder Jeff Garmire; and Battle Ground infielder Kyle Osterhout.

Second-team picks included Kelso catcher Cody O’Neill, first baseman Evan Pickett, infielder Kelly Rice and outfielder Garett Crayne. Honorable mention selections featured Kelso’s David Hull.

Don Freeman of Heritage was named Coach of the Year.

Scalesse, Davis tabbed as top GSHL 4A track stars

Kelso’s Adam Scalesse and Riley Davis have been named Athletes of the Year in boys track for the Greater St. Helens 4A League.

Scalesse, who earned first-team honors in the 110 and 300 hurdles, joined Skyview sprinter Kevin Boyd (first-team in 100, 200, 400) as the league’s top track athletes. Davis, who earned first-team nods in the long jump and triple jump, joined Skyview high jumper Tyler Lane as the league’s top field athletes.

Also named to the league’s first team were Kelso’s Bryce Davis (3200); Skyview’s Casey Fields (shot put, javelin) and Chase Horrocks (1600); Steven Forgette (discus) and Jorge Torres (800) of Heritage; and Mountain View pole vaulter John Brenteson.

Second-team selections include Kelso’s Thomas Gustin (shot put, discus) and Jonathan Wishard (pole vault), and honorable mention picks included Kelso’s Junel Cervantes (200).

Skyview’s Nate Botnen was named the boys’ Coach of the Year.

In the girls’ events, Tee Tee Martin of Heritage (100, 200) and Skyview’s Priscilla Timmons (1600, 3200) were named the league’s Track Athletes of the Year, and Heritage’s Chawncy McClenan (long jump) was named the top field athlete.

Also named to the league’s first team were Mountain View’s Lynelle Decker (800), Maggie Pietka (triple jump), Christine Rice (high jump) and Annie Culverwell (pole vault); Battle Ground’s Gabi Dixson (shot put, discus), Rachel McDaniel (400), Whitney Swenson (100 hurdles) and Kayla Smith (javelin); and Mountain View’s Rachel McQuivey (300 hurdles).

Second-team picks included Kelso’s Paytyn Wheeler (200, 400), Katie Reichert (300 hurdles) and Kari Bonds (discus), and honorable mention selections included Emma Destromp (long jump) and Kayla Davis (high jump).

Battle Ground’s Kevin Donovan was the girls’ Coach of the Year.

Hilander midfielder Olivas named to GSHL first team

Kelso sophomore midfielder Julian Olivas earned first-team all-Greater St. Helens 4A League honors in boys soccer following a vote of the league’s coaches.

Also named to the first unit were Skyview forward Sean Chesebro, defenders Taylor Townsend and Zach Dodds, midfielder Triton Enghusen and goalkeeper Daniel Ervin; Heritage forward Tarik Subasic and defender Elliot Tolen; Evergreen forward Septi Danciu and defender Kyle Burmaster; Battle Ground midfielder Riku Wanzek; and Mountain View midfielder Jeff Garbarino.

Kelso’s Cameron Rupp was picked to the league’s second team, and Andrew Skreen received honorable mention honors.

Jake Perry of Skyview was selected the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, and Mountain View’s Kurt Stalsberg was the league’s top defensive player. Skyview’s Rob Owskey was named Coach of the Year.

Uhlich places 8th in javelin at state championships

Former local resident Natalee Uhlich, daughter of Longview’s Rich Uhlich, placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 116-6 at the Oregon Class 4A State Track Championships held at the University of Oregon.

Uhlich, a senior, was seeded 11th into the state finals after finishing second with a throw of 113-11 in the Cowapa District Championships held at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
