PULLMAN, Wash. — New Washington State basketball coach Ken Bone will retain current assistant Ben Johnson on his staff, and one recruit has been released from his letter of intent.

David Chadwick, a 6-foot-8 forward from North Carolina with deep ties to former coach Tony Bennett, was released from his commitment to play for WSU, the team said.

Chadwick’s father is a long-time friend of Bennett, and officiated at the wedding of Bennett and his wife Laurel.

Director of Athletics Jim Sterk said that made Chadwick’s situation unique. The other three recruits signed by Bennett for next year are still bound to the team. They are Anthony Brown of Spokane, Xavier Thames of Elk Grove, Calif., and Brock Motum of Australia.

Johnson, who came to WSU in 2004, has chosen to accept an offer to stay with the Cougars, Bone said. Assistant Ron Sanchez is moving to Virginia with Bennett. Matt Woodley is looking for work.
