R.A. Long High graduate Alyssa Wistrick has been on the collegiate fast track ever since playing her final volleyball match for the Lumberjills.
Wistrick last month signed a national letter of intent to play her final two years of college volleyball for Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., after two stellar seasons at College of Southern Idaho.
In her final year at CSI, located in Twin Falls, Idaho, Wistrick was a second-team All-American selection by the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) and first-team Region 18. In her freshman year, she was selected a first-team All-American while helping the Golden Eagles to a 10th-place finish at the national tournament.
Middle Tennessee coach Matt Peck made Wistrick his only junior college signee this spring. The 6-foot outside hitter was heavily recruited after her sophomore season came to an end.
“Our team just improved tremendously with the addition of Alyssa,” Peck told goblueraiders.com, the school’s Web site. “We are so excited to have her join our team. We have been interested in Alyssa since she was in 10th grade. We initially offered her a while back, and I am so glad we were patient and waited for her to make her decision.
“Having Alyssa will give us yet another terminator,” he added. “However, she can terminate on the outside or in the middle. She is an outstanding fit for our program.”
Last season at CSI, Wistrick played in 34 matches and averaged 2.93 kills per set with an attack percentage of .472. Defensively, she was second on the team with 90 blocks, averaging 1.03 per set.
As a freshman, Wistrick was second on the Golden Eagles in hitting percentage, third in kills per game and third in blocks per game in the region. She was the only freshman named first-team All-American by the NJCAA.
Prior to signing with CSI, Wistrick was a two-sport athlete at R.A. Long. As a senior, she led the Jills to a district championship and a sixth-place finish at state, and received first-team all-league and all-state honors.
Middle Tennessee competes in the Sun Belt Conference, with Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, University of Denver, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, University of New Orleans, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy University and Western Kentucky.
