The movie “Happy Gilmore” will tee off an evening of awards and prizes at the silver jubilee edition of the Cowlitz United States Bowling Congress awards party on May 20 at the Kelso Theater Pub.
The 25th annual postseason bowling event, co-sponsored by the Cowlitz USBC and Triangle Bowl, includes the presentation of men’s, women’s, junior and senior all-star teams, bowlers of the year, hall of fame inductees, senior awards and scholarship winners.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner to be served at 6. The movie begins at 6:20 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow.
Presale tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Triangle Bowl, or $20 at the door. Everyone who purchases a ticket receives two slices of pizza, salad and all-you-can-consume popcorn and pop.
Volcano Classic starts soon
The inaugural edition of the Northwest Volcano Classic kicks off the local summer bowling tournament season beginning May 18 at Triangle Bowl.
The tournament, which includes singles, doubles and team events in men’s, women’s and mixed divisions, will be held each weekend through July 26.
The prize fund includes a $1,500 payout to the top men’s and women’s teams, and $1,000 to the top mixed team. Entry forms are available at Triangle Bowl, or by calling 423-4060.
Bowl for the YMCA
A $250 gift certificate for use at any Shilo Inn is on the line at the first annual Southwest Washington Family YMCA Bowling Tournament fundraiser, which will be held at 7 p.m. on May 8 at Triangle Bowl.
The tournament is open to all YMCA members and non-members, and proceeds will benefit upcoming projects and new programs at the YMCA.
Cost is $20 per bowler or $80 for a four-person team, which includes two games per person and shoe rental. Teams are urged to wear similar attire, and can contact Pro Grafix (1005 15th Ave. in Longview) for a 10 percent discount.

17 qualify for Pepsi state
Seventeen youth bowlers from Triangle Bowl qualified for the state finals after placing in their respective divisions at the Washington State United States Bowling Congress Pepsi Championships Western Sectional tournament held at Bowlero Lanes in Tacoma.
The qualifying bowlers advance to the Washington State finals during May 16-17 at Hi-Line Lanes in Burien.
In the scratch division, Zack Stone placed third among the boys entries with 1170. Jordan Yoke was fourth with 1132, Jared McNeal grabbed sixth with 1115, and Shay Thompson placed 10th with 1091. For the girls, Hope McGill placed fourth with 1075, Riann Bogner 11th with 1017, and Brittney Yoke 14th with 1006.
In the 12-and-older handicap division, Jennifer Miller qualified 17th in the girls division with 1239, Mersadez West 27th with 1191, and Shyanne Schlauch 33rd with 1181. Among the boys, Skylar Haines was 26th with 1209, Cody Eubanks 38th with 1182, and Chance Hansen 55th with 1145.
In the Boys 11-and-younger division, Chandler Jones qualified fifth with 673, Cody Galloway seventh with 661, and Austin Brace 15th with 642. Tiffany Fletcher was the lone local qualifier in the Girls 11-younger division, placing 11th with 638.
Yoke wins OJCTA eventJordan Yoke qualified second in the Classic Division, and rolled games of 279 and 300 in match play to win the title and a $100 scholarship at the Oregon Junior Classic Tournament Association event held recently at Husted’s Hazel Dell Lanes in Vancouver.
Yoke wasn’t the only local junior lighting up the lanes at the tournament. Jared McNeal finished second in the Classic Division, and strung together games of 266-279-268 for 813 during qualifying, his first 800 series. Donte Vieira also rolled a 299 during qualifying, leaving a 10-pin on his final ball.
In the AA Division, Matt Lewis tied for fourth place with a 2091.
Surina wins OBA eventFormer Longview bowler Matt Surina beat out 60 other keglers to claim the recent Oregon Bowlers Association tournament sponsored by Larry’s Pro Shop at AMF 20th Century Lanes in Portland.
Surina, now of Everett, qualified second in the tournament at 101-over, and held the top spot into the stepladder finals where he beat Todd Sipes 184-169 in the finals for the $650 top prize.
Triangle Bowl co-owner Beau Little finished 20th, good for $160.
