Four weeks into the college football season, and Rainier’s Chris Ware has earned NAIA Offensive National Player of the Week and Frontier Conference Player of the Week honors as quarterback at Eastern Oregon University.

Ware, a sophomore, completed 22-of-30 passes for 336 yards and five touchdowns, and ran 11 times for 76 yards and one score as the Mountaineers recently knocked off Rocky Mountain College 58-50 to earn him national and league kudos.

“Chris is one of our captains,” EOU head coach Tim Camp said on the school’s Web site. “He is getting better each and every week, in the classroom, on the campus, in the community and on the field. Chris is a fine young man. He is a very exciting player to be around. Coach (Zach) Tinker has done a terrific job of getting him ready to play daily.”

Ware is ranked second in the nation among NAIA players in total offense at 373 yards per game, his 325 passing yards per game average is fourth, and his passing efficiency of 177.1 is fifth.

Through four games, Ware has completed 86-135 passes for 1,304 yards and 15 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Wahkiakum High graduate Jeff McNally, a senior free safety at Eastern Oregon, is among the Mountaineers’ defensive leaders in tackles with 18 solo and 16 assists. He also has two interceptions, including one returned for 12 yards.

Another Wahkiakum grad, Terrance Pharr, is a senior linebacker with 13 solo and 19 tackle assists. A third former Wahkiakum player, Nathan Cress, is a junior offensive lineman, and Rainier’s Nick Byrd is a junior running back.

At Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Rainier’s Andrew Allen and Woodland’s Quincy Guy are redshirt non-participants. Allen is listed as a defensive lineman, and Guy is a defensive back.

Kelso’s Colin Kelly is a redshirt freshman offensive tackle at Oregon State University, Mike White of Toledo is a freshman linebacker at Linfield College, and Woodland’s Kenny Miller is a sophomore offensive lineman at Willamette University.

Romeo Savant of Wahkiakum High is a sophomore tight end at the University of Washington, and Castle Rock brothers Aaron Gehring and Zach Gehring are tight ends at Washington State University and Eastern Washington University, respectively. Aaron is a junior, and Zack is a freshman.

Central Washington University’s football roster includes junior defensive lineman Tyrell Nielsen of Woodland and freshman offensive lineman Scott Shelton from R.A. Long, and playing at Pacific Lutheran University are sophomore defensive back T.J. Suek from Mark Morris and sophomore defensive lineman Zach Varkevisser of Castle Rock.

At Whitworth College, Kasey Lambert of Mark Morris is a sophomore offensive lineman, and Toutle Lake’s Jeff Campbell is a freshman linebacker.

Former Castle Rock High standout Steve Amrine is now an assistant football coach at Idaho State University. A former longtime assistant at Feather River College in Quincy, Calif., Amrine now coaches safeties for the Bengals.

Ex-Mark Morris soccer standout Corey Johnson was instrumental in two recent victories for The Evergreen State College men’s soccer team in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Johnson, a sophomore, scored on a penalty kick in a 2-1 victory over Northwest University, and kicked in a goal nine minutes into the match in a 1-0 triumph over Corban College. He also netted a goal during a nonleague match with the University of British Columbia resulting in a 3-3 tie.

R.A. Long grad Baily Harris, now a freshman pitcher with the NCAA National Champion University of Washington softball team, pitched two innings in the Huskies’ victory over the UW Softball Alumni as part of the recent Husky Softball Alumni Softball Weekend festivities.

Harris started the game and struck out three of the seven batters she faced while allowing a hit.

The Huskies kicked off their abbreviated fall season with a doubleheader with Boise State at Carlon Park in Selah on Sept. 26, and will host the Husky Softball Fall Classic during Oct. 2-4 at the Husky Softball Stadium. Besides UW, teams slated to play include Lower Columbia College, Simon Fraser University of Canada, Seattle University and Bellevue College.

Over in Boise, the Boise State softball team kicked off its fall campaign with the Blue defeating the Gray 3-2 in the recent team intersquad game. Former Toutle Lake and Lower Columbia College standout Jessi Hanna, now a senior infielder at Boise State, ripped a ground-rule RBI double to left-center field in the top of the second inning for the Blue team’s first run.

In the next College Report, we’ll take a look at local volleyball, soccer, cross country and crew participants at the university level.
