EUGENE, Ore. — Teondre Williams scored a career-high 19 points and Oregon defeated Winston-Salem State 94-43 in the BTI Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.
Williams, a 6-foot-4 guard who played sparingly as a freshman last season, scored 17 of his points in the first half on 7-of-10 shooting.
Shelton Carter led Winston-Salem State with 14 points.
Garrett Sim also scored 13 for the Ducks (1-0), who trailed 7-3 five minutes into the game before ending the half on a 53-8 run to lead 56-15 at the break.
But Williams was the star of the show, hitting a 3-pointer and throwing down three first half dunks, including one on a drive from the baseline that he tomahawked over a defender.
“When he came here as a freshman, you saw somebody who wasn’t very athletic,” Oregon coach Ernie Kent said. “You talk about somebody who has completely changed his body. … I thought for someone who has been in your program for a year to have a breakout game this early; he had a superb game.”
Williams, who called it his “best game since high school,” said he wasn’t feeling 100 percent after battling an illness last week that led to two missed practices.
“I’m a little congested still, but I’m fine,” he said.
Williams and freshman guard Jamil Wilson got things started for Oregon, combining on the first 13 of what would become 27 straight points to give the Ducks a 30-7 advantage before the Rams scored again.
“We wanted to come out with a lot of energy and make’m play 94 feet,” Sim said. “I thought it was a great performance.”
Wilson, a 6-7 guard and Oregon’s top recruit this offseason, had a pair of 3-pointers during that run, and Williams added a 3-pointer as well.
Williams, whose previous single-game best was seven points, closed out the first half with two more highlight-reel dunks on consecutive possessions.
The Ducks let up only slightly after halftime. The Rams scored the first basket of the second half on a 3-pointer by Carter, but Oregon scored the next 14 points to lead 70-18 with 13:13 to play.
