Column: Serena lose her temper? You lie!

Notes on a napkin as we contemplate what was rolling through Serena Williams’ mind when she threatened to shove that (expletive) tennis ball down that (expletive) line judge’s throat at the U.S. Open …

• It began with that clown congressman yelling at the president. Liar, liar, pants on fire? Really? Has the political game come to this?

Then it spilled over to Ms. Williams’ tantrum on the tennis court, where she intimidated a woman half her size sitting in a folding chair because she disagreed with the woman’s call.

There were more F-bombs spilling out Serena than Snoop Dogg at his last concert.

And at the MTV Video Music Awards the other night, rapper Kanye West snatched the microphone out of 19-year-old country singer Taylor Swift’s hand as she was making her acceptance speech, and complained that his friend Beyonce should have won the award instead.

There can only be one explanation for all of this anger: steroids.

Then again, you never heard Barry Bonds threaten to shove a (bleeping) baseball down an umpire’s throat.

• We’re two weeks into the high school football season. What have we learned?

For starters, we’ve discovered that they still know how to play football at Kelso. The football program with the richest history in Cowlitz County is off to a 2-0 start and is favored to make it three straight Friday when Fort Vancouver visits Schroeder Field.

The Hilanders shocked Mark Morris with a touchdown and two-point conversion run by Lane Sari in the final seconds to beat Mark Morris 15-14 in their season opener, then methodically melted down Prairie last week, 20-7.

Kelso fans don’t have to be reminded that the boys in the golden helmets went 3-1 in nonleague games a year ago before losing all five of their Greater St. Helens 4A League contests.

But this is a different team — with a different attitude, a different swagger and a defense that appears to be physical, mean and surprisingly quick.

After hosting Fort, Kelso finishes nonleague with a trip to Columbia River. It’s not inconceivable that the Hilanders could take a 4-0 record into their GSHL opener at Evergreen on Oct. 1.

From there, Kelso plays three of its final four games at home — which could be a massive advantage down the stretch when teams are battling for postseason berths.

We’ve also discovered that R.A. Long is going to be a serious playoff threat in the GSHL 2A. The Lumberjacks are off to their first 2-0 start since 2003 when they went 4-0, defeating River Ridge, Todd Beamer, Hoquiam and Prairie out of the chute.

That RAL team, with senior quarterback Adam Perry at the controls, finished 6-3 but missed the playoffs.

Mark Morris rebounded from its wild loss to Kelso by cranking up its Wing-T and shoving it down Centralia’s throat in a 41-34 road victory last week.

The Monarchs will be fine. They’re still the favorite to win the GSHL 2A.

And where does Woodland fit in? The Beavers have the best quarterback in the league, two of the best receivers and a number of young weapons in reserve.

As for defending league champion Hockinson, which has stumbled to an 0-2 start? Looks like the Hawks have some problems on defense, which should be patched up before the league campaign starts in a few weeks.

What have we learned after two weeks? That the next seven weeks should be quite entertaining.

•  The Northwest Pac-10 power rankings should look like this:

4. Washington State

3. Oregon

2. Oregon State

1. Washington

Why? Because the Cougars are pathetic.

Because the Ducks — punchless on offense during the game, punchy afterward — embarrassed themselves on national television against Boise State and struggled to beat a mediocre Big Ten squad at home last week.

Because the Beavers look steady, but still haven’t played anyone.

And because the Huskies, well, are a pretty darn good football team two weeks into the season.

The loss to LSU probably said more about where UW is headed than the victory over Idaho last Saturday. The Great Yawn Era of Ty Willingham is over and it’s apparent that new head coach Steve Sarkisian has pushed the right buttons to get this program off the gurney and out of the Pac-10 morgue.

OK, so they’ll probably get beat by USC on Saturday. But don’t be shocked if it’s at least as close as the LSU game.