Rubin achieves perfection
Stacy Rubin put together 12 consecutive strikes for a 300 game as part of a 716 series during a recent outing in the Triangle Classic.
A pair of 700 series were also rolled in recent weeks, with Mary Witt carding 247-705 in the Working Girls Trios, and Casea Little with 280-704 in the Triangle Classic.
Gina Vicars rolled 268-694, and Sandi Lovgren had 266-698 and 256-670 in the Triangle Classic, and top scores from the Working Girls Trios include Vicars (234-654), Sue Warner (228-654), Debe Moe (224-650) and Crista Vicars with 225-648 and 268-643.
Other top scores include Lovgren (256-648) in the Funtimes; Crystal Fauland (257-640) and Moe (245-639) in the Happy Hour; Stacy Hampton (267-637) in the Jackpot Classic; Donna Tompkins (222-633) in Bowlers Anonymous; Adrianne Aheren (235-632) in the Sunday Swingers; Gwen Dey (246-628) in the NightHawks; and Donna DeSpain (226-621) in the Wednesday Mourners.
Trio roll perfect games
Norm Nisbet, Kevin Grimes and Jeff Schulz each rolled 300 games, and Brian Yoke and Travis Nash each cracked the 800 series barrier during recent league sessions.
Nisbet rolled his 300 as part of a 685 series in the Sportsmen league, Grimes had his perfecto in a 722 series in the Happy Hour, and Schulz put together a dozen consecutive strikes in a 753 series in the Dinner Hour.
Nash had an 812 series in the Sportsmen, and Yoke carded an 804 in the Triangle Classic. Bowlers narrowly missing perfect games include Larry Nugent with 299-782 in the Sportsmen; Ryan Fauland with 299-794 and Kurt Bogner with 299-714 in the Triangle Classic; Randy Perry with 299-775 in the Jackpot Classic; and Ricky Hefley with 298-709 in the Happy Hour.
Yoke also had a spare and finished with 11 strikes for a 290 game in the Sportsmen, and Scott Little had a 290 in the Sunday Swingers. Kevin Grimes rolled 289-781 and Ross Lavandar had 289-760 in the Happy Hour; Carl Storms carded 289-752 in the Ten Grand; Paul Belden rolled 288-769 in the Funtimes; and Lance Satcher tallied 280-782 in the Triangle Classic.
Travis Malakowsky had 278-781 and Yoke notched 279-772 in the Triangle Classic; Tony Perez scored 279-773, Bogner had 266-762 and Roy Witt rolled 269-757 in the Sportsmen; and Perry had 268-752 in the Jackpot Classic.
Stone, Yoke score well
Zack Stone added another 300 game to his bowling portfolio, Jordan Yoke carded a 290 game, and Riann Bogner rolled a pair of 700 series during recent competition in the Junior-Majors league.
Stone had 300-782, Yoke rolled 290-782, and Bogner tallied series of 288-722 and 267-742. Also in the league, Matthew Bartness rolled 256-745, Sean Flick had 247-674, Donte Vieira added 246-629, and Kayla Maki rolled 213-592.
Matt Lewis carded 223-622 in the Hi Juniors-Seniors league.
Gosselin, Smith roll 690s
Swinging Seniors league keglers Marc Gosselin carded 247-696 and Dean Smith had 255-691 to lead senior league bowling scores in recent weeks.
Smith also carded scores of 266-656 and 234-655 in recent sessions in the Hi Seniors. Other recent Swinging Seniors scores include Glen Wines (244-661), Dick Oxford (279-657), Dale Hogman (236-637), Jerry Warner (241-613), Mickey Barker (203-559), Carol Wines (208-552), Sarita Wines (199-551) and Mary Parker (198-536).
Also from the Hi Seniors were Ernie Gerald (248-643), Dale Hogman (238-608), Richard Jones (222-602), Donna Reed (213-591), Mary Parker (207-545) and Arlene Holland (192-532).
Cam Machado carded 212-568 in the Wednesday Seniors, and Grandmas league scores include Noreen VanNurden (185-594), Mary Parker (202-560) and Lois Prynne (201-537).
