Ex-R.A. Long softball standout Baily Harris is already making an impact with the defending NCAA champion University of Washington softball team. Harris, a freshman pitcher, tossed a three-hitter in her first collegiate appearance as the Huskies beat Boise State 14-1 in the second game of a fall doubleheader at Carlon Park in Selah.
Rainier’s Chris Ware, a sophomore quarterback at Eastern Oregon University, was named the Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season following a 45-14 victory over Montana State-Northern.
Ware completed 32-of-46 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns. Also in the game, Wahkiakum’s Jeff McNally was a defensive standout for the Mountaineers when he intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards, had a fumble recovery, and made three solo tackles with three assists. He leads the Frontier Conference with three interceptions.
Naselle’s Sylvia Herrold is wearing out opposing defenses as an outside hitter with the Western Oregon University volleyball team.
Herrold, a sophomore, is second on the Wolves with 139 kills, including 15 in a 3-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene University, and 14 in a 3-1 triumph over Central Washington.
She’s ranked 16th in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 2.48 kills per game, 10th in conference hitting percentage at 25 percent, and 13th in points at 3.03 per game. In addition, she has 18 aces, which is second on the team and 13th in the conference at .32 per game.
R.A. Long graduate Amy Higginson, a junior setter at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, is second on the Crusaders with 281 assists, which ranks her fourth in the GNAC. She is fourth on the team with nine aces, and also has 28 kills and 101 digs.
Three former area standouts are playing and coaching volleyball at Warner Pacific College. Ex-R.A. Long standout Brianne Culbertson is a junior defensive specialist with 15 aces; former Castle Rock and Lower Columbia College player Emily Damschen is a junior outside hitter with 61 kills and six aces; and ex-Rainier player Tara Andrews is an assistant coach.
Another former RAL player, Alyssa Wistrick, is a junior with the Middle Tennessee State University volleyball team. Wistrick has 25 kills and 15 block assists, including six kills and five block assists in a 3-0 sweep of the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Kacie DeRosier, who formerly played at Kelso and Lower Columbia College, is a junior setter at Concordia University. DeRosier is second on the Cavaliers with 64 assists and also has 44 digs.
Castle Rock’s Emmy Dolan is a freshman middle blocker at Central Washington University, and Kalama’s Rashelle Davenport is an assistant coach at Corban College.
Ex-Mark Morris High soccer standout Corey Johnson, now a sophomore forward at The Evergreen State College, is second on the Geoducks with three goals.
Rainier’s Becca Roth is a senior forward/midfielder with the Pacific University women’s soccer team. Roth has scored one goal this season, a match-winner in the 74th minute of a 2-1 triumph over George Fox University.
Lisa Sari, who was a star with both Mark Morris and the University of Portland women’s soccer team, is now an assistant coach with the Pilots’ men’s and women’s soccer teams after completing her first season with the Los Angeles Sol of the Women’s Professional Soccer league.
Five former Kelso High cross country runners have found their way onto college rosters in Washington and Oregon. At Western Washington University, Greg Kubitz is a senior and Keever Henry is an assistant coach; Faisal Abdullahi is a sophomore at the University of Washington; and Michael Patterson and Bryce Davis are freshmen at the University of Portland and Western Oregon University, respectively.
Haley Brusewitz of Mark Morris is a freshman runner at Pacific University, and Woodland’s Travis Pengra is a sophomore at Warner Pacific College.
Former Mark Morris swimming standout Chase Mesford is listed as a sophomore on the crew team at Pacific Lutheran University.
