EUGENE, Ore. — The drunken driver who killed a five-year-old girl and his best friend in head-on crash near Creswell, Ore., in June has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports 41-year-old Stephen Jason Whitaker pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter after the June 17 crash.
Whitaker’s prison sentence came after Kailee Coontz’s father anguished account of the crash.
The Oregon State Police had concluded that Whitaker lost control of his motor home, crossed the center median and struck a car carrying Coontz and her parents.
Also killed in the crash was John Ray Ratliff, who was described as Whitaker’s best friend.
