Legal residents in Lewis County can visit the Centralia College campus on Saturday for free assistance in completing applications for U.S. citizenship.
Citizenship Day, put together by the Washington New Americans program, will offer workshops for immigrants who are eligible for naturalization from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kirk Library Building.
Last year’s workshops, in four Washington cities, provided assistance to 751 people; 371 naturalization applications were completed. People attending last year’s Citizenship Days were immigrants from 84 countries.
The total number of people who became U.S. citizens in 2008, more than one million, broke all previous records, according to reports form the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The Washington New Americans program promotes successful immigrant integration by connecting Legal Permanent Residents to the information and services they need to become citizens and active members of their communities.
Citizenship Day will be staffed by volunteer immigration attorneys, paralegals, interpreters and other community members. Teams will help prepare naturalization applications and offer consultations to ensure that applications are complete.
