Sorry to harsh your mellow, skaters, but the new Kelso Rotary Skate Park is getting some rules.

At Thursday’s ribbon-cutting opening of the park, the city posted a temporary banner with a set of tentative rules the Kelso City Council had discussed at its last meeting.

Tuesday, the council will formally adopt an ordinance containing the rules after allowing public comment.

Here are the rules as they stand now:

• Skate at your own risk. The city doesn’t assume responsibility for injuries.

• The use of helmets, pads and wrist guards is strongly recommended.

• No littering, glass containers, alcohol, tobacco or illegal substances.

• Modifying the skate park structures or adding obstacles is not allowed.

• No motorized vehicles.

• No spectators in the skating area.

• No skating in the parking area or around the outside of the skate park.

At its Nov. 3 meeting, the council voted to ban bicycles from the skate park, based on city staff’s research that bikes can cause damage to the structure if they get dropped during a trick. The pool coping tiles are particularly vulnerable to damage from bicycle pedals and sprockets and the steel pegs on many BMX-style bikes, the project manager for the skate park design told staff.

Another concern was that bikes and skaters travel at different speeds, which could present a safety risk. However, after listening to public testimony, the council reversed itself and removed the bike ban.

The council also decided not to prohibit skating when the concrete is wet because that would leave the park unusable for much of the year.

Tuesday, the council will set the skate park hours and possibly tweak the above rules further, Mayor David Futcher said.

The 7 p.m. meeting is at Kelso City Hall, 203 S. Pacific Ave.
