NWAACC Baseball Championships: Team-by-team breakdown

Here’s a capsule look at the eight teams competing in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Baseball Championships, beginning Thursday and continuing through Monday at David Story Field:

Lower Columbia Red Devils

Record: 35-6

Coach: Kelly Smith (15th season, 526-136)

Division, placing: Western, first

Coaches Poll: Second

Championship titles: Nine

Tournament appearances: 38 (most in conference history)

Team facts: Batting average, .320 (first); home runs, 16 (eighth); runs batted in, 308 (first); on-base percentage, .419 (second); earned run average, 1.87 (first); strikeouts, 317 (fifth); walks, 104 (fewest). Kelly Smith was named the division’s Coach of the Year after guiding LCC to a 24-1 record, including a 22-game winning streak to end the regular-season. LCC is ranked 12th in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Junior College Pacific Division poll. The Red Devils are seeking their 10th championship that would give them the most titles in conference history. LCC has appeared in the tournament’s championship game in seven of the past nine years. Of the 44 NWAACC Baseball Championships, LCC has missed playing in only five (the last one missed was 1985).

Top players: Eric Lane (sixth in batting average in conference at .408, 27 runs batted in, Western Division MVP, Gold Glove second baseman); Ben Grubb (.327, fifth in conference with five home runs, 10th-best in conference with 33 RBIs, Western Division first-team); Aaron Grenz (11th in batting average at .394, 28 RBIs, Western Division first-team); Cody Fassold (second in conference wins at 8-0, 1.17 earned run average, third in conference with 76 strikeouts, Western Division first-team); Nic Shadle (.367, 28 RBI, Western Division first-team, Gold Glove outfielder); Tim Culligan (seventh in conference win at 7-1, eighth in conference ERA at 0.86, Western Division second-team); Levi Dean (seventh in conference saves with four, 1.06 ERA, Western Division second-team); Chris Pierce (.348, 25 RBIs, Western Division second-team); Cody Garner (.367, two home runs, 25 RBIs, Western Division second-team); Nathan King (5-2, 2.31 ERA, Western Division second-team); Tyler Lichty (5-0, 2.24 ERA); Drew Pettit (1-0, 11th in conference ERA at 0.90); Michael Greene (4-3-1, 1.65 ERA); Aaron Smothers (.358, 16 RBIs); Jeremy Lorence (.328, 15 RBIs); Chaz Ocbina (.357, 13 RBIs).

Bellevue Bulldogs

Location: Bellevue, Wash.

Record: 24-19

Coach: Mark Yoshino (11th season)

Division, placing: Northern, fourth.

Coaches Poll: Seventh

Championship titles: Three (last one in 2007)

Tournament appearances: 32

Team facts: Batting average, .285 (10th); home runs, 10 (13th); runs batted in, 196 (13th); on-base percentage, .375 (11th); earned run average, 3.83 (12th); strikeouts, 315 (sixth); walks, 240 (25th). The Bulldogs beat division champ Skagit Valley (4-2) and Everett (10-1) in a playoff to claim the division’s top seed. Bellevue pitchers combined to lead the league in walks with 240, nearly 50 more than the next closest team.

Top players: Lucas Shaw (Second in conference home runs with seven, seventh in conference batting average at .405, 36 RBIs, Northern Division first-team); Ian Parmley (.304, Northern Division first-team); Cody Edwards (.348, 32 RBIs, Northern Division first-team); Bryan Barnes (.381, 28 RBIs, Northern Division first-team); Kirk Wetmore (3-2, 3.51 ERA, 10th in conference strikeouts with 70, Northern Division first-team); Brian Buckham (4-4, 3.70 ERA, Northern Division first-team); Michael Robertson (.348, 13 RBIs, Northern Division second-team); Ronnie Johnson (2-1, 1.37 ERA, seventh in conference saves at four, Northern Division second-team); Keegan Acker (.214, 11 RBIs, Gold Glove third baseman).

Clackamas Cougars

Location: Oregon City, Ore.

Record: 24-21

Coach: Robin Robinson (20th season)

Division, placing: Southern, second

Coaches Poll: 10th

Championship titles: None

Tournament appearances: Three (last one in 1996)

Team facts: Batting average, .290 (eighth); home runs, seven (19th); runs batted in, 197 (11th); on-base percentage, .365 (13th); earned run average, 2.37 (fourth); strikeouts, 342 (first); walks, 134 (eighth-fewest). The Cougars have never won a championship game, going 0-4 in their previous two tournament appearances. Clackamas avoided a division playoff when Linn-Benton and Lane split a doubleheader on the final day of the regular season. Last year, Clackamas finished a half-game out of second place to miss advancing to the postseason.

