Bowling Notebook: Malakowsky named Bowler of the Year

For the second consecutive season, Travis Malakowsky packed home Bowler of the Year honors from the 25th annual Cowlitz United States Bowling Congress awards party held at the Kelso Theatre Pub.

Malakowsky, who works at Triangle Bowl, finished the season with a composite average of 229.3.

Nearly 100 bowlers and their families attended the event, which included the presentation of awards and scholarships, and viewing of the movie “Happy Gilmore.”

In addition, more than 50 door prizes were given away that were donated by local businesses and handmade by bowlers including Peggy Hyland and Dave Luster.

Also tabbed to the Men’s All-Star Team were Kurt Bogner (233 average), Lance Satcher (231.5), Tom White (230), Brian Yoke (229.3), Bob Malone (229.2), Beau Little (225), Matt Ramshaw (225), Ryan Fauland (224.1) and Randy Perry (223.6).

Stacy Rubin rolls away with top women’s honor

Stacy Rubin rolled a perfect 300 game, and finished with the area’s top women’s composite average to grab Women’s Bowler of the Year honors from the Cowlitz USBC.

Rubin averaged 206.1, and rolled her perfecto in the Triangle Classic. Also named to the Women’s All-Star Team were Crista Vicars (201.1), Casea Little (200.8), Val Hubbard (199.2), Sandi Lovgren (198.9), Michele Bergeson (194.6), Gina Vicars (194.4), Mary Witt (190.9), Cheri Rutherford (188.2) and Gwen Dey (186.9).

Donna Tompkins repeats as area’s top senior bowler

Donna Tompkins picked up her second straight Senior Women’s Bowler of the Year crown, and Vince Selzler was tabbed the Senior Men’s Bowler of the Year as the men’s and women’s Senior (ages 55-64) and Super Senior (65-and-older) All-Star teams were announced.

Tompkins averaged 179.4, and was joined on the Senior team by Sue Warner (184.8 average), Debe Moe (184.7), Paula Mobbs (180.8) and Joyce Dupras (169.7).

Donna Molt (171.6) led the Super Senior Women, followed by Mary Parker (167.5), Sallie Nichols (167.4), Claralee Rohwedder (165.7) and Kay Cobb (164.9).

Named to the Men’s Senior team were Carl Storms (223), Bob Nugent (218.5), Tod Berridge (214), Jim Kodama (213.9) and Jerry Roseman (206.3).

Selzler paced the Men’s Super Senior squad with a 205.9 average, and was joined on the team by Jerry Grauman (203), Norm Erickson (201), Dick Braga (200.6) and Dean Smith (196.9).

Yoke, Bogner top juniors for second straight season

Jordan Yoke continued his dominance as the Boys Bowler of the Year, and Riann Bogner made it a three-peat as the Girls Bowler of the Year.

Yoke averaged 226.4 to claim the top honor for the fourth consecutive year, and is joined on the Boys All-Star Team by Matthew Bartness (203.1), Ray Nugent (208.6), Shay Thompson (211.2), Jared McNeal (224.2) and Zack Stone (229.6).

Bogner averaged 204.5, and was accompanied on the Girls All-Star Team by Kayla Maki (165.3), Desi Whitman (174.5), Kim Gustin (176.3), Hope McGill (180.4) and Brittney Yoke (180.9).

Donte Vieira, Riann Bogner win Herold Memorial award

Junior bowlers Donte Vieira and Riann Bogner were selected as recipients of the third Joshua Herold Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

The award is named in honor of the former junior kegler, who passed away of heart failure in 2002. Herold competed in local junior leagues for 15 years before joining an adult league only seven months before his death.

Foxx awards $6,900 in junior bowling scholarships

Foxx Bowl may have closed its doors three years ago, the building demolished and Columbia Bank has risen from the rubble, but the center’s junior bowling scholarship program lives on.

Eight former Foxx junior bowlers received nearly $6,900 in scholarship funds that will be sent to the college, university or trade school of their choice.

Zack Stone received $1,404.62, Brandon Jackson was awarded $1,323.58, and Kyrah Rench was presented $1,281.33. Courtney Sanford received $1,261.82, Michael Chambers was awarded $480.12, Amanda (Cox) Jerome earned $431.83, J.J. Cox received $410.98, and Andrew Hardwick was awarded $271.37.

The Foxx Scholarship program has distributed more than $71,000 in scholarships since its inception.

Triangle presents $4,539 in kegling scholarships

Four graduating high school seniors received a combined $4,539 from the Triangle Bowl Scholarship Fund.

Since its inception four years ago, the Triangle Scholarship Fund has raised $70,000 for junior bowling scholarships.

Riann Bogner received $1,475.94, Zack Stone was presented $1,457.32, Brady Guttu earned $1,200.11, and Donte Vieira was awarded $405.76.

Bogner sweeps local association scholarships

The local bowling scholarships totalling $1,000 were presented to Riann Bogner, the only individual to submit applications for the funds.

Bogner received $500 from the Cowlitz Chapter of the United States Bowling Congress, $250 from the Cowlitz USBC Youth Association, and $250 from a grant presented to the Cowlitz USBC Youth Committee through the Weyerhaeuser Making WAVES program.

Yoke inducted into HOF

Nearly a half-century of bowling excellence as a junior and adult bowler earned Brian Yoke induction into the Cowlitz USBC Hall of Fame.

Yoke began his bowling career as a junior in 1965, and went through the junior ranks before joining adult leagues in the mid-1970s. He’s served as a junior bowling coach at Triangle Bowl for many years, and has volunteered on the Longview-Kelso Bowling Association board and the Cowlitz USBC Youth Association.

On the lanes, he has amassed a composite average of 226 during the last nine years, and has rolled 35 300 games and seven 800 series in his career.

Juniors shine at state

Triangle Bowl junior kegler Chandler Jones won his singles and doubles division to lead a contingent of area juniors who placed in the recent Washington State United States Bowling Congress Youth Championships which concluded recently at Triangle Bowl.

Jones won the F Division singles (average of 94 and lower) with 809, and teamed with Ashley Bradfield to claim the F Division doubles (combined averages of 189 and lower) with 1424.

Cody Sanford won the A Division singles (155-169 average) with 727, Erik Chamberlain grabbed fourth place with 707, and Tyler Teeters was sixth with 696. Brittany Schlauch was second in the B Division (140-154) with 748, and Halie Brackney (737) and Chance Hansen (711) finished second and 10th, respectively, in the C Division (125-139). Bradfield also finished 11th in the F Division with 688.

In doubles, Brittney Yoke and Kayla Maki placed second in the A Division (310-339 combined averages) with 1349, and Gabe Bogner and Max Leach finished fourth with 1308.

The Lumberjacks finished second in the AA Division team event (combined average of 680 or higher) with 2724; MYDB grabbed third place in the A Division (620-679 averages) with 2659; and The Extreme Team placed eighth in the F Division (379 and lower) with 2539.
