YAKIMA — Jade Haas had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, and Lower Columbia College rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to knock off Seattle 70-61 in the first round of the Yakima Valley women’s basketball tournament on Friday.

LCC (1-0) plays either Southwestern Oregon or host Yakima Valley in the tourney title game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“We came out listless and weren’t ready to go. I’m not sure why,” Lady Devils coach Chad Meadors said. “In the second half, we started trapping and made them play faster than they wanted. In the first half, we took some quick shots that didn’t fall, and played to their tempo.”

LCC trailed 35-28 at halftime, but four straight Seattle turnovers helped the Devils take the lead. Three consecutive 3-pointers by Brittany Welch, Mollee Schwegler and Sadie Salte with five minutes remaining put LCC ahead by five, and Seattle never led again.

Meadors said the defensive post play of 5-foot-7 freshman Lacey Seidl from Castle Rock helped turn it around for the Devils in the second half, and Haas took a key charge with two minutes left.

Schwegler and Salte added 12 points each for LCC, and Chardonnae Mortimer added six rebounds.

Saturday night’s game can be heard live on the Internet on the Yakima Valley College site (www.yvcc.edu/athletics).