Christensen (.320, two home runs, 26 RBIs, Southern Division first-team, Gold Glove first baseman); Brendan Landwehr (.298, three home runs, 16 RBIs, Southern Division first-team, Gold Glove catcher); David Greenstein (.372, 30 RBIs, Southern Division first-team); Johnny Wade (.331, 15 RBIs, Southern Division second-team); Taylor Hill (3-2, 1.70 ERA, third in conference with six saves, Gold Glove pitcher); Casey Albright (2-1, 0.95 ERA, 12th in conference ERA); Jake Boyd (2-3, 2.17 ERA, two saves). Astoria’s Matt Brause has a 2-0 record with a 2.66 ERA.

Columbia Basin Hawks

Location: Pasco, Wash.

Record: 44-7

Coach: Steve Farrington (first season)

Division, placing: Eastern, first

Coaches Poll: Third

Championship titles: Two (last one in 2006)

Tournament appearances: 17

Team facts: Batting average, .304 (fourth); home runs, eight (17th); runs batted in, 259 (third); on-base percentage, .399 (sixth); earned run average, 2.58 (fifth); strikeouts, 336 (second); walks, 145 (12th). Beat Blue Mountain (11-4) and Treasure Valley (4-3 twice) in playoffs to claim the division’s top seed. The Hawks are ranked sixth in the latest ABCA poll. Farrington returns for his second foray as a head coach in the NWAACC after serving as an assistant coach at CBC under Scott Rogers last season. In his previous head coaching stint, Farrington amassed a 280-149-2 record while coaching Lower Columbia College to three NWAACC titles between 1983-94.

Top players: Zach Gallagher (9-0, 0.60 ERA, 73 strikeouts in 75 innings, first in the conference in victories, fourth in earned run average, seventh in strikeouts, Eastern Division MVP); Darrell Ceciliani (.387, four home runs, 39 RBIs, fourth in conference RBIs, Eastern Division first-team and Gold Glove outfielder); Phil Lininger (.317, 34 RBIs, eighth in conference RBIs, 0-0 record with two saves and 1.93 ERA, first-team Eastern Division); Elliott Van Gaver (8-1, 1.09 ERA, 71 strikeouts, second in conference wins, eighth in conference strikeouts, Eastern Division first-team); Phil Hymas (6-2, 2.56 ERA, Eastern Division first-team); Ezra Dickerson (.328, two home runs, 23 RBIs, Eastern Division first-team); Brady Farrington (.224, 14 RBIs, Gold Glove second baseman); Drew Goodman (.327, 20 RBIs, Eastern Division second-team); Thomas Henderson (.330, 14 RBIs, Eastern Division second-team); Jackson Evans (.309, two home runs, 20 RBIs, Eastern Division second-team); Davis Johnson (.374, 27 RBIs, Eastern Division second-team); Bryce Hjellum (3-1, 2.90, Eastern Division second-team); Jake Peden (6-0 0.83, seventh in conference ERA, Eastern Division second-team); Patrick Forgette (2-0 0.90, 10th in conference ERA).

Green River Gators

Location: Auburn, Wash.

Record: 28-14

Coach: Matt Acker (eighth season)

Division, placing: Western, second

Coaches Poll: Sixth

Championship titles: One (1975)

Tournament appearances: 21 (last time 2007)

Team facts: Batting average, .270 (14th); home runs, 22 (fifth); runs batted in, 208 (ninth); on-base percentage, .384 (ninth); earned run average, 5.18 (22nd); strikeouts, 271 (11th); walks, 129 (sixth-fewest). The Gators won a best-of-3 series with Tacoma to claim the division’s second berth into the tournament. Green River is ranked 19th in the latest ABCA poll.

Top players: Zack Gagnon (.322, conference-leading 43 RBIs, first-team Western Division); Zack Miller (1-1, 1.56 ERA, seven saves, second in conference saves, first-team Western Division); Aaron Johnson (.307, four home runs, 38 RBIs, sixth in conference RBIs, first-team Western Division); Cody Brooks (.397, 10th in conference batting average, first-team Western Division, Gold Glove shortstop); Kyle Baskett (.372, two home runs, 26 RBIs, first-team Western Division, Gold Glove outfielder); Jake Shadle (5-1, 2.12, first-team Western Division); David Macey (6-3, 1.76, first-team Western Division); Jesse Mayfield (.327, three home runs, 27 RBIs, second-team Western Division); Nathan O’Bryan (3-0, 3.05, Gold Glove pitcher).

Mount Hood Saints

Location: Gresham, Ore.

