Sept. 16 Letters to the Editor

Saving the penny

We never want to question the important work of our government. During this time of economic crisis and deficit spending, we have decided it is imperative that we redesign the penny.

This has been extremely important in preserving jobs during this critical period, so we can count this as jobs saved, right? More importantly, the penny is now counterfeit proof. Good job, guys.

One bad day

So, I admit it, I don’t know how to “twitter.” The $14 million I won on the Internet turned out to be a “hoax,” and this morning I get a “special offer” from the Scooter Store.

And you think you’re having a bad day?

Moore’s new movie

Regarding Michael Moore’s new movie (article, Sept. 7 Daily News) in which he decries capitalism, what a classic example of gross hypocrisy. Moore and the rest of his ilk in the make-believe world of Hollywood, whose heroes are Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, have made their millions under the very system that they so readily condemn and disparage.

One wonders how much money Moore would make and how much “artistic freedom” he would have in the dictatorships that are controlled by the above-named despots or in China, Burma, Saudi Arabia or any other of the countries with communist/totalitarian governments that they so admire. If Moore hates America and the system that has made it great, then he is free to leave and let the rest of us suffer with what we have, freedom.

Here is an aside to Bill Kasch: If he thinks Eisenhower would not recognize the Republican Party today, how does you think Harry Truman, John Kennedy and Henry Jackson would respond to the loons who have taken over the Democratic Party? And, yes, there are a lot of us who remember many things that Ted did in his life.

Goebbels would be impressed

In 2003, with the build up to the invasion of Iraq, 51 percent of Americans believed Saddam Hussein was directly responsible for 9/11. Where did Americans get this idea? It came from Fox News, of course.

Fox News broadcasts outright lies and misinformation. They were instrumental in stealing the election for former President George W. Bush in 2000. To this day, they broadcast lies about how President Obama is going to march the elderly and retarded children in front of death panels, aka firing squads. These aren’t even good lies. They sound like something you would hear on a playground. Joseph Goebbels would have been impressed with the efficiency of propaganda Fox News puts out.

COLA for seniors

Watching the news the other night, it was said that everyone receiving Social Security benefits will not get a cost-of-living increase for the next two years, since it stated that there was a deflation of 2/10 of 1 percent inflation this year. Give me a break, will ya. Just wait till next year when Wall Street and the oil companies do it again and drive prices through the roof and we seniors will have to start eating dog food again cause we won’t be able to afford human food.

Every time I go to the supermarket to buy food, I keep noticing that it costs me more money to buy food over a period of time. What the oil companies and Wall Street did to drive up food costs about two years ago has not come back to earth yet. We are still paying more for food, gas, heating oil and propane than we did two years ago.

The world economy is based on transportation of goods. When you start playing with the cost of oil, you are playing with everyone’s pocketbook. Oil comes down and we still pay more, since there is no price reduction when this happens.

What will Congress do before this congressional session ends? Will they give themselves another raise while we seniors have to go without?

A wonderful summer

With our fall season upon us, we can take a few precious moments to reflect on the wonderful summer months we have just enjoyed.

We started out early this spring with the Fish Frolic at the Lake, followed by the Drug Awareness Fair at St. Helens School. Then we opened our summer activities with our Annual Independence Day at the Lake — boat races were awesome along with the Fire Works and vendors. Then we had the opportunity to participate in our outstanding Concerts in the Park, along with our County Fair and Rodeo. We concluded our summer activities with our Annual Car Cruise and Downtown Live. But most of all, let’s not forget the 15-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series. Way to go, Florida. I would like to thank the Downtown Association and all the stores that made Downtown Live a huge success.

Let’s not forget the community town hall with Brian Baird. It was great to see so many people at the town hall meeting. But I wonder, why don’t we have good attendance at our local town hall meetings? We have a list of issues facing our local communities that each of us should be discussing and trying to help find positive solutions for. Do we really care about our community and the things we need to make this a better community, or do we sit at home and think that someone else will take care of the problem?
