Former Hockinson High School and current New Mexico State University golfer Gaston De La Torre carded a 6-under-par 65 during the final round to claim the 33rd annual Columbia Ford Open golf tournament at Mint Valley Golf Course on Sunday.
De La Torre, a sophomore at New Mexico State, carded 34-36 for 70 in Saturday’s opening round. He backed it with a 5-under 30 on the front nine Sunday and a 1-under 35 on the back nine for 65 to finish with 135.
As a college player, he helped the Aggies win their third WAC Championship in four years and advance to the 2009 NCAA Southwest Regional tournament. They finished 12th in the NCAA Tournament.
During his prep career at Hockinson, De La Torre won league and district championships as a freshman, and claimed Class 2A state championship as a sophomore, junior and senior. He was also a three-time all-region Player of the Year.
Mark Morris graduate and current University of California golfer Ian Dahl finished four strokes off the pace with 139. Dahl fired 35-36 for 71 in the first round, and backed it with 34-34 for a 3-under 68.
Another ex-MM golfer, Jason Molner, led the tournament’s opening round with 34-35 for a 2-under 69, but finished the second day with 36-35 for 71 and 140, good for third place.
Molner is entering his sophomore year at Spokane College.
Hockinson High graduate Spencer Turner finished fourth with a 36-hole total 144, while ex-MM golfer and Hillsboro’s Wade Evanson tied for fifth with identical scores of 145.
In net play, Jeff Moenck carded 133 to win the first division, followed by Tony LaFave with 138, and Eric Cheatley and Ron LaVigne of Lake Tapps, Wash., followed with scores of 144 in third.
Selah golfer Greg White edged Don Enfield 133-134 to win the second division net honors, with Battle Ground’s Anna Jenks in third with 140.
Former R.A. Long standout Chris Holway won the long drive competition, followed by Jesse Ehrlich and Brad McFadden.