Record: 33-6

Coach: Bryan Donahoe (second season)

Division, placing: Southern, first

Coaches Poll: First

Championship titles: Three (last one in 2000)

Team facts: Batting average, .282 (11th); home runs, 21 (sixth); runs batted in, 184 (15th); on-base percentage, .391 (eighth); earned run average, 3.70 (eighth); strikeouts, 230 (16th); walks, 119 (second-fewest). Bryan Donahoe was named the Southern Division Coach of the Year. Since joining the NWAACC in 1984, Mount Hood has missed only two tournament appearances (1994, ‘99), and has placed in the top-4 in 14 postseason events, trailing only Lower Columbia (27), Yakima Valley (19) and Edmonds (18). The Saints are ranked ninth in the latest ABCA poll.

Top players: Taylor Ard (.483, 10 home runs, 40 RBIs, conference-leader in home runs, second in conference batting average, third in conference RBIs, Southern Division MVP); Eric Copenhagen (.388, 25 RBIs, Southern Division first-team, Gold Glove outfielder); Grant Glover (.379, three home runs, 22 RBIs, Southern Division first-team, Gold Glove third baseman); Kurt Snowley (.342, two home runs, 28 RBIs, Southern Division first-team, Gold Glove second baseman); Tanner Hodges (.319, three home runs, 23 RBIs, Southern Division first-team); Daniel Johnson (.317, five home runs, 22 RBIs, seventh in conference home runs, Southern Division first-team); Dylan Jones (.333, seven home runs, 19 RBIs, second in conference home runs, Southern Conference first-team, 5-2, 2.57, Southern Conference second-team); Corey Davis (.341, six home runs, 34 RBIs, fourth in conference home runs, Southern Division first-team); Nick Struck (8-0 1.10 ERA, second in conference wins, Southern Division first-team); Mike Cero (.319, three home runs, 19 RBIs, Southern Division second-team); John Kiggins (2-0, two saves, 1.27 ERA, Southern Division second-team); Nick Opitz (7-1 2.29 ERA, seventh in conference wins).

Skagit Valley Cardinals

Location: Mount Vernon, Wash.

Division, placing: Northern, first

Coaches Poll: Fourth

Team facts: Batting average, .299 (fifth); home runs, 25 (fourth); runs batted in, 236 (seventh); on-base percentage, .415 (third); earned run average, 3.93 (14th); strikeouts, 288 (eighth); walks, 153 (15th). Kevin Matthews was named the Northern Division Coach of the Year. The Cardinals took the second seed from the division after a playoff that included losses to Bellevue (4-2) and Everett (4-1), and a win over Edmonds (3-2). Skagit Valley, ranked third in the latest ABCA poll, is making its third consecutive tournament appearance and fourth in the last six years after making their postseason debut in 2004. The Cardinals reached last year’s title game, falling to Bellevue 3-0. The team tied a school record for victories after matching the mark from the 2006 and ‘07 campaigns. The school discontinued its baseball program in 1982 before reviving it in 2002.

Top players: Braden Tullis (8-1, 1.48 ERA, second in conference wins, Northern Division MVP, Gold Glove pitcher); Brady Locker (.361, four home runs, 21 RBIs, Northern Division first-team, Gold Glove outfielder); Brett Ferguson (0-1, four saves, 0.69 ERA, fifth in conference ERA, seventh in conference saves, Northern Division first-team); Alex Besaw (5-0, 3.11 ERA, Northern Division second-team); Tyrell Poggemeyer (7-1, 0.45 ERA, third in conference ERA, seventh in conference wins, Northern Division second-team); Andy Chriscaden (.371, six home runs, 29 RBIs, fourth in conference home runs, Northern Division second-team); Aaron Headrick (.278, two home runs, 23 RBIs, Northern Division second-team, Gold Glove shortstop); Tanner Leighton (.324, 18 RBIs, Northern Division second-team); Austin Potter (.340, 24 RBIs, Northern Division second-team); Travis Shreve (.282, 14 RBIs, Northern Division second-team); Grady Small (.319, two home runs, 16 RBIs, Northern Division second-team).

Treasure Valley Chukars

Location: Ontario, Ore.

Record: 26-25

Division, placing: Eastern, third

Coaches Poll: 12th

Tournament appearances: First

Team facts: Batting average, .289 (ninth); home runs, 26 (second); runs batted in, 268 (second); on-base percentage, .376 (10th); earned run average, 3.21 (seventh); strikeouts, 296 (seventh); walks, 151 (14th-fewest). Treasure Valley finished third in the division, but qualified for the tournament after winning two of four games in the division playoffs. TV beat Wenatchee Valley (2-1 and 7-0), but fell to Columbia Basin (4-3 and 4-3). The Chukars are making their first-ever tournament appearance since joining the conference in 2003. Prior to moving to the NWAACC, Treasure Valley won the Scenic West Conference in 1990 and ‘92.
